Title: Horn-y post
Post by: callmelenny on December 04, 2005, 07:10:06 PM
I failed inspection due to a broken horn :x

The old multi-meter tells me I'm get juice when I press the button, but she not honking. It looks like to me the horn is riveted together so I can't crack it open.
Anybody have this problem before?

Maybe I can buy Alphafire's horn off his crashed bike..

Juice where?

I once pulled the leads and just touched wires from the battery to the horn to test it.  I probably risked blowing something, but didn't.

Oh, just buy X5's.  It'll make him happy.   :)

Any time someone offer's a poor college student money, they're happy. Duh.

If you can get yours to work, go for it.

Just connect it straight to the battery like RG said. It will not hurt it. I have a box of them off of various bikes that I tested this way.

I'm getting juice at the leads for the horn when I depress the horn buttion. I thought for sure I had nicked a wire when I disassembled the front end last month but I guess not. I can't remember the last time I tried to use the horn, so I don't know when it crapped out.

I hooked it to a battery and it would work about 1/50 times I made the connection. I guess it needs new horn fluid. I will proably go with Amsoil.

Actually spray it heavilly with WD40 (the insides ofcourse). I know it's sealed but it's not liquid tight. That should fix it. Do the same with the contact points on the horn connectors.

Holy crap, that looks awesome. The GS horn is absolutely puny. I tried having a stab at the horn at high RPMs, and I could barely hear the thing. I doubt the person who had cut me off heard anything either, as they were also at high RPMs and talking on their cellphone, politely ignoring my lane position.

That horn might give someone a nice shock.

Look at how much a Breva horn goes for, if you're shopping.  That was absolutely the best horn I've ever had.

That is pretty cool, I think the GS horn said 105 dB on it.

I tried soaking it with WD40, still no tooting. I'll probably try a replacement.

Adjust the little screw on the back of the horn.

What does that screw do? I took it all the way out and sprayed some lube in there. I put it back in, no horn-y love . :dunno:

It adjusts the distance of the contacts. Too far away and they cannot connect to sound the horn; too close and they cannot disconnect (short to ground).

QuoteLoud enough to convince other drivers that there's a derailed freight train barrelling down on them. At 139dB it can be heard for almost 3 city blocks! YEEEOOOWWW!

There's just no polite way to say hello using this horn.

i'm in love

final post on this:

The WD40 soak plus a screw adjustment got it working again!

turning the screw really changes the sound of the horn too

Sometimes, a good screw it all it takes to get the noise back.

I agree with ROADSTERGAL . After I got a good screw I got my noise back and I have not shut up since. [Talking about my horn of course ]
