Title: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: manofthefield on January 30, 2006, 07:43:18 PM
Graduated college in December and moved to MN with my GF who got a job before me.  More specifically we are in Savage, ~15min south of the cities.  Now I'm lookin for a job, hopefully it won't take too long.

I know there's a bunch of people around here, I just never paid attention to exactly where.  Is there anyone close to me?  Anyone going to the Cycleworld show this weekend?

Anyone been riding in the past week with the nice weather?  I would have, but my bike is still at my parents' in WI til I go back for it.  I'm hoping for an early spring :icon_mrgreen:

Yeah...I really never check this end the board this time of year.

I totally spaced on the cycle show....I sat around all last saterday...and was like man I was going to do something today but could not remember why I had nothing planned. I didn't even realize it till like wednesday

But yeah...welcome to the cities, I usually don't take out the bike till all the salt and sand is gone. There are like 3 other board memebers in the TwinCities, Rema1000, and some others I cant think of right now.

First Thursday of the month goto Dulono's Pizza in Uptown it is bike night and it gets packed...like 4-5 blocks of solid packed bikes...usually we try to get the members to make a GS showing.

Anyways welcome to the cities...hit me with a PM if you want to ride when it gets warm

What degree did you graduate with??

Aaron

The cycle show was pretty good for me, but I'd never been to one before.  I could see it getting old after a going for every year.

I try not to ride before the salt and sand are gone, but usually I get impatient.

I would definately be up for a ride sometime.  I remember you guys talking about Duluno's here and there in the past, sounds like a good time.

I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree, still working on finding a job

I drive through the Twin Cities area once in a while. Haven't made it to Dulono's yet, but I keep trying. I used to date a girl near Savage (Chaska). It was cool. Anyways, PM me too if you want to ride. Welcome and good luck with your job hunt.

Thanks Ry. I almost went to Dulonos this month, but it was raining pretty good.  I'll have to hit you guys up for a ride one of these days.

Hey all, I'm a noob to the forum here so just wanted to say hi. Only been riding since last summer, but I'm totally addicted! My bike has some side stand issues at the moment that I need to get resolved, but I think it would be fun to go for a ride sometime and meet some people.

Welcome t dubs

Hope you can get your sidestand issues resolved.  If you need any advice, ask away in the general discussion, or do a search for old posts about similar issues.

Thanks! Yeah, I actually did find a post that someone was having the same problem, so hopefully I can get that figured out.

Anyone interested in going to the Buell demo in Welch village this weekend? (info) (http://www.stpaulhd.com/)  I was thinking about maybe going saturday to check it out and ride someone elses bikes.  Looks like it might rain though...

I was there, now I'm in canada. If I'm back with my bike sometime I'll try and set something up.

Coll0412 knows of a sweet road just across the river in WI...  Just make sure you notice the gravel in the U-turn with the guardrail.  That, and the tar snakes, will make your butthole pucker.

Later folks.
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: manofthefield on April 29, 2006, 05:56:32 PM
Well, too much rain and cold and too far away for that demo ride.

Note to self: watch out for gravel in WI... I was actually over there a few weeks ago and had some encounters with a tar snakes; I puckered at least once

On another note, does anyone around here have the tools for adjusting valves?  Or at least a good source for valve shims?  I'm not very familiar with the dealers around here yet...

I'm debating whether I should get on the list for one of the valve adjusting kits or just doing it with basic tools again
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: coll0412 on May 10, 2006, 09:54:47 AM
I need to start checking this more often,

as far as a good place to get shims I am not sure, try PM'ing Rema1000 he might know

If you get the valve adjust kit let me know, maybe we could do it togther(in a totally straight way)(http://www.mnsportbikeriders.com/forum/html/emoticons/post-6-1092133541.gif)

otherwise I was thinking about buying the tool, its only 20 bucks, you are more than welcome to use it if I buy one

Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: manofthefield on May 10, 2006, 08:15:20 PM
I was thinking the same thing... either get the kit or maybe just buy the tool (or try it without the tool again).  I'll probably be a month or two before I could get the kit, but maybe I'll just do it
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: coll0412 on May 10, 2006, 09:16:13 PM
Yeah let me know, here is the link to the tool I was thinking about ordering

http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/product/valve_shim_tools/

I am sure there is someone local who carries the shims, otherwise I guess just order them

(EDIT)- In fact I just looked and Hitching Post Motorsports and MotoPrimo are Motion Pro "tool centers" so they might even stock it in house

Cool
Aaron

My cheapness/poorness got the better of me and I put my name on the East coast list, but like I said it will probably take 2 months to get here.

If you want to do it sooner than that, you can order the tool and I can take my name off the list, but either way we should get together and do it...

Sounds like a plan, do you have a garage or nice drivey, all i have is the walk way to my house

I do have feeler gauges, and all the sockets and crap to do it, I do need a caliper too so maybe I should just wait...arggg

The problem is that I am 2000 miles overdue, and I know my exhuast are loose because they were at the loose end when I checked them last time and keep getting looser.

I will keep ya posted.

Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: manofthefield on May 11, 2006, 07:57:14 PM
I'm probably about 1000 miles overdue too, I'd have to check

I've got half a garage at my townhome, so that should work.  I don't have a calipers, but I wouldn't mind picking one up.

btw, thanks for the link, that's the same service my school used for jobs
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota

So I just ordered some 40 pilots and 127.5 mains and plan on doing the install not this coming weeked but the following weekend.
Have you rejetted yours, because this will be a first for me, anyways that means that I will probably be looking to do the valves in early June, I am not sure the East Coast Kit will be here by then so I might just order the tool(its only 20 bucks).

Let me know what you want to do

Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: manofthefield on May 18, 2006, 08:01:34 AM
Actually, I've got some jets waiting for installation too.  I've had 'em for a month or two, but I just haven't set aside the time to do it.  So you're planning on installing yours Memorial day weekend?  I might be interested in joining you.  My girlfriend and I have some company visiting the next couple weekends, but I may be able get away then since it's not my company that weekend.  I'll have to talk to her and see whats up.

If you get a valve tool and want to do that stuff in early June we should be able to set something up.  As of right now saturdays and thursdays are best for me, the other days I'm usually working in the morning.  One of these days I'll get some kind of a real job though
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: coll0412 on May 19, 2006, 04:46:44 PM
yeah  if  memorial weekend is may 27 and 28(i dont have a calander that says what event days are)

Otherwise I want to do the valve adjustment soon cuz it running pretty rough right now, so ealy June would be nice, still gotta find some where with shims.

Later,
Aaron
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: Ry_Guy on May 22, 2006, 11:06:39 PM
Just thought I'd chime in here...I'm planning on doing a valve adjustment as well. The valve adjustment kit is helpful, but won't contain all the right shims you'll need. I got a little crazy with ordering shims, so now I have 4 of each size ranging from 2.50mm to 2.65. I have a valve tool, but no feeler guages. I've also rejetted my carbs already, so if anyone wants help let me know. I won't be around Memorial Day weekend, cause I'll be out riding  8) But maybe some time this summer we could have a valve-adjustment party!

Oh, and I ordered my shims from http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/
Cheepest I could find at $5 a pop. If you order, I'd suggest ordering the shims alone. Otherwise they tape them to a box or another order, and sometimes UPS will have an mysterious accident where all the contents fall out of the box, then UPS picks it all up (minus the shims), and stuff it back in the box like nothing ever happened. Then you'll call up crc2 and they'll be pissed with UPS and ship another set of shims seperately via priority mail. Sometimes it happens, is all I'm saying....But I'm happy with their products. I've put in 2.60's and they work fine.
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: coll0412 on May 24, 2006, 05:03:44 PM
Yeah I can get the rest of the stuff(feeler gauges and caliper) , I was hoping to do it within like 2 weeks, becaue I know my valves are tight now I  am way overdue. But at ManoftheField put his name on the East Coast Kit so who knows when that will come. Ohh well, let me know when you are free Ry and we will do it up.

Rejet=Done(kinda  turns out that it has a DJ kit in so that sucks so its done for now)

Vavles= Need to do Soon

Ry_Guy could it at all possible that I borrow your valve tool and buy any spare shims you have. I dont know if you need them all or what but if you want to sellt that would be cool

Manofthefield- You still up to do this, if you are let me know when a good time would be to do it. If you want to do a rejet at the same time I still have to finish the rest of mine when I get the new needles in.

let me know

Anyone going to Dulono's on Thurs (tommorow)? I believe it's the first Thursday of the month, and I can finally make it this time.

coll0412 -  Yea we can work something out with shims. I'd like to do my valves first though before I sell any shims. I'm free Thurs, & Sat morning this week if you want to do valves. If you bring the feeler guages and caliper, I can bring the valve tool and shims. I also have a garage to work in, so if you wanna come to my place you're welcome. Doesn't matter to me, just lemme know when you can do it.
I plan on cleaning out the carbs too, so if Manofthefield wants to join in...maybe saturday morning would work?

Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: manofthefield on May 31, 2006, 07:54:47 PM
I may be able to do saturday morning, as long as I'm not gone all day...  So how early would you guys want to get together?  (My garage is still available too)

I can buy a caliper and feeler gauges if needed... I wouldn't mind having either/both in my toolbox

I probably won't make it to Dulono's tomorrow... I need to schedule that farther ahead next month

I could be in Savage around 10:30 am, unless you want to meet me out here at 10. It's about a 50 min drive either way. I have to work at 3 on Sat, so I can't be gone too long either. I think Aaron's in the middle of us. Aaron, where to? Not to put you in the spotlight or anything....but I did   :icon_mrgreen:

Wow I have been working non stop and have not looked at the board in awhile

I feel left out now....anyways...you guys are planning at 10:30AM, I am supposed to watch my neice so I might not be able to do that.

But I will call my brother tomarrow to see if I can reschudle to watch her later in the day.

I will check the board tomarrow and let you guys know.....

Dude, you should just work less. It's much easier on your constitution  O0
Hope you can reschedule! That was me who called you today, btw. Just was wondering if you made it to Dulonos. I was there but didn't see anyone. Saw a couple 500F's though, a faired yellow and a naked black one. Good times.
Manofthefield - PM me with directions. I'll probably come in from 169 depending on where in Savage you live.

So I reschudled and can meet you guys at 10:30AM if thats cool with you guys. What do I need to bring, I have feeler gauges( will have to check what they go down to) and I also have a caliper and a bunch of tools

Let me know directions and such or call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX

Aaron
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: manofthefield on June 02, 2006, 04:56:44 PM
PMs sent with directions

I've got a full socket set, allen wrenches and a pretty good selection of most common tools.  I also have a couple of valve shims, but I forget what size they are.

Off the top of my head it would be nice to have a long flatblade to shut off the tank petcock and an extendable magnet

Ry: bring the valve tool and shims

Aaron: bring the caliper and feeler gauges if they get small enough

Bring anything else you think we might need or might want duplicates of; let me know if there's anything else we need
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: coll0412 on June 02, 2006, 07:21:24 PM
Caliper= Got it, reads to the thousands, but only to one decimal place in mm :cookoo:  so we might have to convert

Feeler Gauges= goes down to .038mm which should be fine, the lower tolerence is.03 millimeters so we are off .0003in

I will grab my new set of screw drivers, are you guys doing any carb work because I also have an impact screwdriver if you need it?

Otherwise I have carb cleaner if you need some, I even have some spare jets too.

I think I should be there 5:15ish.  Maybe between these two pictures you can figure out what I look like pic1 (http://www.gstwins.com/photogallery/albums/userpics/11439/103_0324a.JPG) pic2 (http://www.gstwins.com/photogallery/albums/userpics/11439/IMAG0208small.JPG)  ... but probably not.  I'm about 5'8" and have reddish hair.  Do you have any preffered place you usually park?

Cool.  I have often found a spot right on the north/south avenue to the east of Dulonos (the main drag)... usually 1/2 or 2/3 of the way down the block, on the Dulono's side.  It's probably because I get there on the way home, rather than going home first  8).

Maybe I can find time to photocopy a big "GSTwins.com" poster tomorrow, just so there's no ambiguity.

Post by: coll0412 on July 07, 2006, 02:43:15 PM
Parts yes....put together no

It is pretty simple though, just a 2X4 and some tubing and a little water so it could be done in under 30 minutes of labor.

I was thinking about next saturday or sunday(07/15 & 07/16) maybe do a sync and then go ride.

What kind of tire did you get, and where did you have it put on at Ry?

Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota

I got Avons AM51/AM52 HKM. I've had the rear on for the last thousand miles already and it works great. I ordered them at Americanmototire.com and had Al's cycle here in River Falls mount them for $25 each.

I'm gonna be busy this weekend, but lemme know how the carb sync goes if you get around to it.

Ciao

Ummm...quick question for you guys, where do you buy your oilfilters?

I seemed to have drained all my oil out of the crankcase, and then went up to Autozone only to find that no of the stores in the Twin Cities carry the SMO-00 filter any longer.

Damn Autozone

I've always bought Suzuki oil filters from the stealership in the past; I was going to go see if Leo's South had any in the next couple days

Okay, so the only place in Minneapolis is Napa Auto Parts on Lyndale just south of Uptown

Part #:FIL4931
Price: 6.49

But they stock only 1 at a time, but the guys said that it is a regular stock item for his store.
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota

I don't think the Suzuki ones are any more expensive than that, maybe even cheaper
Title: Re: Just moved to the Twin Cities area, Minnesota
Post by: coll0412 on August 14, 2006, 03:15:27 PM
THey are cheaper at Kline Suzkuki($5.09), but since I wanted my bike for today(monday) I was forced to pay. Plus the OEM filter is far superior to these aftermarket filters, which kinda blows.

Post by: manofthefield on August 14, 2006, 04:55:10 PM
I just bought one from Leo's south for $4.80, with tax.  The guy said they try to keep 5-10 in stock, I was pretty surprised

I have bought the Suzi ones, but usually buy the green HiFlo at Midwest Cycle Supply.
They're exactly the same price as the auto parts store ones, and may be higher quality.

I haven't found anyplace with the copper oil plug washer in town, so I'm still using what was on the bike when I bought it.

Checker sells them I believe I bought the 14MM copper washers for like $3, in fact I have like 3 left so if you want one or two they are all yours  I  mean I change my oil once a year so the chance that I will have these this long is rare.

BTW, today was the wettest ride I have ever done: wind blowing water so hard that one side of my face-shield was just a wavy puddle of water.  It looked like there was water inside the wheel, except that I didn't take the time to look and be sure.   I really should have zipped up all the airflow vents in my suit before I left work!

I was expecting a soaking today, but I missed almost all of the rain

A few weeks though ago I got very wet when I got caught in a downpour.  I guess I missed a bunch of hail that day... but it made for a fun commute home

Hang around for a little bit, any one up to get a drink(in the varity of soft or a(1) beer) at Bryant Lake Bowl?

Sorry, a vendor was buying beer  , so... maybe next month (if we have a sunny day).
I ride until Thanksgiving, so I'll still be out.

It's almost First Thursday again, well a week away.  I figured I'd give a little more advance warning this month cause I remembered it earlier.  Not even sure if I can make it, but I probably will.  At this moment, TWC says the weather should be ok, but we'll see what happens

Aaron, hope your having fun with your track mods/maintenance

For anyone else who might show up:
Weather looks pretty good, I'll probably get there around 5:30 after work and hang around til 7 or so, depending on how many bikes there are to look at.  I won't have my cell phone so let me know ahead of time if you want to find me... I'll be wearing my black JR textile jacket and probably khakis

I just read a web-page
http://www.motorbyte.com/norton/1st_thurs.htm
that seems to claim that the Dulono's First Thursday meetings started-out as meetings of the Twin Cities Norton Owners Club, who finally abandoned it because it got too big!
