Title: My GS the Christmas Tree!!!!!! REAL PICS - 12-12-05
Post by: Maduro Mistress on December 06, 2005, 10:04:52 AM
In an unprecedented, jaw dropping first in "Miranda-land" my significant other last night came right out and said I can have my bike in the living room over the winter!!!!!!  :?  :?  :?

Driving home I was complaining about our lack of promised Christmas tree and somehow the option of decorating a nice, warm, snow free bike came to mind. I'm going to make my bike the Christmas tree! (He hates trees and I hate Christmas) so this is perfect!

 Cheers to a new Christmas tradition!  (I will post photos)

Yep, those needles are great to ride on...BTW, The next Doc Wong free riding clinic is this weekend and there should be lots of needles on the roads from the trees and all the people driving back from the tree farms.

me. if not the holiday itself , i abolutely deplore the hype. what a pain in the butt.  otherwise normal radio stations play terrible christmas music for a month.  stores are packed full of people buying useless crap for each other that they all return later anyway.

I get excited about christmas for two days - christmas eve, and christmas day. Those two days I spend with friends and family that I don't otherwise get to see and talk to, eat alot, drink a little, and enjoy the smells and sounds of Christmas.  Dec 26 comes and I'm over it.  :dunno:

I don't hate Christmas...but I do hate Christmas time.  As far as I'm concerned, the entire period between Thanksgiving and New Years Eve should just be elimiated.

Christmas time is the period where nothing gets done, it's impossible to live life normally, you get innudated with forced "cheer", and you suddenly have the responsibility of checking in with every family member you haven't seen or spoken to for the rest of the year.

Christmas time is when everyone is out on forced vacation (due to 'use it or lose it' policies) and those that are left are too busy finalizing next year's budgets to accomplish anything else.  It is the least productive time of the year.  Of course, if you go on vacation you can't actually do anything because of the hoards of other people also taking the time off...it's impossible to travel anywhere and everytihing is booked solid.

Christmas time is full of people who are offended by the nativity scene, menorah, or other symbol on the city hall grounds (or lack thereof).  Others get all bent out of shape when people refer to something as a "Holiday Tree (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=domesticNews&storyid=2005-11-25T225326Z_01_KRA582362_RTRUKOC_0_US-LIFE-TREE.xml&rpc=22)" rather than a "Christmas Tree".  And the rash of complaints about people going overboard on their holiday decorations starts.  The sanctity of the Season of Retail Euphoria apparently has enough power to offend everyone.

Christmas time is when you are forced to find that "perfect gift" for someone that you haven't spoken to since last Christmas.  It's also the time when you have to wring up a sincere-looking smile and say, "Oooh...just what I needed...socks" or "I'm sure an extra large will fit...I like my clothes baggy and dumpy looking" or (the only one with any shred of real truth) "You shouldn't have!"

It's when the only entertainment available is watching The Wizard of Oz, Miracle on 34th Street, and Charlie Brown's Christmas for the umpteen-millionth time (because you can't actually go out anywhere due to the crowds), or listening to Bing Crosby and David Bowie fight it out in their version of "crooner's deathmatch" becuase the radio stations switch to 24-hour Christmas overload.

The holidays are when I need to visit the various subdivisions of my wife's family for Chanu...Hanu...Channu...that Jewish holiday with the candles that lasts a week, and spend "The Eternal Day" at my parent's house for Christmas where they still (after 10 years) don't understand that my wife doesn't eat ham.  It's the time of year when I put on 10 pounds from all the unbearable festivity...owing mostly to the fact that the only way to suffer through it is to do so half-sh&tted on spiked egg nog.

Hmmm...maybe I'm just bitter.  :dunno:

Merry Christmas.  Happy Channukkah.  Whatever.

Since I started this, I will formally title this:

Why I don't like Christmas.

For starters, I agree with Badger, it's a very over commercialized, overzealous "season" where everyone is "supposed" to be happy.

For me, it is a time of year that I have not seen my family in almost a decade (because I live overseas from them), I have no family of my own (because I'm going thru a divorce) and when I did have a "family" all the ex and I did was fight about when the Christmas tree was going up and he would never come with me to buy one, let alone decorate it, so I started a ritual of buying one and decorating it myself.

Apart from THAT aspect, Chistmas eve was the last time I talked to my mother before she was killed 9 years ago, and also when my last cat died - 2 years ago today, actually (Yes, i know the threads about cats right now are rampant) and I just can't deal with all the happy people when I am remembering people I'll never see again, and half the reason for the holidays is to be around your family, of which I am without and when I did have one I still didn't feel like I belonged. THe best memories I have are putting up the tree with my mother when I was a kid - that's one of only 2 things I remember about Christmas growing up - so that's why the whole tree thing was a big deal to begin with.

So therefore, having my bike in the house will make it my tradition on my terms, which is a damn site better than any Christmas I've had in the last 10 years, and it may even help heal some of the angst I have towards the festive season.

Maduro
I think that starting your own tradition is a great idea. Sorry to hear that you have negative memories associated with XMass.

I understand where you are comming from, as I have several friends who live in WAshington that are from Hawaii. One of them hasn't been home for XMass in 3 years.

You are right that the holidays are supposed to be a time for family, but family does not always have to come in the form of people you are related to. So I would rephrase your comment to say that the holidays are a time to be around the people who matter most. If you feel like there aren't any people left that you are close too, then I'm sorry to hear that too. However I can think of a certain online discussion board that is feeling pretty insulted right now.

I know that GSTwin.com can't replace family, but I do feel that all of the people here are friendly (some way to friendly) and genuinely care about one another's well being on and off their bikes. So I guess I'm just saying that's a start... and for what it's worth I hope you have a wonderful Christmass.
P.S. I'm sure I chat with people on this site way more often then I do a majority of my family.

dude, I just chill out, avoid Michigan avenue, and drink.  That's not so bad, is it?

People will get offended from absolutely anything, so their complaints are meritless whining, which I ignore.  And gifts?  Just give em socks, and don't worry about it.  If you get socks, say thanks, and wear them.  Everybody needs socks now and again, and the funny ones with little santas on them make good icebreakers at that party next July.

It's a lot easier to take if you don't attempt to keep up with the joneses.  If they get offended that you didn't send a card (and you care), just send it in January.

where's the bike-tree pics?

don't worry about it.  People get insulted by their own preconceptions, and teh internet just gives 'em an abstract land where their preconceptions bubble up to the surface.  Now have some mistletoe!

well I'm not going to start it up before I bring it inside, so I wouldn't think that would be a problem - right now I've been running her about 10 minutes every other weekend in the garage - my biggest problem is going to be finding a big enough tree skirt - HAHAHA

If you have room mates they have dirty socks. How can it smell worse than dirty socks?  :P
