Browsing the picture files I see a number of GS500's on the track with upside down forks. Does anyone know what forks they are using for that conversion and how difficult it is? I have access to a machine shop and am only mildy retarded with respect to things mechanical. Thanks!
GSX-R 750 forks, I think. Dgyver used USD ones on his track bike, as well as Bob Brousard.
yep the gixxer ones are the ones normally used. but just about any front end can be put on with enough beer and cash.
k, thanks guys! the gix6 and 750's have identical frames so i guess i can use either. i know that with unlimted resources you can frankenbike anything together, but i was hoping that they might have at least the same headstock diameter or something that would make it a little bit easier!

Aaahhhh... beer, is there anything it can't do

dgyver's 555R used Katana forks
I'v herd of people using an RGV 250 front end, but those bikes aren;t avalable in northamerica.
question! what does "USD" stand for? us dollars? can;t be, that wouldn;t make sence
Up Side Down
As in -- female portion attached to frame, male to wheel.
oh ok, usd= up side down. I know them as 'inverted forks' but either works
Servus,
we Germans take often the Forks from the RGV 250. See here:

You also can use the the GSXR Frontend or from Kawasaki ZXR400.

Not yet.....I should have a set of USD forks tomorrow.
BobB's bike in the WoF pages has 03/04 GSXR1000 forks. He told me it was a perfect fit with no mods needed, shimming is normally required.
Wait, so we can simply slip in a set of GSX-R 1000 forks from the '03 and '04 years models simple as that? There's got to be SOME work required.

Still gonna have to do something with your dash, headlight, and clipons/handle bars
My bad.......
I left out the part of fitting the GS stem in the GSXR lower triple. That was what he was referring to fitting perfectly. Basically he just swapped stems.
ohhh! the forks are the handles...
boy, do I learn something new everyday. :o

the forks are those shock-looking things in the front that connect your front wheel to the frame. the triple trees/triple clamps are those brackets that the forks slide down through, they clamp onto the forks and are mounted to the frame by the steering stem, which is a rod that slips through a hole in the front of the frame and turns on bearings.
Clip-ons are handles that usually clamp directly onto the forks, in place of handle bars which are usually mounted to the top triple clamp. Some clipons like the ones from the 89 GS and I think the ones on Katanas also mount to the top triple clamp.
I think he was joking, Jazz... but concise information for those who didn't know!
So what is involved in getting USD forks on the GS?
Quote from: AlphaFire X5I think he was joking, Jazz...
no, i wasn't  thanks for the information
Jazzzzz.
it's hard to learn so many new terms in a short period of time (I knew no english when i came to the states on march 2000).
Hot diggity! Well congrats, Jazzz, you were quite informative then!

I have one too. Unfortunately my whole RGV is in boxes. I still can't decide what to do with it.

aww well I had to try :) not that I can really afford an rgv front end at the moment anyways
man that is one lucky rgv. DR650 motor, thats a 4 stroke right... actually stupid question, I already know the anser to that.
but the best part about stuffing a DR650 motor into an RGV250 is that you can still claim it as a 250 for insurance, meanwhile your riding around a 650.
fraud? maybe...but who really cares...?

the ins don't matter....tough with a 12 digit vin to get it registered....
all my bikes are cheap to ins....i only get basic min ins...150 yr/bike...and only ins 1 bike at a time
Here's how I mount a gsxr frontend on my bike.
First press out the steering stem from the gsxr and GS triple clamps.
The GS stem is pressed into the gsxr triple clamp.
This will require some bushing to be made so the stem is a tight fit.
On the 03/04 1000 triple all I did was weld strips oround the GS stem that fits into the triple. Then I milled it back down to a point where it fit tight.
Without any extra material on the stem I could tap it in with a hammer. But it needs to be a pressed fit. On older frontends the hole for the stem is larger so a bushing needs to be machined to fit.
The only other piece I make is a spacer/washer for the top triple clamp.
It fits into the top hole in the triple clamp. The top is larger like a washer.
The tip of the stem fits into the spacer and the bolt goes through the center.
Then you just bolt the frontend on, using the GS stem and bearings.

Mine is a 94' SP also with the dry clutch, specially imported from Japan to Chile and now the US. That's really the main reason that I haven't parted it out or sold it. Even though I could use the money, I've never seen another SP in the US and if I got rid of it I'd probably regret it for a long time. I still miss my CBR 250RR more than any of the other 10 or 12 bike I've had.
Adam, you back in the states? I thought you went to Argentina? Nice to see you around again.
