Title: Bike seems to jolt when I let off gas in 1st or 2nd
Post by: tussey on December 05, 2005, 04:31:17 PM
I'm a first time rider and been riding only a few weeks. '92 GS500e is my first bike. One of the things the bike seems to do, and I don't know if this is normal or me driving improperly but when I'm traveling around in 1st or 2nd gear and I left off the gas, say if I'm approaching a seed bump the whole bike seems to jolt forward. Is this my bike, every gs500e or how I drive? Anyone know? Thanks.

It's engine breaking, and it's normal.  Have you ever driven a manual transmission before?

It can also be a too loose chain - check the slack in the chain.  Follow the directions in the manual if you have it.  If not, do a search

My car is a manual transmission and yes I'm familiar with engine breaking. I suppose I'm pretty retarded for not realizing that. Thanks for letting me know. That's why I like this community! :)

Still, please check your chain slack and post back your results for us, please? Concerned riders want to know.

Oh really ... its busted man, sell it immediately before it starts jolting at other times ... like when you hit a bump or hit the brakes hard ... BTW I'll offer you say $100 delivered to Charlotte ... These other guys ... yea they dont know sheite ...

Couldn't a worn out cush drive do this too?

Yup ... of course, except in 48K on the 89 GS and darned near 20K on many other bikes ... I never managed to even come close to that kind of wear ... since its all tightly packaged in I dont think it wears.
Cool.

Could dry-rot though?  Who knows, just came to mind.  True that I haven't heard of many topics anywhere on people replacing them often.

I think the engine braking on the gs is quite strong. I now have a cbr600 and the engine braking feels much less.

yes, the engine on the GS slows down quite fast when you let go off the throtle, so you will feel as if you keep going forward, but the bike doesn't.

if you are gonna engine brake from...say, 7500rpm down, then you better hold on to the bike with your legs against tank.

was just correcting the spelling, it's a pet peeve of mine when people type things like "dude I laid on the breaks to slow down for this corner" etc.
