Title: Does anyone have this ICON MAINFRAME helmet?
Post by: annguyen1981 on January 30, 2006, 09:15:55 PM
I'm gonna replace my POS no-name helmet from www.jcw.com

According to someone at a local dealership, the flat paint is easier to maintain verses the gloss.  I also want to get a purple iridium shield for it, cause I'm hooked on my current helmet's look.

The helmet on the left is the SOLID RUBATONE MAINFRAME and the right is the BLING RUBATONE MAINFRAME.  There is also a gold mirror shield, if I get the BLING version.  I'm gonna miss the modular style, but what I get for the price, I'm gonna look into regulars.  What do you think?

....my wife has an Icon Alliance helmet in the ruabtone style....it looks really nice....she likes it.....she doesn't use it much, but it hasn't shown any real wear yet....

....my glossy Arai on the other hand def. shows wear....course it's got thousands of more miles....and a few klunk drops too....I've been hunting for a Mainframe with the Scorpion graphics.....I tried one on and really liked the fit....

I've got the alliance herlmet and i like it...the mainframe is even better. you can remove the cheek pads. Also, the ICON helmets have a very easy to remove shield.

I don't know what a "klunk drop (s)" is, but I've read that any drop over 2-3 feet onto a hard surface effectivly eliminates a helmets ability to absorb impact as the EPS foam becomes compacted.  Food for thought.

klunk drop = Sometimes a clumsy motorcyclist will have a not-riding accident involving involuntary droppage of the helmet. "Klunk" refers to the sound emitted from helmet hitting the floor. The fall is usually a short distance, although it can occur from heights as high as the handlebars.  This action is generally followed by a series of loud unintelligible swears or by a Homer-esc "Doh!"

I have the flat black mainframe with the skulls graphics on back (my son picked it out). so far its ok. their seems to be a lot of air inside when riding. A little cold in the winter. The visor is easy to change, and they seem to run a little larger in size. I bought an extra-large because thats what they said i needed. I should have bought a large. This is my first helmet so i have nothing to compair to, but my head seems to get pushed around a lot at speeds over 65 mph.

...yeah....I too noticed the sizing...I usually wear a Large....but I tried on on and I was swimming in it....Medium fits very nicely....also.....get a gaiter neck or something similar to wear around your neck...it will keep a lot of wind out of the helmet.....and keep your head/neck warmer in these chilly months...

I've got a black SOLID RUBATONE one, I love how it looks. The top vents do a very good job of circulating enough but not too much air.. on a dry day when I'm moving, I can huff and puff all I want (with mouth/chin vents closed) and I can't fog the visor, even if it's 30-degree air. At low speeds it fogs quickly in cold air, haven't had a chance to wear the helmet in hot weather yet. I got one of those insert-mask-things that are supposed to seal around the nose and direct air downward, but I haven't got it adjusted right yet as I still fog up sometimes. Only bad thing I have to say about the helmet is the aerodynamics aren't perfect - it's fine when looking forward, but if I turn my head I can definitely feel the wind. Still, I got the thing for $150, so I guess I can't complain that it's not as nice as a $1200 Arai or Shoei.

If you're really looking far this helmet, I think Ebay always has them for around 135~180.

I saw and fell in love with the Icon Mainframe Skull helmet(http://i23.ebayimg.com/04/i/06/42/2a/60_1.JPG)  last night and tried it on...perfect fit! I now realize that my HJC doesn't fit right (too big) and I read good things about the Icon Mainframes and Alliances here: http://teamoregon.orst.edu/to_web/PDF/Blowing%20the%20Lid%20Off,%20Motorcyclists%206-05,%20D.%20Ford.pdf

I guess a lower number means it's better, and the Icons were the lowest in their category.

New Enough has them for $210, and I have seen some on eBay at a Buy-It-Now price of $180. I'm in!
