Title: best way to do a quick launch?
Post by: facio57 on January 03, 2006, 05:22:14 PM
hi everybody, i was just wondering what everyone thought is the best way to get a quick launch off a stop.  seems if i rev it too much and let the clutch out slowly, it bogs down for a little while at the beginning.  should i rev less/let the clutch out faster?

well the biggest way to a great start is practice practice practice practice practice.  Every clutch and bike is different so we're not going to be able to tell you too much.

Been so long since I've paid attention to my starts...when I'm looking to really boogy on my Ninja I think I just blip the throttle bit, pop the clutch and try and twist the throttle off.  With such low power bikes you've got a pretty cushy margin for error.

Start like you are in a 125cc moto.  Big elbows, ahead up on the tank, R's at about 7grand, clutch off the grip and let out to just before the friction zone.  When the light turns, go full throttle and feed in as much clutch as you can - as quickly as you can without too big of a wheelie.  If you do it right, the front suspension will be at full extension with the front wheel just light on the ground and the RPM's will be between 7 and 9K.  I like the front wheel to come off the ground a little bit but that adds a few thousandths to your 60ft time.

I've experimented with my weight on the seat and also by being light on the bike and letting the it scoop me up.  Being off the seat and letting the bike scoop me up seems to be a bit quicker on the launch but it's more likely to wheelie.  I think that 1 or 2" of roll before the bike feels your weight gains you some 60ft.  This *should* work even better with a shallow stage but I haven't tried that yet.

Is it just me or is The Tree really sacred ground?

That moment after you and the other racer stage, before the lights go - Man.....it's just life how it was meant to be lived.
