Title: Wiring harness race modification help needed
Post by: dgyver on January 29, 2006, 08:45:50 PM
I am in the process of stripping a 90's era wire harness for track use. I have not taken one apart this far before. But since I completely rebuilding the bike and the harness is off the bike, I figured why not. Plus I am going to add additional grounding wires from the battery to the coils. Anyway, pretty much everything is straight forward of what street stuff to remove. The part I am a little confused with is the sidestand and neutral light circuit with the diode.

If I remove the Diode, Sidestand Relay and Sidestand Switch, does the Blue wire from the neutral switch connect to the Blue/Black of the Neutral Warning Light? But then there is the Orange/Blue wire from the Engine Stop Switch that goes to the Sidestand Relay. Or does the Sidestand Relay need to stay?

Dang I hate electrical.  :icon_confused:

On my track bike the  sidestand switch and relay are gone, and I wired my nuetral light straight from the switch to the idiot light, but what wire goes where, I clouldn't tell you.  There is not much of the wiring harness left on my bike.  If you get stuck, I will go out to the garage and investigate further.

Knowing that does help a lot. Not being an electrical person, I do not fully understand the diode/relay relationship. I did not want to hack it up if it is required.

What is the purpose of modifying the wiring harness on a race bike?

Simplicity and weight savings.
I took 2 lbs of wire off my bike (not counting any switches.)

I run total loss (no flywheel/ charging system)
The power goes from the battery to an on/off switch to the coils. That's it ;)
With Dyna coils, I use about .25 volts for a 20 minute race.
Still I make sure the battery stays topped off.

Thanks Bob. Did not realize it was that much.

This bike will have a charging system. It will just be a track toy. The next motor will not have a charging system but may have a starter, have not got that far yet.
