I looked at a '96 GS500 today, and a couple times it would stay at a high idle (3-4k rpm) after I let off the throttle. Searching the forum, it seems like this is definitely not an uncommon problem. From what I gathered, the solution can range from adjusting the idle screw to a fair bit of work on the carbs. If I end up buying the bike, is this a serious issue that will make me regret my decision later? Other than that, the bike is a pretty good deal, so I wouldn't mind putting in a little time/effort/money to fix it.
Also, quasi-related, the guy didn't have the owners manual. Are they available online or easy to obtain?

I bought my users manual from the dealer for only about $12-$15, but I have an '04, and I think this manual is for the '05. No big deal.
I've seen lots of manuals on EBAY for hte older models.
My bike sis this too, it would hang around 4000 RPM. I just lowered the idle a bit, but it will no longer idle on its own, i have to have my hand on the throttle at stop lights. There has to be a better solution.
the throttle cable might be too tightly pulled and so you are inadvertently on the throttle even when you "feel" like its completely closed. you will have to take off the tank and look at the carbs to be sure. the owner's manual is nice, but i swear by my haynes manual and u can find those pretty easily.
