Post by: mike24 on December 11, 2005, 06:09:54 AM
hey guys!

1. what should be the idle RPM for a warm engine?

2. should i check the oil level on a warm or a cold engine, and is it really important if i use the center stand or ask some1 to hold it?

thanks.

I think idle (when warm) should be about 1000 or 1100 RPM's - about there.

I usually check the oil after the bike is warm but has been sitting for a bit - that way the oil has a chance to work it's way down from the top of the motor.

It's best to have the bike level to get an accurate reading.

check the oil level with the bike on the center stand

1. 1,100-1,200rpm as per the manual http://www.gstwin.com/every4000miles.htm

2. Check the oil after a ride, on a level surface and it's easier to check if you're by yourself on the centerstand. Always check once a week, as a good habit. I wait an hour for the motor to cool off enough to be able to touch the dipstick, even with a sock or rag.

I believe the manual says to check the oil on the center stand after it has been warmed up and then tuned it off for 5 min.

The idle on just about every engine I've ever owned (Honda, Suzuki, Toyota, plymoth, etc) is roughly 1000 rpm.

The best time to check oil on anything is when the engine is cold, on level ground. This way all the oil is completely drained into the crancase, it's not hot to touch, and then you can add oil if needed before driving off.
