Title: 2005 GS 500 Rear Wheel
Post by: DESERT VIPER on November 27, 2005, 05:32:04 PM
Does anybody know how much a bare wheel weighs (no sprocket or disc)........also will a 150X17 tire fit?

not sure about weight but a 150/17 will fit, but isnt recommended. it slows the steering and the narrow wheel pinches the tire profile, making the last 1/4-1/2" of tire inaccessible. At the beginning its great, but as the tire wears it creates an edge at this point, and if you have ever ridden an edge you know how disconcerting this is. Particlularly in the event you are turning, leaned way over, and hit this edge then the bike feels like it "falls into" the turn. it can be scary.

if you want sticky tires, buy Pirelli Demon Sports-they're the stickiest bias ply tires you can run on these rims and work great. I recommend sticking to 130 stock or 140/17 tires.

None of the tire mfgs approve firment of a 150/60/17 tire on our 3.5" rims in this country but many are using them on the GS500s and EX500s (Ninja) with the 3.5" wheel.  Some of them approve fitment of the 150/70/17 tire and some don't.

150/70 radials approved by their mfg are Bridgestone BT020, Metzeler Z6, and Pirelli Diablo Strada.  The Strada should fit the GS500 without alterations.

150/70 bias tires approved by their mfg are Bridgestone BT45 H, Dunlop GT501, Metzeler Lasertec, and Pirelli Sport Demons. The BT45, Lasertec, and Demon should fit the GS500 without alterations.

I'm running the 150/70 Lasertec right now but only have about 2K miles on it so far.  I'll let you know next summer if I fall off the edge of it.

So far I think the Lasertecs are great for my usage.  No idea what the wheel weight is but I can still pick one up.

A katana rim shouls work if you really want the biger tire.  It is 1/4 inch wider.  The 150 tire can be used to its fullest potential without having any clearanc issues.

rear wheel weight = 12.6#
(with bearings and without rotor or cush drive)

89-96 Katana wheels and bearings are the same as the GS.
Not sure about the 97+ Kat.
