Can you take off the front fender and put it back on without removing the wheel?
It has allen bolts on the top and nuts on the bottom that are almost impossible to reach. I managed to do it, somehow. But it was really a half-assed operation (involving duct tape).
Is there a "right" way to actualy get the fender off?

The short answer is no. All the manuals list wheel removal as a preliminary task. Do you own any of the service manuals for the GS?

My "Fender Nut Plate" modification makes removal of the fender a cinch. It is not very expensive, but requires a small amount of time, some basic fabricating skills, and a trip to a hardware/supply store if you don't have material to donate to the cause.

HERE. The nut plate was made from some scrap aluminum.
To do this you will need
metric taps and drills.
While you are at it, get an extra mouting plate, or two, and use longer plate mount screws. Stack them up for a stiffer front end. The stock plate really adds no mechcanical support and only mounts the fender.
Its less frustrating and easier to just remove the wheel first.
