We're back! I figured out how to restore the whole forum. 5 days of torture. I can finally shower and shave!!!
Needless to say this sucked, but I'm glad it's back up and running.
John, would you care to inform the users what actually happened?
I am curious myself about the cause of this whole messy mess. Was it the terrorists? (darn I want to beat that little girl from 'War of the Worlds' when she says that line)
(i tought this thread was locked. darn it. confusing little icons)
Converting databases to correspond to different forum software is a major pain in the ass. Looks like everything worked though.
some smilies are not there anymore... and I don't mean the images themselves, but the bbcode of some smilies appears 'raw' since is not present in this forum. minor things.
Who turned out the lights? It's all black in here. *grin*
Thanks for bringing it back online! Never done forum databases but I have no doubt it was a total pain in the ass. What happened anyhow?
Now go get some sleep!
What happened?
We got locked out by our old host for server usage. I had to beg to get access to the site. They were kind of dicks about things till I found a new host as they were worried I'd open the forum back up.
So I couldn't download a backup through phpbb. I did download a backup through cpanel. This restored most of the site, but the mysql databases wouldn't restore.
I then f%$ked around with ways of exporting the sql databases, then individual tables, then different formats... till I was finally able to get the whole thing working again. This seems like it should be easy but it was a major Buddha Loves You.
3 days with no shower and staring at this monitor trying to learn how to work with mysql as fast as possible. I've had no sleep to speak of and it shows. I'm tired, dirty, and ready for a good night's rest.
I'll get the old emoticons back. I might need some help remembering what the text was for them. If you remember what the text of an emoticon was like :eatme: or whatever it would help.
May I ask why this software was chosen over the phpBB software?
What happened to all of todays new posts
Hackers. Too many DoS attempts & other stuff. This should be better. :)
I think this is excellent, good work John. It is very much appreciated.
Like Pandy and some others, I sent in a lil donation too. Hopefully others will follow and you can re-coop some of the expenses =)
Thanks for the effort John. Very much appreciated!
Great work John ... Thanks for bringing it back ... was afraid I had to start doing some real work there ... Oh wait a sec ... I am jobless ... OK ... I was begining to wonder if I should be looking for a job ...
Cool.
Srinath.

Some people are never happy
hey John, you may want to remove the 'Designed by' at the bottom of the pages (on the template), since that site does not exist anymore :icon_mrgreen:
btw, don't we get like templates to choose? (at leat another one less darker for daytime or something?) :icon_rolleyes:
No I am just lazy!!!
Whew, with the board back I finally have something to do.
For a second I thought I would have to go riding or something.
Thank you for all your hard work, John. We really appreciate.
...our bosses, on the other hand.... :icon_mrgreen:
Oh great. The board is back up right as my hard drive crashes... I guess I'll just have to take over my friend's computer as I'm doing now to use the board. Ah well.

Yeah, I really resented the work I had to do at work after the forum came back up.... Maybe we can get our bosses to donate if we promise NOT to PW for 6 out of our 8 work hours? :icon_mrgreen:
Speaking of donations....
http://www.gstwin.com/gstwin_donation.htm
Yes, I'm on a mission here folks. I can't go through withdrawals again.... Please...make your donation now....save a purple pansy from the horrors of GSTwin withdrawals.....
Thanks for the hard work!
I generally hate computers and related issues. Things that are supposed to be simple to do never are. Case in point: spending 4 hours trying to get a wireless router working - it is still not working! I'll have to 'bring in' a techie - I've wasted enought of my time.
Again - many thanks!
Dandy
I hope this forum will be more stable. Seen the horror of the hackers on another board (yeah I whore around)
Is htere a spel checker wiht this new forum? :icon_mrgreen:
No spell checker. Sorry
Good Good... Very Good
-Anti 8)
Congratulations and Great appreciation to you all involved in that process! :thumb:

Too bad, but doubt that those who can't spell would ever realize they need to use it anyway.
I can understand and forgive mistakes when English is not your first language, but failure to spell, use punctuation, capitalizing and proper grammar make it harder to read and is just plain annoying.
No matter. John, I also appreciate all your hard work and returning this valuable GS500 resource back to the world. I was having flashback withdrawal moments (I'm a BeginnerBikes.com refugee).
John, I have a question. Any chance we can show the member's home location under the Avatar like the old days?
Kinda miss it -- seeing where all the folks were from.
Agreed. How can I help someone if I can't understand them, or be able to read their post or question.
im glad that the forum is back ........but im lost.....i cant recognize new topics compared from before...wherein...it (the new topics) are in a different (recognizable) color...any help? :icon_confused:
The new topics have a big honkin' NEW button next to their titles. That seems to do it for me right now.

+1 I kinda miss that location thing too
Yes, it would be nice for people to help other's near them; set up group rides, local carburetion issues, gear suggestions and availability for the same area, local shop suggestions.
Is that is not possible, could John or an Admin create a "regionals" (or something similar) main category? I know there is the Meet n' Greet, but it's kind of rough.

everything seems to be "new" even in page 3-6...before the titles that i havent browsed at is in a different color....
John,
Thanks so much for all the effort. I wasn't even aware that there'd been a meltdown (winter in NY puts my GS browsing into hibernation). Then I clicked on a topic-reply notification and was instantly confused. Grey? ahh, a few clicks later and I was up to speed. Thanks again for all your hard work.
Regards
Riz

Wow! What a surprise when I first saw the new format. It'll take a while to get used to.
Finally we have a search function that can find pertinent titles only. That's great.
Thanks John

Excellent !!! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/redshift/Ride.gif)
That was a nice feature... I didn't have to look at member profiles to find out where they were from. :thumb:
