Title: WHEN was your first drop compared to when you started riding?
Post by: annguyen1981 on January 25, 2006, 08:45:50 PM
I've been riding since last September, and I haven't dropped her yet.

I was wondering WHEN you guys dropped your bikes?  First day? Second day?  Week After?

I have had my bike for almost a year now with 4500 miles on it and have yet to drop it.

Yes, yes, and yes?    I dropped my po' lil GS a LOT.  Fortunately, he was already very much a beginner bike, so the levers just got a little curlier, and the bike just got a little added character each time. O0

I think I managed to keep my SVS up for the whole first month?  8)

First day, before my first ride. Dropped the '92 a couple times after that. Dropped the '04 the first day, too.

Going up on the centerstand. On the '04 I didn't anticipate the extra weight of the F model.

So basically you didn't drop while in motion.  I would imagine that there's less damage that way.

I dropped it numerous times while in motion. On my second ride on the '92, still on the first day, I lowsided because I hit a combination of diesel fuel and sand in a corner. A dumptruck had overturned there a few days earlier and it hadn't been cleaned all the way. I also dumped it in a parking lot a week later because it wsa covered in leaves and sticks and water and my rear wheel locked and lowsided again. Then a few weeks after that I mangled the fucker up hard.

Then I bought the '04. Crashed that last month. Lowsided at 50 or so mph in turn 10 at TWS.

Now you see why I can safely call myself Sir-Crash-A-Lot?

damn alpha that's a lot of investment in gear...what do you wear that is keeping you so safe that you keep getting back up?

On the '92 I went down with a Fieldsheer Mach 1 armored mesh jacket, Olympia Digital Protector gloves (BAD BAD gloves), and a Shoei Z-II helmet. Didn't walk away from that one immediately because I smacked my head on a curb.
On the '04 I went down in full Teknic leathers. Sport pants, Lightning jacket, Carbon gloves, and Sidi boots. Got up and walked away from that one right then.

I LOOOOOVE my gear. The Fieldsheer mesh jackets are great, especially for warm weather. Great ventilation, and CE armor is standard. I put the CE armor from the Mach 1 jacket into my Teknic leather jacket. Fit perfectly. I won't wear a jacket if it doesn't have CE armor in it.

I think all in all I've only trashed $300 in gear.

The first time I rode a dirt bike I hit a basketball goal and still have a scar to prove it.

The scar is on my left shin... there was a big hole in it and we filled it with super glue...... um they were teaching me to ride on the street where my ex and I lived..... it was her niece's dirtbike

Pastrami has seen the scar.

I fell once during my MSF class.  Locked up the front brake during emergency stop drills.  The bars jerked to the left, and I went flying to the right.   :o  Bruise on my thigh from landing on my keys and some scuffs on one boot and one glove.  The gear did its job.   :thumb:

Bought my GS and accidently let it tip over in the garage once after about 40 miles and two days.  I was trying to put it onto the centerstand while sitting on it, and that wasn't working, so I decided to get up and do it.  I tried to hold the bike upright while I dismounted, and it went to the right.     Laid her down easy and had no damage.  Glad I'd read the proper technique for picking it back up.

In england we do a cbt which is a 1 day training couse to let you ride a 125cc bike on the rode.
I did my cbt in winter and it was raining. We were doing emergency stops in a car park and I locked the front wheel and crashed sliding down the tarmack. This is were my love of motorcycles began. :icon_mrgreen:

Mine was about a month or so after I started riding...  Not that I hadn't tried before then.

I was riding 2-up...  Bad idea...

1st day...Going around the cul-de-sac slowly and went down between a car and a mailbox (82 honda).  I was lucky enough to have my neighbors out to enjoy the whole thing.  Second time, about 6 months in, I stalled doing a "California Stop", was out of balance and kind of placed it on the ground (05 GSF).

That's not my experience.  First drop was a few weeks after I got it...it fell away from me when I was putting it up on the centerstand.  It fell over onto a rounded curb and rashed the plastic a bit (only cosmetic) on the right side.

The second time was a tight turn in the driveway...the front wheel slipped off the pavement (down about an inch onto grass) and then hesistated when coming back up, causing it to fall into the turn and sending me tumbling.  This time it fell on the left side, and for the life of me I can't find any evidence that anything happened.

I think the amount of damage that any given drop causes is governed by the motorcycle gods.  I think it has something to do with how many people witness the event and how embarrassing it is.  No one was around to see my first drop, so it had to leave embarassing evidence; my second drop happened when traffic was backed up in front of my house, so a lot of people were watching...I guess the motorcycle gods thought that was enough and didn't feel the need to leave some damage as a reminder.

I dropped mine the 1st week i had it trying to roll it into my storage shed in the backyard.

I was pushing it up a fairly steep hill and as i was concentrating on getting the bike up the hill i totally forgot about balancing it and it fell over on the grass..wiped her down no scratches i was lucky!

I see a lot of people have trbls with the bike getting it up on the centre stand...What works best for me is sitting on the bike and holding onto a pole or some kind of support such as a beam to keep the bike balanced...Ive done this several times in my shed and garage and havent dropped it once!

I can't remember when, 'twas so long ago, it was probably the first day (then again, you put a 120lbs kid on a 487lbs bike, you can figure what's going to happen).

Two weeks into riding.  I overcorrected in an underpowered turn, and hit a curb.  Bent forks and rashed quarter fairing...but it's all better now.

I got my bike this past Sunday. It got dropped on Monday. :(

I took it out to a parking lot with a couple of friends who had taken the MSF course with me. One of my friends was doing a u-turn and dropped it going about 2 mph. Luckily it wasn't a full drop, so there wasn't a scratch on it save for the bent clutch lever. Unfortunately the clutch lever is curled beyond recognition.

No drops so far.  I've been riding for 6 months.   One of the managers that works here did back into it and knock it ove last weekr, but it was next to a hedge and some dirt so there is only a bit of scratching on the motor case.  (I also had to replace some rivets in the slip on can)

Whats ridiculous is that the guy who backed into it rides an expensive-ass BMW K1200LT (http://bike-exchange.com/BMW%20K1200LT%20LIB.jpg)....  i'm waitng for the day he brings his in so that I can tip it over  :icon_twisted:

HAHAHAHAHAHA

pure EVIL!!!

I've had a few bikes, I dropped the wild-blue-Honda, the GS poredecessor twice with innapropriate parking (surfaces) with no visible damage and I dropped my '03 GS500 on the day I bought it the same way but took most of the drop with my left leg and spared any damage, I also dropped it once cleaning it on my forecourt and scratched the "Suzuki" emblem on the right side.
Live and learn!
