I decided to ride my GS until it got very low on gas to see how far my range was. I kept tabs on the gas level as I got low, figuring I'd stop and fill up once it got too low for comfort. Well, it started sputtering and cutting out on me while there was at least a quart left in the tank. Luckily, I was almost home when it started. Does the GS stop pulling fuel before the tank runs dry? Is this normal? (I didn't forget to switch to reserve.)
What year is your GS?
How many miles did you get before it stopped running?
And, yes... There will be some gas left in the tank... But, if there's a LOT left, you may have some fuel-hose routing issues..........
Mine's a 96 - and when it was all stock I'd get about 110-120 maybe before I hit reserve. You'd open it open and you could see plenty of gas, but that was always where I hit and it usually took a little under 3 gallons to fill up from there.

How fast were you going, and for how long, when it died? Could it have been the evil Fuel Starvation Monster? Riding at 85+ MPH for a few minutes will make mine stall. Not that I would ever go that fast. :icon_rolleyes:
The most I'd ever pull on my GS was about 130, so I don't think your range is too far off. And I would always have about 2 gallons left in the tank, I never bothered to figure out why, it wasn't an issue as I never rode more than 30 miles or so at a time.
It's a '91 model. When I filled up last, I left the bike on the sidestand and filled it almost all the way to the cap. I got 140 miles before it started sputtering. I believe it has been rejetted.
The last owner replaced all the fuel lines with new ones, but he did a "simplified" hook-up. Not quite sure what he did, but I have no reserve fuction, and the bike only works in "prime". It's all or nothing. I am eventually going to redo the hoses back to stock, but it works for now. I assume there's just no "on" fuel line or vaccuum line.
I don't think I can have fuel starvation in prime, can I? Of course, I don't really know if it's really prime or not. I need to look at what he did with the fuel lines. I was traveling at 45-55 for about 5 minutes, then turned off into my subdivision. It started to die a moment after I entered the subdivison.
i get just over 300 km too a tank...only ran out of fuel once and that was on my way to work so i just slowly pulled over and put it on reserve and off i went
oh no wait now that i think about it i ran out twice once was like a week after i got it so i had no idea how far i could actually go on it lol and when it happened it totally freaked me out!
It's the design of the tank. What might look like a quart is probably 100ml and due to the tank bends/design it won't slurp every ounce.

Mine would get to about 120 or 130 (he was a '92). I never figured it out either; I just filled up every 100 miles. :dunno_white:
wow .. i feel like my bike just rocks :) .. on my way to work ( probly .. 14 -20 miles few stop and goes) i get about .. 180 to a tank if i get on the highway and do some good riding i get about 214+ :) and this is before i hit the back up supply
My '01 gets about 180 before reserve... But, the tank is bigger. :thumb:
I went from Ottawa to Montrea and back on one tank, thats a little over 400km's! I went into reserve in the last 5 km's.
Mostly highway driving but I still think thats amazing!

That can help explain part of the problem of tanks with limited fuel range. If you've never drained and flushed your tank, it is overdue. Next time it runs low and you're close to home, drain it, flush it with some fresh gas, then fill it. You might want to install an inline fuel-filter while you're at it, if you don't already have one. Don't forget to strain the gas you flushed the tank with through a screen, or you'll just be putting that crud back into your tank. Anything you can flush out of the tank now is stuff that won't come back to haunt you later. You'll be amazed at what comes out of the crap pockets...
I have a 96 and I get to about 150 miles then I hit the reserve. I don't sputter or anything I just get nervous and don't want to take the chance on killing the engine. I should check my tank out and run it till it dies all the way then check to see how far I get. I do highway and stop and go traffic.
I plan on installing a fuel filter soon.....
