Is it just me or has this board lost its rational use a long time ago? I dont even bother reading the general anymore, and i skim the stuff here in the odds and ends, which is all completely pointless in and of itself. What happened to this board??
you're not the only one with those thoughts and perception. i asked the same question and got shut down for it. look at the thread below.
http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22552&start=20
What do you think its rational use is?
The General Discussion is still full of GS500 questions, such as "My bike won't start" or "what jets do I use", etc.
What should it be for? What should O & E be used for? What has GStwin become that it was not before?
Post whoring for the sake of post whoreing aside, I haven't noticed a change. Kerry isn't around as much to clean people up, but other than that. :dunno:

I don't know..but if a mod is justifying "i object to" threads as non spam is the purpose of this place, then i guess that's it purpose.
i suppose some of us have a different argument as to what spam is.

I guess we get spam, ie., "Viagra" offer, "ink jet cartrige" offers, etc., it should be deleted.
If somebody has a stupid thread and I know it, then I just don't read it.
If I like a thread, I follow it until it dies.
If somebody posts something stupid on General Discussion instead of O & E, I don't get all twisted about it.
No one promised me that content on a public message board would always be germane, entertaining or relevant. It is, after all, a public message board. Take away O & E and the freedom that comes with it, and this message board is Srinath talking about carbs. Woot. To me, it is a nice diversion from work. Scan the posts, post a few, and then dig back into a file. It isn't my message board and I can't control the content. It is like watching MTV. When Laguna Beach is over and My Sweet Sixteen comes on, I turn it over to HGTV. No worries.
[/lecture]
all of the "i object to..." threads been tossed so calm down.
and it's off season now...it's normal to see more irrelevant topics. i remember the board being pretty quiet last winter
and i do kind of get tired of seeing same questions and topics in the general discussion over and over, and i'm tired of asnwer those same questions. i need to take a break.
See what happens when you disappear, Daniely? The whole world goes to h3ll....welcome back! :P ;)
Do you really answer that many questions on General Discussion?
In the spring there will be SOOOO many new members asking the same 5 questions that even Jake D will have to help with the answers. Just wait.

I want my money back!!
Oh, wait...
You want to save band width? Bomb that godforsaken "Word Association" thread into the 9th Ring of Hell.
I've noticed a difference, but you could probably ask some of the old timers and they would say it probably changes a little every year. For me personally, the biggest difference is I have the bike, whereas before I didn't. I now know how to work on the carbs, valves, electronics, etc. It changes your perspective on what you need/want from the GS. As this is a beginner bike, many people are first time riders and perhaps first time forum members. They don't understand the forum etiquette and see some of the members making ridiculous posts and want to be 'cool' and join in on the fun.
And some people are just post whores.
Eventually it will settle down, and if I remember correctly Daniely used to be quite the post whore back in the day. :thumb:
1. A lot of folks have put their GS's to bed for the winter, or are in the process of doing so.
2. Post Whoring is under consideration as a demonstration sport in the next Olympics. People are training.
3. Phaedrus did such a good job on the FAQ, people have run out of valid questions.

As an oldhead, I definitely would say that it has changed ALOT!! Never have I seen so many useless, pointless posts. I try to be helpful and courteous, without cluttering the message board, as a courtesy to all of the first time boardmembers. While it may be 'fun' to be 'cool', it's not a point to flaunt. Also, as I recall, John has made a couple of stickies asking politely to curb our posting. Again, trying to lead by example I have refrained from posting friviously and will hopefully continue to do so, so that others may enjoy the simplicity of this site that supports a simple motorcycle. Regarding the search nazis (self included), if we didn't have so much jibberish on the board, searches might go smoother for new owners looking for answers. And, I will continue to help as best as I am able; including helping John by refraining from posting as requested.

QuoteA place to relax when your done whoring your GS500.
Doesn't that involve chatting about random crap?
I guess you're saying that we shouldn't chat here because it's a GS500 forum? :dunno:
Okay. I've looked over that sentence and I've decided that the O & E is a place to relax after you're done whoring you GS.
I feel relaxed. How about you guys???
i think that the general forum looks very orderly so i think we're good

I agree with Jake D. Where is Kerry? We need a more conservative moderator like him to balance things out. :thumb:
OK OK OK ive done my share of whoring. I havent visited the board in a while since I no longer have a GS, ive been settin up the bike for the track, workin and goin to school. In cali we dont have down time, especially when you dont have a car, lol. I ride all year round, and find the concept of putting the bike to "sleep" very disturbing.
I guess mainly is i noticed the same several people making the same basic threads over and over. An I Object, or why was soa nd so's thread locked. Or other random crap. I figured the O & E would be more for other non-MC related stuff, but also more goal oriented instead of pointless whoring. maybe im just imagining things.
I wouldnt say im back, nor that i ever left persay. Just decided to post after a long while.
BTW im looking to buy a KTM or XR600 thats street legal, hit me up :).
Please note bottom line of sig.
Who started all of this PWing anyway, lets blame it on that guy
pre noobie? this IS a noobie board! and we advertise as so...
there always will be noobies...sometimes there will be more, sometimes there will be less.
as this site grows, there is going to be more voices. thus, there will be more post whores. that's just part of the growth. we should deal with the reality not try to revert back to what it was like 3 years ago.
one idea is to expand the forum so that people can post what ever they want and still not step on anyone's toes. as of now, there's only 2 forums that you can post on. the general discussion is strictly for motorcycle related stuff. that give just one forum to post everything else. no wonder people are complaining and crying. expand the forum give bored member a way to pass their time without getting criticized. after all, community is what this site is all about.
Quote from: Mr.7Who started all of this PWing anyway, lets blame it on that guy
mea culpa... actually, I don't think I can be called the original source.. although I guess I probably had a hand in escalating it.. I don't know if it's winter, or what, but this and my other forum (clubstogie.com for any cigar smokers here), have become really edgy lately, jumping all over people.. where's the Good will towards man?
I think I might be guilty of starting the post whoring in the test area with my "Read this, it's importaint!" thread.
It seemed harmless at the time :)
I agree with JetSwing; we should add more forums that organize the topics more. My suggestions:
GS500 Main- a forum for GS related stuff
Other Motorcycle - other motorcycle tidbits and related stuff
Humor - a place for all our jokes and oddities
Non-motorcycle stuff - the current O&E, I'd assume
Purchasing, Insurance, and Warranty - like the title says
Riding tips and techniques - help with general riding. Good for n00bs!
Meetings, events, rides - the get togethers
Classifieds - for sale by members
Vendors, discounts, and auctions - a place to post good deals at online stores, eBay stuff, etc...
[/list:u]
What's everyone else think?
I doubt a revamping of gstwin will happen :P
But I'd also like to see a better Introductions forum.
Or maybe categories like General GS500, Maintenance and Repair, Accessories and Modifications, Off Topic / Odds and Ends, Regionals (like our current meet and greet section just more organized) and Member Introductions.
We can dream :thumb:

sounds nice, but im assuming gstwin already cost a pretty good penny each month. doing that, although cool, would (IMO) up the costs somewhat :dunno:

Quote from: DanielyWhat happened?
Someone set up us the bomb.
Don't divide up the forums or create new ones. That's a band-aid measure. Instead, let's solve the issue at hand.
First off, it's winter. Even if the roads are clear, many people won't ride in the winter because it's cold. I don't subscribe to that idea, but many people do. Riding for most people is an outlet, and a form of entertainment - not a form of transportation. When they loose that outlet they vent their feelings, frustrations, and boredom elsewhere. It just so happens that message boards like this one are the vent they're looking for. This motorcycle board is not "all alone" in this aspect.
I've seen more than one motorcycle forum go down the shitter in the fall because there seemed to be a difference of opinion between the newer crowd and the older crowd. Well, yeah.... The crowd that had been on the boards the longest tended to ride through the winter! No real suprise there. They had ridden enough to know that it was something that they wanted to do, and a little cold weather didn't phaze them.
Second, there's a large newbie showing here. The GS is a good newb bike. Let's be civil. Remember your own "before-bike-times". You didn't know which way to hit the shifter for 1st either... If you don't want to help them, fine. But don't give them the "search" response. How long does it take to perform that search yourself and post a link to a relevant thread? There's a saying in the foodservice business: "The cup of coffee you serve a customer may be the 200th cup you've served this morning. However, it may be the customer's first."
Third, I don't mind a little humor, or OT stuff. Where I draw the line is creating threads simply for the purpose of creating threads. Same thing for posting just for the sake of posting. If you have something intelligent to add to the discussion, or have some humor you want to share, fine. If you're just going to post something irrelevant to the discussion (humor is not necessarily irrelevant), then hold it back.
Forth, this place is a message board for the GS twin motorcycles. It's a place for us to discuss our experiences, problems, etc. Let's keep that in mind while we're here. Also, let's keep in mind that this is not our house, this is John's house. As a consequence, we must abide by his rules. After all, he pays the bills. Would you start a game of soccer in your friend's livingroom? No, I didn't think so. So let's not start a game of soccer in John's.
This board is the best resource for the best motorcycle ever built. Let's keep it that way. :thumb:
My only other word of advice is very simple: "Moderation in all things"
Quote from: GeePBut don't give them the "search" response. How long does it take to perform that search yourself and post a link to a relevant thread?
I do both if I have time. But I tell them to search if I don't. Teach a (wo)man to fish...
I was a noob once, too, but I read the manual before I even got on my first bike, and I do search. It's just the best source of information, period, and it avoids both redundancy and the accessory issue of missing something important that might have been said before in the umpteenth iteration of the same information.
GeeP, don't get me started on the search thingy again :nono:
the problem is this...riding season coming to the end for many of us. so we don't have much to talk about our gs. consequently, more people are posting in odds n ends. this obviously is expected.
expanding the forum is inevitable. but i don't think these needs to be a dramatic change. for now, we can simply divide up the odds n ends into 2 sections:
Odds n Ends - motorcycle related[/list:u]
Odds n Ends - everything else[/list:u]
right now, a new post can't even stay on the first page for more than a couple of days. everything is getting pushed down. the key issue is there are so many variety of topics (and so many of them) are being posted in odds n ends, the forum becomes irreverent for a lot of people.
by dividing up the odds n ends, it will not only organize the discussion but make it more relevant for everyone.
Quote from: GeePlet's keep in mind that this is not our house, this is John's house. As a consequence, we must abide by his rules. After all, he pays the bills. Would you start a game of soccer in your friend's livingroom? No, I didn't think so. So let's not start a game of soccer in John's.
actually, it is our house. yes, john built the house (thank you john!). it wasn't for himself but for the people. without us, there would not be this house. my point is is should be running the show, making all the rules. it's a community. john can put capable people in charge and let them and the people run the site and grow it to its full potential.
