im looking to purchase one for plinking around. i want to spend around $150. i went to walmart and checked out their $99 special and it was like 30 inches long! i think it was intended for a 10 year old. i want a bolt action with available clip. so any suggestions on what to buy or where to buy it? please, im responsible so dont give me the christmas story line. i've owned countless air rifles and shot .22 rifles many times. time to buy my own..
You can get a Ruger 10/22 for just a bit less than $200 new from a dealer, or if you shop around you should be able to swing one used in good condition for half that or so. They're the top .22 out there, and there a ton of accessories for them if you want to rice them out for target shooting.

You'll shoot yur eye out
;) <-- like this
I won an open site 100yd shooting contest with a cheap Marlin 22LR. Their micro groove barrel seems to produce accurate results.
do dealers sell used ones? any thing to look for when buying used? other than it being clean?
i've seen many .22 rifles at pawn shops, usually get a good price, I have a savage semi auto tube feed that is very acurate and fun/cheap to shoot, can even get .22lr "CB" (sub sonic) ammo and shoot in the backyard , it sounds like a pellet gun with those shells.

i think this will fit your bill perfectly, Bass pro shops had em for under 200$, used one growing up and it was a great little rifle, everything breaks down and fits into the butstock so it will fit into a backpack for camping. now you can even mount a factory scope onto it.

nice! however thats pretty small. the one i handled at walmart was only 5 in shorter and it felt ridicuolusly small
never mind im a moron
whaaat?
like i said never mind. i was trying to put something funny in but i'm a moron.
on a brighter (obviously not me today) note...i'm pretty sure one of the only guns that i've shot is a .22 so I guess that makes me an expert. It was big and scary. That is all. :? Going back to my paper now that I have shown my true colors.
lol
so is the ruger 10/22 a bolt action? i'd really like a bolt action if i can.
The sound of a bolt action is divine.

I have a Remmington Model 700 7mm magnum.
Quick, buy it.
The ammo for the thing is silly expensive :x

Now that Mossberg is out of business, you only have two choices in new and recently made 22 rifles: Marlin and Savage. I would suggest a Marlin 81 TS, which weighs about 6 lbs and feels like a full-size rifle. They are basically good guns, listing for about $200 and selling for around $150.
Fred Kenna, who bought out Marlin about 25 years ago was a friend of mine. He even tried to bring back the LC Smith side by side, one of the best double shotguns made in the US, but people are no longer willing to pay for quality.
However, since I have a taste for old, well-made stuff, if you go to a gun show you could probably pick up a Winchester 67 or Remington 512 for not much more. They were made from the 20's through the 60's. I bought a 512 for $25 about 30 years ago.
My other bolt action 22s are a Cooey, which is a Canadian version of the Winchester, owned by that company an Anschutz 1518 Deluxe, which is over $1000 used and a Mossberg 144, which is a very heavy target rifle, often used in ROTC and boy scout training for competitive shooting, but not quite up to Oympic accuracy, which is where the Anschutz comes in.
Ruger 10/22 models were mentioned seveal times. They are a semi-automatic, very popular and sold at almost every discount store. Most bolt actions will be much more accurate. There is also something tactile about working the bolt on a pre-64 Winchester or a Mannlicher or an Anschutz that is like shifting gears on a good transmission. The automatic is easier, but the manual is a sensory experience.

apparetly I REALLY couldn't help it so I posted it twice! Yup I'm the village idiot alright! :bs: Just don't shoot me, mmmkay?
The Ruger 10/22 is not bolt action. I have one, actually. It is a semi-auto with a 10 shot rotary clip.
It is ultra nice!

Very true. I had a sweet one that I sold when I was a broke college student... and now deeply regret it.
ruger 10/22 isnt legal in PA for hunting. not that i want to hunt or anythign but it'd prob be easier to sell it in the future if i choose to do so.. only bolt action or single shot is legal for hunting here.
so at the local sportsman shop i found a new Marlin 925 for $155 marked down from 220. anyone used this gun? good 'bang' for my buck? decent gun? is that the right price or can i do better for one?
What are the different advantages of centershot and rimshot firearms? Which are preffered?
:dunno:
I do not think I have ever seen a 22 centerfire, all my 22's where rimfire.
Look into 223's also, good varmin round. I have Ruger mini-14 that I love.
http://world.guns.ru/assault/as37-e.htm
I was just curious really.
I also have a mini 14 and find it to be very accurate and fun to shoot. My brother-in-law recently purchased a .17 bolt action rifle. he paid about $200 at bass pro. it is exremely acurate and powerfull for the caliber but the ammo is bit expensive (whoever it does go on sale very cheap).
I've got a marlin bolt action .22lr. Looks exactly like that one but I can't remember the model number exactly. It's at my parents house, with the rest of my dads collection, actually I guess it's mine now. It's a great gun, smooth action, no binding that I've had happen with other bolt actions(Cheapos). Very accurate, I do very well with it with out a scope.
Also have a slide action tube fed remington(I think) holds about 12 .22lr lots of fun. And one of the collapsible survival .22 Blueknyt posted, but it's actually pretty inaccurate, and it just feels really cheap and plastic, but I guess that's the point of it.

Rimfire are cheap cheap cheap. The downside is that they are relatively low power... no deer hunting, etc. Also, you can't reload rimfire.
Ruger makes the 10/22 in a bolt action, its called the 10/77, but pretty much the same gun... I have one and its super accurate.
edit, maybe its the 77/22... i forgot the model number

really? the 3 differnt ones ive used in my life were all very ,very accurate and reliable. i know when the barrel wasnt screwed on tight the shots would wander abit but once i figured it out and got everything tight the grouping was wonderfull. thinking of getting one agian, but i want the one with the scope
ok guys. an update. im drunk and really wanna shoot my new gun. wait. i have no ammo. damn. ok ai ended up buyin the Marlin 925. its pretty sweet. the trigger is a lil sloppy compared to the remington i've been shooting. its still a pretty gun and seems to be bu9lt well. ok over and out
mmm, alcohal and Firearms. :?
Well I found I always drive better after a few beers, so therefore shooting should be the same.
BTW the most acurate .22's I've seen/shot are single actions.
I have a martini action .22 rifle that would be at least 60yrs old and it shoots as well as a brand new rifle.

I had a Ruger 10/22 for the longest time....I loved it to death. I had traded it like an idiot for a different weapon. I love the new toy but would like to have a 10/22 again.

i have a ruger 10/22 and i friggin love it. i can buy a brick (550 rounds) of ammo for $8 and go shoot all day and destroy bullseyes at 50 and 100 yards all day long. pop in the 25 round magazine and the rabbits wont stand a chance when we go hunting.
still havent shot it. waiting sucks. its dark by the time i get home from work :(
Dude...relax....you'll get to shoot something soon.....
alrighty. so i went to the range today. we shot cans and plastic bottles. i was 12 for 12 before i missed. this thing is super accurate! from 50 yds i shot a paper target DIRECTLY in the center of the bullseye. right on the X! i think im in love..
also i shot a ruger .44 mag revolver. oops forgot the earplugs. im still ringing. everyone else that shot it, including the owner, couldnt hit shaZam!. i shot it once and took down a gatorade bottle. i should join the marines...

Don't buy used unless you get a gunsmith to check it out, a lot of people don't take care of their guns. And watch out for that cat, holy crap even the cats have guns in the US.

Having just moved to Canada, I'm amazed by the perception that all Americans are armed to the teeth. People make references about it or ask me about it ALL the time.
I know maybe 3 people back home that have guns - two hunters and a retired FBI agent who target shoots. Now, are there idiots running around with handguns? yes. Are there other idiots with kids in the house who leave guns unlocked? absolutely. Solution? I have no idea.
I believe they actually have more guns per person in Canada than the US. We just like to murder each other with them more often.
