As a mostly lurker, I just wanted to thank the admins and everyone else here for all the great info to be found on this site. It really helped my hunt for my first bike. The GS500 was at the top of my list of candidates, and last weekend I found a great deal on a '91 model in great condition. It had a couple of minor electrical bugs that I've already fixed, and it has a few scrapes, dings, and rust spots, but the engine and transmission are in great shape!
I've put about 50 miles on her so far, mostly just in my subdivision, and I'm having a blast! :thumb:

Yeah, it was like that when I bought it. He mentioned that he'd replaced all the fuel hoses and didn't put the new hoses in exactly the same. I need to take the tank off and see exactly how its set up. I'd like to return it to standard, because it currently doesn't have a reserve.

That bike has gone through 3 list lurkers ... I found it in charlotte a couple years ago for my at that time non GS owning friend who later became Srileo :lol: ... He had just lost an air Maxim to a house fire, and the bike was owned by someone who was on the old list and had bought stuff from me off that list (brace and some others - shock or pipe I forget ) I know it has a Yosh pipe off like a GSXR but not sure what I sold him. Then the bike gets a quick once over (sealed side ways battery and some others) and I run to atlanta and drop it off. Then last summer carbs get rejetted, some fuel hoses etc whatever, he did that, as well as a tank coat job I think. He was incessantly complaining about something or other, then we spotted its ripped diaphragm, swapped it out and it was back to running like a top. Then this summer I went there again and sorted out some stuff, and did like a brake rotor swap or some like that ... and we checked the valves and what not. He said he was trying to sell it, but right after he put it up for sale he crashed his miata (yea what sorta dude drives a miata anyway :o ) ... so I told him to ride the bike and wait and fix the car. Yea loooong 4-5 year story ... from a trailer park in NC to what is now admiral crunch's suburbian heaven. It had some cool features whihc srileo nixed. It had my shortie bars on it, one of 3/16th wall super super short and agressive. The dash is still painted black isn't it ... and the bike itself had been painted, the frame had a good new paint job, whihc is why it looks that bright. The body seems to have not held up that well, with some million micro scratches ... some of whihc was due to srileo's tank bag ... The exhaust is rusty as the pic shows ... So someone better start showing TLC to it or else ...

Nice bike but I think it could do with some decals and the exhaust needs some high temp paint to stop it rusting.
Yeah, I plan to take the exhaust off and get rid of the rust and repaint it. I've just done mechanical stuff so far. I noticed a few bolts and screws were missing, so I replaced them, the headlight wasn't burning, and the front brake wasn't activating the brake light. Now that that's all taken care of, I'll start on the cosmetic stuff. I knew the plastic had been repainted, but I didn't realize the dash wasn't normally black. I also didn't know it had been rejetted. If the fuel economy is reduced significantly, I may return it to stock jets. I'm glad he put a standard handlebar back on it. I might not have bought it if I had had to lean forward any further. I was looking for a bike as close to stock as possible. I noticed the aftermarket pipe, but that wasn't a big deal. I figured if it was obnoxiously loud, I could get a factory pipe, but it doesn't seem bad. I'm not sure what the difference is from stock, though.

Yea you cant revert it back to stock that easy ... apart from pipe it also has jets and I believe a slide hole blocked off ... I did tons of work on its slide, basically the first bike I put a new diaphragm on ... anyway its gas mileage should be around 45 ... BTW that petcock has a diaphragm too, and that was where I suspected the problem now that I remember. He sent it to me with his carbs and I totally didn't think of popping it open ... Yea recently he posted and PM'ed me about not getting the thing to light up the headlight. I as usual ignored it ... :lol:

There is atleast 10 that will be better, not just from a riding point of view but also from a wrenching point of view.
The best IMHO is a 87-90 XV 535 virago. Its followed closely by a 500 vulcan and a savage 650 (very cruiserish I know but they are infact easier to ride and wrench on as well as near impossible to wad) ... then come the standards. 450 nighthawks - cm and cb hondas, maxim 400's etc. Then come older standards, KZ 400's and 440 etc. Of these I have owned 535's and savages, and currently have a KZ440. For a advanced beginner I'd recomend a 650 or a 550 nighthawk. Hydraulic valves and shaft drive, literally gas and oil only unless stuff breaks ... :guns:
