Hi Solarpulse,

My wife and I are in Dartmouth, NS. She just bought a 2005 GS500F just like you. And I do mean "just" bought it...this morning in fact. She is so new to riding she hasn't done it yet. She will take the MSF in the Spring and then we are good to go...slowly at first. She would  probably love to hear from another woman who has the bike.

Been here in Midland Michigan so long, I'm almost an American.  But I still can't get away without sounding Canadian, Eh?

A Tim Horton's opened up in-town, so I'm only five minutes away from one.  It's a snowball's throw away from a Dunkin' Donuts shop -- talk about competition.  Heard that there's some 250 Tim's in the U.S., and over 24,000 in Canada.  Wendy's is considering spinning it off -- sounds like a great way to buy Canadian.  :thumb:

Solarpulse,

We bought it at Procycle. I bought my bike (FJR 1300) from Freedom Cycle in Halifax. In both cases the bikes I wanted were only available at the dealer I bought them from. We haven't picked up the GS as we need to find a place to put it. I have a shed that I put my bike in and I use to work on it. With my bike in there, a motorcycle lift, and my tools there really isn't room for the GS. Likely put it in my sister's garage but that will mean cleaning it out first.

My wife is both nervous and excited. I remember what it was like to take the MSF course and be so excited. I bought my first bike before taking the course too. A Kawasaki KZ 750. I still remember the feeling of riding that for the first time after the much smaller bikes in the course.

Tim's are slow to penetrate into the US -- Pharmacies have already taken all the good spots.  I mean it -- here in Michigan, Rite-Aid, Wallgreens, and other drug stores are as plentiful as donut shops back in Canada.  Strange how cultures are close but not quite the same, eh?  :)

HI ALL from SURLY BRUCE from FREDERICTON N. B.  Was home in NOVA SCOTIA last summer [05] abnd had a great ride on the 05 F .Got kicked out of RALPHS PLACE  [peeler bar] got loaded at the SPLIT CROW what a great time. Left DARTMOUTH and took scenic route along the EASTERN SHORE until I hit SHEET HABOUR then I cut overland and on to TRURO. I was quite impressed with the bike as I rode in all types of riding conditions  bad weather/ bad roads and had no problems at all [ except the time I ran out of fuel while the petcock was on reserve ]

Ralphs!??! ARGH. That place is a dive. It's alright I guess if you don't mind waiting 3 hours to see T&A. Not to mention I'm not really into that scene.

I expect to see a sh#tload of GS's this Sept right? :D

Yea RALPHS is a dive but it is within staggering distance from the house . I got the boot because I was more entertaining than the crack whores swinging around the brass pole. [when they actually danced] Humour like " Did you notice that 3 [ladies] have slid their JUNEBUG up and down the pole and nobody wiped it off between dances "  BLECH ! I was the center of attention and man was the peeler pissed !

I'm more or less at the same latitude as Toronto, and I start to ride as soon as the roads are clear of the possibility of snow, ice and salt.  Earliest I've been out is March 12th, but generally I'm out by the first day of spring.

With this kooky weather these days, it's hard to predict.  But for me to get out for long trips at decent (80 kph+) speeds, it'll have to be over 8°C.  (Spring is only 38 days away. :thumb:)

Hey Simba, a fellow Kingstonian. Actually I just moved into Kingston about two weeks ago for a job. I actually have a few questions for you if you ever read this tread again. I'm a newb but I'm thinking about buying a GS500

1. Which is the better local bike place, the one on bath or the one on dalton.

2. There any local bike clubs or something like that?

If you have any other local tidbits it would be appreciated

Hey nabob1982

Just a few months ago Tonys cycle (the on bath) changed ownership. The old owners were annoying and i really dident like them but the new guyes are great. there still learning the computer systems but there not to bad.

They had (last time i checked) a 2004 gs500f a tad pricey but good shape

Their web site is http://www.tonyscycle.com/

Motorsport plus (the place on dalton) is really just a H-D dealer they have some Hondas I found the workers to be   kinda stuck up.
But there open sundays but if you really need something there open.

Tonys cycle used to have a weekly ride but i am unsure what is going on with that Atm.

There is the kingston riders group that ride regullarly www.kingstonriders.org

For jsut general kingston stuff http://www.kingstoncomputerplanet.com/forum/index.php
This is a computer based forum that i run but in  the off topic section there are lots of good local disscutions
Aslo the buy and sell always has good non computer related stuff.

Btw where did you get a job?

Yeah tony's cycle is pretty cool, talked to one of the owners about that used GS... He said he's very willing to go down, I'm thinking of buying it anyhow. Know any good insurance places around here by any chance?

I'm working at wolseley mechanical (on harvey street) as a Graduate Trainee, basically I work there for a year and a half and then I get a job higher up in the company.

There are not alot of insurance places around here but  ther is 2 state fram places, a co-op and gradsman (the one i use)

The gs seem like a good deal if he was willing to go down on the price. there is also mcbride cycle in toronto if you will to travil.

my gs500f is sitting in mcbride's warehouse...
they don't really cut any deals, its a downtown store, if you don't buy it they figure there's probably 10 other people who will for the price their asking so they don't really care very much if you're walking out of there without a bike.

I'm trying to plan a trip down to Cape Breton for September, but so far I can't get anyone to say they'll go for sure. I've got a few buddies that are kind of like "yeh, sure, maybe" but I'm trying to nail down a solid plan. Are you riding with a group? Or just going solo? Hopefully I'll see you there. :thumb:

budget speed demon,

Exactly where you are as far as people confirmed for the tip. My friend is going up pending the purchase of a more reliable bike but if that doesn't happen it won't break anything.

I'm going up solo if I can't find someone to depart with and I have no problems meeting other bikers (In fact would prefer that). For (Eastern) Americans, the landing spot in Nova Scotia (Via ferry From Maine) would be Yarmouth so whether I want to or not I'll probably find a group to ride with. :)  I just hope they understand that I'll be taking the long scenic route vs. straight highway.

Good luck and PM me if you end up going!

no one will say for sure that the'll go with me. so I don't know yet. I don't really wanna do the trip solo so if I can't find anyone to ride with then I prolly won't end up going. where do you live?

It's understandable, you're looking at roughly 30 hr combined drive too... I live in Yarmouth NS which makes it an 8 hr. solid highway drive to Sydney via South Shore. The earliest I could meet other Canadians coming from the East would be a bit past Truro if I take the North Shore route to Sydney. Which is about mid-trip.

Budget speed demon, you still riding now? I had my bike out today around "North" Toronto. I'd be interested in a Cape Breton trip in September, tho I'm at school- some friends have a summer place at the tip of the island. Any details like how long itd take?
Title: Re: Any Canadians??
Post by: budget speed demon on February 23, 2006, 07:07:48 PM
I'm currently not riding. my bike's in storage in someone else's garage and I don't want to bother them by constantly taking it out and putting it back in. If the nice weather keeps up I'll probably get it back out late March/early April. Although if I can get all my money and parts together, it might stay off the streets for a little longer to do the big bore I'm planning.
As for Cape Breton, map quest says about 21 hrs. So I guess that's 4-5 days travel time. I'm probably gonna have to take about 2 weeks off. (4 days to get there-4 days of the festival of speed-and 5 days to get back) I think it'd be a lot of fun. It'd be great to have another GS rider to go up there with.

Yes, I'm taking the course at St. Laurence College. I booked myself for the course in the first week of May.

I'm probably going to pay for the rest of the bike in late March/Early April because I want to practice with the bike in a elementary school parking lot accross the street (on weekends of course).

I hope this weather keeps up.

Yeah it would be cool if all the nearby people could hook up for a ride, no matter what they ride ;). I know my home town of Sudbury has the most Tim Hortons per capita I think it has about 1 Timmies for every 8 to 9000 people, it absolutley insane. THers about 160 000 people in the gretare sudbury area, you do the math.

There's lots of rain this week - hopefully it will wash all of the garbage off of the road so when it warms up the roads will be nice and clean.

Weather looks ok for saturday then its going to snow (aparently) later on in the week. Better get your riding in this saturday!

yep - Canadian too!
But in Edmonton where there is now a lot of snow .
A month ago I was out riding in beautiful 10 degree weather on February 5th. Never thought that would ever happen! The weather has been really weird this winter - heck, they're even now getting tornados in the southern U.S. - what the heck is going on? :dunno_white:
A good idea: go to timmie's for a butter caramel and just ponder things. (they're good!)

the one in january is a bigger show, if i recall correctly admission is cheaper than the national show, and the parking is free.

the national show is probably 1/4 surplus misc. motorcycle cruiser parts 1/4 used motorcycles 1/4 retail and 1/4 motorcycle clubs and other organizations.. it was packed... think standing pit @ a concert packed... and i went pretty early in the day too.

the international show in january was much less crowded be becuase its not the 'beginning to motorcycle season show' and the deals are better (at least that's what i saw) this show definately had more motorcycle apparel retailers, compared to the more motorcycle parts retail focus of the national show.

then.. theres the other show, i think it was in november? maybe december? maybe even as far back as october where they had all of the manufacturers at the convention center downtown. that show was alright, i prefer it to the old international show where they used to have the new bikes... cleaner, less shady feeling, no one is selling anything, it was nice.

How's everyone doing with insurance this season?

I was reading on some forums today (gtamotorcycle) that the GS500 is now blacklisted with kingsway insurance as well as a bunch of other starter 'sport bikes'     :cookoo: :cookoo:

hopefully i don't have to part with my GS at the end of this season due to insurance  :dunno_white:

Are you serious? That sounds totally ridiculous. Whenever someone says I ride a sport bike or crotch rocket, I have to argue with them and point out that until 2004 the bike was naked. My insurance runs out in June and there's really only the one option for me in my area besides Primmum which I've heard are quite good... But they aren't local.

Yeah, Tim Hortons are no good. We've got 4 or so serving our town of 8000 .. CaFfInE AdDiCtS.

Helllooooo from Winnipeg... I'm originally from Dalhousie, NB, but I've been all over in the past few years. Lived 2 years in Moncton, NB. Then a year and a half in Oshawa, ON (the dirty shwa!) and now I'm in the Peg.

Insurance out here isn't god awful... the locals complain about it, cause they don't know any better... I'm happy I only have to pay 850$ for the year on my GS500... cause I know how much worse it could be.

Public insurance has SOME perks... I guess this is one of em.... :dunno_white:

I'm no where near being a Tim's addict... I don't drink coffee, but I do like the odd hot chocolate and timmy's is my favorite.

I will tell you one thing though... this city (winnipeg) has a serious lack of Tim Hortons compared to most eastern Canadian cities. Probably one of the few cities that Robin's Doughnuts hasn't been annihilated! Moncton is probably the city with the most tim's per capita that I've ever seen!

lots of maritimers here - was just in Halifax and Dartmouth a few weeks ago and didn't see one GS (likely a little early though).

been living in London Ontario for a while now, originally from Cambridge - well, originally, originally, from somewhere much further away, but Southern Ontario is what I know.

i'm on a black, naked GS with dual headlights - if any of you from around these parts happen to cross paths,  honk, flash, wave, whatever and i'll do the same!

I'm in the Falls, and I just bought a 93 gs500e.  She only has 6600 klicks, and should be good to go in a a week or so.  I still have to get my licence, lol.  Maybe I'll meet some of you down the road.  Mike Mike, it's possible we've allready met at the bike show if you stopped by the Ontario Pocket Bike Racing League booth.  And, Yes, I'm addicted to Timmy's.  They must put something in it.

I am going to be looking for some parts later on, and I'm hoping to find some of them with the help of some of you.  To start, I'm thinking I am going to want to try the bars off the F model.  I might be looking for race fairings as well.  If anyone can help with this, please contact me.

Thanks

joedude - steve_r18 and I are both from the city of London, Ontario.  He mentions his location earlier in this thread on page 6 on May 01, 2006, 8:03:19 AM, in between your posts.  I mention my location a few responses up this page @  May 09, 2006, 04:08:18 PM.  My reference to north and east are specific to the city of London (which is very common here; and about as specific I'd like to get).

So either you are familiar with the city and curious particularly where in it I was referring to, or you missed all of that and are under the impression that I was referring to country in general.  Sounds like the later (but could be wrong) - if so, a little attention to detail could help avoid some confusion :)  how did you say it?  'just messin with ya1' :P  it's all good man, really!

If you're ever down in these parts from MB, look Steve_r18 and I up and we'd go for a ride.

Ya I am a little familiar with your area... I flew around London a bit during the past few years while I was based in Oshawa, and I drove around town a little too... Sorry if i came off as snarky, I was just teasing... north could be Barrie, and east could be Kingston for all I know  :dunno_white:

Either way, have fun riding around your area... I loved driving around the Niagra area, beautiful scenery... I know it's not exactly where you're at, but its not too too far!

If ever you're in or around the 'Peg... get in touch!

joedude - I'm still confused by your interpretation of what you think I meant.  It really sounds like you didn't read any of the dialogue that steve_r18 and I were having, specifically addressing each other.

I'll recap and break it down even more.

me: "been living in London Ontario for a while now..."

steve_r18: "I was thinking...what end of town are you from?..."

me: "live in the north, work in the east..."

then you come in with:

"hmmm... live in the north, and work in the east eh? could you be a little less clear?"

I try to clear things up, but you still come with:

"north could be Barrie, and east could be Kingston for all I know"

really does sound like you just read "live in the north, work in the east..." and nothing else.  what am I missing here?

let's digress, back to "Any Canadians?? "... sorry everyone.

Just trying to figure out which part of the city, that's all... Since I've been around the area....

Near the University... Near the airport/GM plant... that's what I was looking for... buuutttt... forget about it... its really lost its appeal at this point.

It's way to hard to simulate sarcasm on forums...
Quotenorth could be Barrie, and east could be Kingston for all I know
Quotelive in the north, work in the east
Barrie isn't exactly a suburb of London... and Kingston is a bit of a commute just to work... isn't it?   :icon_rolleyes:
