Ok heres the story... I have a gs500e 1998 6k
I moved from Tucson, Arizona to Orlando Florida. The bike ran great out in AZ, (kinda had a flat spot in 3rd but no big deal) now I have a K&N air filter with it jetting out, Im not sure what too but nothing insane, with a stock exhaust.
No in FL when I full throttle in 4th going at highway speeds (70is mph), when I get on to the turnpike, on key when I go under this bridge (I know the bridge has nothing to do with it) the bike begins to back fire slightly then more and more then starts to buck as if its running out of gas. Then it will stall, if you try to start it right away it wont start at all, but if you sit an wait 20mins. it fires right up.
I took it to a local dealership, hope from one service advisor to another they wouldnt try to F me over. They tell me "To get my bike back on the road" I would need to spend $526.08. The tech said that its bad for me to have the K&N air filter and it jetted with a stock exhaust, on the bike. Now if thats true my bike ran great in AZ, and now its having that problem. They also told me it needed a Top clean.
I realize from a cars point of view if you change one thing (fuel, air ect.) then youll have to change other things (exhaust, timing ect)
So here are my questions:
Does it make that big of a problem having a K&N air filter, jetted and have a stock exhaust, cause it ran nice in AZ.
Also does any one know a good shop in the Kissimmee, Orlando area?
I was told to check the fuel filter and just have it rejetted to this alt. Any info would be much appreciated!!!
Thanks
about the only thing that could have changed from AZ to here is humidity and altitude. Your problem sounds fishy though.. Maybe you could always just buy a more free flowing exhaust? Check your plugs and see what they have to say.. You can try checking out power motorsports..
if the bike ran great in AZ then its not likely to be the problem in FL. is it possible that its just coincidence the bike isnt running great now? check the fuel filter. might be the gas you're getting in FL too...
You also might try running some carb cleaner through the gas too. It could just be a little dirty or something. Just don't put the entire car sized bottle in you bike's tank.
Thanks Pablo, im going to check the fuel filter when I get the bike back. As for the fuel I only use moble 93 octane. Thanks for the advise.

Just a small piece of advice. Save the money and run the cheap stuff. There's no performance gain to be found in running 93 octane vs. 87 octane. It's been beaten to death here, but I thought I'd save you a dollar or so every fillup.
Sorry I can't help but what do you mean by saying it had a flat spot in 3rd. This makes no sense to me?
NiceGuysFinishLast-- thanks for the info, I was just told that today, from someone else, saying that they have found it runs better with lower octane.
ukchickenlover--while acclerating in third it at a 3k rpm the bike doesnt have power and wont acclerate. its not because i just need to shift theres a spot where it just cuts out of power. If i would down shift into 3rd and its 3.5k then its fine.
you also may be bogging down the engine. in my opinion you shouldn't be accelerating at 3k try to keep your RPMs higher like 5-9k.

my pleasure!

I agree with this. At 3k you don't have much power, the bike likes to rev.
actually now that i think about it i shift around 6-7k i was thinking more of the position on my car on the rpm gauge, but ya when i shift is 6-7k on my bike.
Yea your tank vent is fooked up ... Shipping, transporting etc does that ... some crap gets in to the cap and adios ... OR yank off your carbs and send to me ... and tell me what setup ... I'll check it, jet it and synch etc ... for $40 and shipping ... OH no, 400 and shipping ... yea that's it ... cheaper than the dealer ... whoo hooo ... seriously $40 + shipping ...
Cool.
Srinath.
might need a washer under the needle to clear up midrange alittle, it helped with mine. Srinaths the man with carbs though.
I think srinath is right on. When I read your post initially it reminded me of a problem I had with my yamaha radian after I coated the tank. When I coated the tank I clogged up a vent, and the gas tank could no longer breathe, so the bike would literally run out of gas, actually the carbs would. I'd try and try to crank with and without choke, to no avail. After sitting awhile the floats would slowly refill with gas, and I could run the bike again until the floats would run out of gas. If anything trying to clean the tank vents costs nothing and can only help you, try that. Considering you changed nothing, it has to be something you picked up on the way to FL. Altitude and humidity wouldn't make that much of a differenc, ( I just did a NC to NV move myself without any changes to jetting etc) so it has to be something that happened whilst moving. Hope this helps
Patrick
Srinath PM sent.
Hope you get sorted . I find if you shift between 5000 and 9000 rpm the gearbox shifts nicely.
