Title: Have you ever been offered $ more than you asked for in a job?
Post by: john on January 12, 2006, 02:37:50 PM
OK I got my offer sheet.  They ofered me more than the salary range we discussed.  Not a lot more, but more none the less.

I spoke to the IT manager and he said that they wanted to make sure I would be happy and stay as the time they spend training me was something they wanted to ensure wasn't wasted.

This seems all to good to be true.  I have one final interview with the board of directors and after that I will be told their decision.  I was ensured this was a formality, but they always get approval from the board before hiring people.  The president has already met me and is recommending me to the board.  IT is considered upper management so all hiring decisions are made by committee.

This is gonna be nerve racking despite assurances that the board has never gone against the President's recommendation and the job is mine.  I'm nervous as f%$k :o

That's awsome!

I've never gotten more than I asked for, but I've gotten less, which is nice, but not AS nice.

Now don't go out and buy a bunch of stoopid stuff and get a bunch of debt racked up just because your newly rich.  We call these the "golden handcuffs", which are not as cool at fuzzy pink hand cuffs.

It's never happened to me, but I've heard of it happening...  It's good news really.  They know that once you've been there a while you'll start hearing how much other people make and getting pissed off 'cause you're make less...

That's my situation...  I was a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY underpaid contractor and they wanted to convert me to full time.  They offered me the same amount as I was making as a contractor, but I'd be salary and couldn't pull OT to make up the difference.

I actually laughed at the offer and asked for $12,000 more.

They told me that "usually people take a pay cut when coming from contracting."  I laughed again and told them that a pay cut of my salary would be less money that anyone has ever been paid to do my job and that I'd rather have my contract expire than work for that amount.

I got $2k less than I asked for...  Which, at the time, was what I wanted.  A few months later I heard how much other people were making...    :o  The next lowest paid guy was making $7k more than me.  Without even bitching about it, my boss came to me and told me I was getting a raise...  I got a 10.5% raise...   :thumb:  And I'm still the lowest paid...  (But as you can tell, I don't work all that hard   )

I have! Once. For the same reasons. And then all of our dot.com customers became dot.bombers and we lost our revenue, and I lost my job.

But stil, congradulations, John!l

A lot of companies will hire you at a specific salary or wage, but will up that to make it net pay.

I routinely get raises here without any idea they're coming.  My boss will just come up and say hey you get another $100 from now on.  My check reads close to +$145, though.

They were not lying.  Contractors usually get paid more than salaried employees, since they havde to pay for their own benefits.  Of course, it's not excuse to give crappy offers to underpaid contractors.

Except that I was getting paid less than the lowest paid person salary or hourly...

I was getting Tech Support wages in Test...  That ain't right.

I took the job at that wage 'cause I had been unenjoyed for over a year and was totally out of money...  So, any wage was looking good at the time.  A year later, I never bitched, worked my ass off, and never got a raise...  But, they wanted me to convert to full time. :thumb:

So would this be an exempt or non-exempt position?

My observations have been that exempt positions usually get more up front....and in the rear  in the long run.

It totally depends on the culture of the organtization.

I wish you the best!

thats awesome John. One of the offices where I worked, for 8+ years, kept giving me raises and perks without my making any references to my salary. THAT was nice. They also sponsored my bicycle racing so it was a free $1000 frame every year and repairs to my wheels when I'd crash. Pretty sweet. Now I have my wife looking over my books-frankly I'm lucky I see the track at all....

Good for you! O0
