OK guys and gals    there has been talk of a deals gap weekend get away.   but i feel that wee need to put a date together that will work for every one or as many as possable. i had to put in for the trip at work before i even had a bike if that gives you any idea of how much time it took me to get off, and i am sure there are some of you in the same hard spots.

so after a month has been chosen we then should focus on a date. and i am here to tell you the week ends fill up fast so mabe a week or a part of a week would be better and less people on the road to share it with. thats just a thought.

thats just the gap there are so many roads such as 28 that has just as many turns as it does and is less travled.
   please post your thoughts and ideas so that every one can try to make this the first annual meet or what not.


there are room for rent and camping slots next tiem i plan to camp, its far cheaper and i haven't done it in a while.

I'll be there the first full week of June. The main days I'll be there will be June 9 through 11. I'll be there with my father at the FZ1 yearly rally, so it'd be cool if there were some GSers there too!

I guess most of the west coast riders won't be coming for this event.  Even tho I live in MA, I'm not gonna be able to attend.  This just enforces my plan on moving.

I dunno. There are guys from the FZ1 rally that are from Cali and Washington. One guy RODE from Seattle. Went through a set of tires just getting there, another set while he was there, and another set going back! :laugh:

I can be there pretty much anytime, I only live two hours away :) Count me in!  June 9th-11th would be fine for me, btw.

Hmm. Depending on when it is, I'd consider this. It is a good 12-13 hour ride, but if there is gonna be a big GS turn out, I'd definitely consider it. I can usually get off plenty of time from work without an issue, but I'd rather find someone up this way and ride down. 12 hours alone sucks. I'm interested, though. We'll see  8)

Yeah, I had considered riding out to TX sometime this summer to see a friend. Not a definite, but I've been teeter-tawtering back and forth. If I did this, I wouldn't do that - and if I do that, I won't do this. Or I might not do either, who knows. And I've ridden more than 11-12 hours in a day  :thumb:

I graduate in May, but I have to finish some classes in June, and July, so if I can make it during summer classes I will, otherwise I'll be done in August some time, and I'll be job hunting.

so june is a good mabe then, for now what dates do we want to throw out there to try for.

I think there are going to be 75+ FZ1s at least, if not more. There were at least that many at the 2004 rally.

sometime last july would be good for me, the end of the 1st intersession of summer classes.

so mabe june and july, not bad that could mean a good back up if it rains, what you you plan on doing hotel or camping. iplan to camp this time at it will be warmer any way unlike back in oct

hrm, I'm gonna be over that way first weekend of april, but doubt i get to take the bike (anniversary trip) once everyone decides a time i'll try and make it since it's only about 3-4 hrs away for me. that is if it falls on one of my weekends off

I camped on my last trip up there, it was a lot of fun.  There's a great campsite just 10 minutes up the road.  My buddies and I are going to travel down there a lot this spring and camp...two bikes (my GS500E and my buddies CBR600RR) being ridden and all our camping gear being thrown into my S2000 (sad when your cargo vehicle is a 2 seat roadster  :laugh: )

thats ok. so is my ranger but i just have a larger trunk and umm,, a lot slower handling speed but it will still supise you. i may end up taking my dads 02 ram this trip. i will have my buddy ninja 500 and him and that ranger had a hard time giting there in one piece last time. mater fact i lost part of my bellhousing.   and i may bring my dad he needs a weekend off any way     30 years of work can take a toll on some one if they dont have fun or take a vactaion..

If the dates work out for me i might be interested in going too... I love to camp and would love to bring my new DRZ.  I am within 4 hours or so.

July would be better for me, but there  is no telling, I've got summer classes, and then I have to find a real job and be an adult.  I'm not trying to rush anything, but the sooner a date gets locked down, the better.  Oh, and it is quite a long ride for me, but I really want to go, and unless I win the lotto, I'll be looking for a campsite.   :cheers:

I'm game for something this summer...And a set in stone date would help muchos, I have no problem getting a couple of days off anytime this summer June 9-11 works for me

It's next to Robbinsville, NC and there's a little motel right on the tail that you can stay in and there's a bunch more hotels in town, and one of them has an attached motorcycle garage for each room. Here's a site http://www.tailofthedragon.com/, it's got a few different places to stay. I'm sure there's a super 8 or holiday inn there as well that may be little cheaper.

Please whoever is in charge, please, oh please set a date.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to go, but needs a lot of time to plan ahead.

may I make a suggestion? I went to deals gap last year (my avitar is a killboy shot of me acctualy) and the Ironhorse lodge is a Great place and gives a group discount.. they basicaly bent over backwards for us to make sure we had everything we needed and were having a good time.. they have a large overhang to keep the bikes under during the day and at night if you like they have a HUGE locked garage you can keep your bike in there really great people.. was $15 a night for me to stay I think.. they have bunkhouses camping areas cabins.. theyve got a bonfire pit.. serve breakfeast and dinner for a small fee (cheaper than eating anywhere else in the area and tastes better too) just a killer place I really cant praise them enough and I know anytime Im down there thats where Im staying... June 23-25 is the YZF-600R group meet..  its hard not to find a weekend where the gap isnt crowded.. but there are a lot of other great roads in the area too  :cheers:

buy the way guys and this will be how i roll this time

if you have stock tires and plan to go fast or what not, then you will low or high side. i am telling you right now.
do not plan to ride like that on street tires, the dragon will heat them up and they (even as weak as the gs is) will start to wash out.

find some track tires and i run about 32-34 lbs of air and they held great but that was on the stock front and new rear tire. my front tire is shot i will not make another pas on the gap with it. but she fine for hwy non max lean stuff.

Just remember when you're there that this isn't a race. There is no trophy at the end of the road. Ride your own pace and don't overstep your bounds or skill level. Make sure your bike is in good condition and up to snuff with maintenance.

PREFERABLY upgrade your suspension too, as the stock stuff is crap.

yep, there was another yellow 04 owner up there on sun. man my bike was one sharp cookie when it was new like his, he only had 1900 miles on it, then he looks at mine and says wow 11k hows it been.

i have only had to replace the rear tire, be for this trip thats it. then i rode off to the damn.

I'm assuming most of us wont be out to set record times. Myself, I like to get a little wild but plan on just having some fun. A buddy of mine might be coming on his Monster. Should be a good trip. Maybe we should start a mailing list?

I'm staying with the FZ1 guys at the resort there. They have cabins and stuff that the guys got reservations for. There is a hotel there that is pretty good too.

that iron horse lodge sounds great, If I can get a couple of people want want to go in with me ill make the arangements.

Camping sounds good, too.   I'd rather drop $100 on camping gear (I can take back home) than $60 on a hotel room.

I can't find anything on the web about campgrounds though.  Got any info? links?

You can fit camping gear you just have to get some saddle bags and know how to pack. I can fit a sleeping bag, 3 man tent, stove, pots/food for a couple days. You can camp in the national forest in a lots of areas, its great smokey mountain national forest, do a search on yahoo.

They have a cool 5'X6' kids tent that folds into a rectangle about 24"X4"x4"  sweet!    $20
a fleece sleeping bag that could hang on my front forks.                                            $10

what else do I need?  I have enough space for cold/wet weather gear Just in case.

i can buy food and snacks on the road.   I'm might need a flashlight.

Don't forget rope, a tarp, perhaps a small folding chair? Don't forget a good knife as well as matches, just in case. Just gonna buy non-cooking food?

I'm not. I would say the bast meeting point would be the gas station/restaurant/motel at the beginning of the dragon, but a meeting time would be helpful. I'll have no say on that though.

I figure we'll decide that when we get closer to  it and people start to really commit.

i am trying to ge the cbr runing but tools, it seems, are harder to find for this bike than the parts. but in any case even if i sell the gs i will be there. i got to get this cbr runing.

Well all, it looks as if I'll be coming on the 9th - 11th now.  I was going to go the next weekend with the R1 forum, but my wife has me taking her to Chicago to see Madonna instead.  We should seriously look into camping/staying together.  I'll be towing my bike down with the Town & Country.

We are on US Highway 129 where it meets North Carolina State Road 28, just south of the Tennessee and North Carolina State line. We are 18 miles north of Robbinsville, NC.

From the North:

From I-81 merge onto I-40 West towards Knoxville, TN.

OR

From I-75 head south, and exit at I-275 south towards Knoxville, TN. Merge onto I-40 West and stay in the left lane of the two lane exit. This will put you in the correct lane for your exit.

Once you approach Knoxville, TN look for exit number 386B, marked "US 129 / Smoky Mountains". Follow US 129 south for approximately 54 miles. Watch for the US129 signs. Always follow signs for US129. It will turn at a few intersections where the main road continues straight, so you will miss it if you are not paying attention! As you approach North Carolina, you will ride the Dragon, and it's 318 curves in 11 miles, and then you will see the state line and the "Welcome to North Carolina" sign. We are on the left once you enter North Carolina.

From the South:

From the Atlanta area take I-575 north until it ends and merges into the 515. Follow the 515 north. From the 515 take the 60 North/East towards Murphy. At this point the road will have merged with US highway 129. Stay on US 129 North. We are located 18 miles north of Robbinsville, NC.From the East:

Follow I-40 from Asheville to exit 27 marked "Waynesville / 74 " Stay on 74 west until you see the signs for North Carolina state road 28. Exit right onto 28 North. This roads ends in our parking lot.

From the West:

Take I-40 to Knoxville, look for exit 386B and follow the directions above in "From the North."

I'll be at the Iron Horse Campground on my GS from North Alabama.  I plan on ridding some of the other roads too but I'll ride over to the meeting spot.

2nd that. I need to work a bunch after finals to put some cash aside. right now I'm figuring around 1200 miles so 75 bux for gas, 2 nights in hotel if need be 130 bux(incase of a wash out), 4 days of food at 100 bux, and finally park fees at 60 bux, For a grand total of 360 bux for a 3 day trip. Plus a couple new parts for the GS. It adds up quickly.

i only ate once a day, about 6-8$ bucks would do. in robbinsonville(spell) thet have a good all you eat pizza place its great, a wndeys(spell) and i think a buger king.

Well, that $60 is included in the $130 because you can only camp or hotel it, not both.  But for $300 the ride is Priceless!

I've toured this area plenty of times and it can be done cheaply:
$75 - gas (hard to improve on with high gas prices)
$20 x 2 nights for tent w/ tax even through rain - I've done it 3 nights in a row!
$15 x 3 days for food (bring some snacks from home to eat for breakfast and eat out only one meal - dinner)

= $160

My estimates are counting for a wash out. I always put 2 days in for hotels into the budget incase it turns into a total washout. But I do plan on camping. And I'm planning on maybe coming up Thursday or staying an extra day to make a 4 day weekend out of it.

well, it seems as if i will not be there with the gs500. on thurs will be the last time i see it.

it is sold, 3600$ 12K miles its been a fun ride. but i will still be coming, but with my 95 cbr f3 600, i just hope i have it runing by then.

I'll join you guys, sounds like a good weekend for my first trip to the Gap on a bike (I've been up 7-8 times in my sports car).  You'll just have to forgive my sloooooowness.  Also, I'll be camping out too, and I'd like to add that there are some great campsites around the area if the Crossroads one fills up.  So no worries about being homeless...hell, if worst comes to worst, my apartment is only 2 hours away  :laugh:

The Iron Horse Campground is the best place to stay.  They have a bunkhouse where you can get an inside bed for only $18 a night $15 for a tent.  Only 20 miles (curves included) to Deal's Gap.

Looks like a nice site, now that I think about the ones I usually stay at are a little ways down gravel roads...not fun on a street bike.

So, it looks like I'll be attending, but not on a GS500E...mine has not been running well, so if everything goes as planned today I'll be picking up a 2003 Honda CBR600RR.  The GS has been a great bike to learn on, but it's just not reliable enough for around town driving or travel of any kind.  Basically I've just been going on pleasure rides through the nearby countryside.  I've already got word of another rider who needs a starter bike, time to return it to the community I guess...and yes, it's better now than it was when I got it :)

I think that my friend and I will be coming.  It depends on him really, and whether we can find accomodations (camping would work for me).  I won't ride up though.  We'll put both bikes in the back of my truck.

BOOOO! You can only be in the GS Gang if you ride yur bike up there. Between us we'll have 5000 CC's of furry!

Might as well've ridden down to the Gap... just as far of a trip as you took. I know it may be stupid to take your new bike down there, but heck, I took my GS to the gap after only a month of owning it, (first streetbike) and nothin bad happened to me...some squid on his brand new ZX-6R (never ridden a street motorcycle before that day) totaled his bike and broke his hip right behind me passin a friggin semi tho...

Heheh, you have no idea how tempted I am to take my bike down there.  I frequent the Gap a lot in my S2000, where I like to prove to 600 riders that a car CAN keep up with a bike when properly driven.  But...I've seen enough bikers to go down, and have enough respect for this bike, that I set this trip as my first to the Gap on the bike in order to give myself time to learn.

The GS felt fast in a straight line.  The 600RR is TERRIFYING, lol. 

i am still hoping i can make it, need a job to help fund it.

We might even go both ways, one there, one back.

I suggest not going through alaska.  Of course, that's just me. :)

If you go through atlanta, one suggestion I have is to go 19/400 due north heading toward alpharetta/dahlonega - this becomes hwy 129 which is the same 129 as the dragon and just follow it straight up via some really nice twisties.

I might be in danger of not makin it. I've got a few issues.

the bike isnt registered ( i rode to cocoa beach last week 1000mi+ on the tags for my 99' on the 01' i just rebuilt)

I will be on a business trip to Savanah, GA until the 8th. 
and I am in the process of selling my house in Atlanta.

none of which are deal breakers but come close.

Alright, it looks like I won't be able to show up for this meet. I need to take a summer school course and it is only offered June 1 to July 6, no other options. I need this class too, otherwise I'd just do it later.

right now i am up in the air with this, the cbr may be sold and then i will need to get the gs road ready again. soooo.... heres the deal i was thinking move the date to july 21-24 fri-mon so i will reset the poll and lest vote again.

i know this will put some in a spot, but doing the math, i can't i just started a job. but late july would give me the time i need.

but i guess we could hit it up in two groups. what do you all think?

I think June 9-11 is pretty much set in stone for some since it's less than 2 weeks away and they've made arrangements.  However, I'm sure that those who can't make it this time would welcome another chance.

well, its a great bike, but 120 miles per tank and has to have prem (runs like crap with reg and mid) too the gs's 230 havent even hit the reserve and take regular soo.

but the gs handles just fine, its just a little slower. the front tire could stand to be a litle better as the gap has worn my stocker out on the sides. if i go this will be the last time the front tire will be there.

I'll be camping in the GSMNP.  I was checking though, and they don't have showers.  Any ideas on where to get one?  4 days of riding with no shower is not a good combination....

Edit: nevermind about the showers.  They said facilities are available in surrounding communities, and they can direct you to them at the ranger station.

ooo any one have a valve checking set they can bring? if you have shims and tool that would b e even better. i realy need to check the valves and if you have done it before i would really love for you to help me.

I dont have any saddle bags, But im shure i can wing If you want to meet. Im not shure if you'll have room but if you do i was wondering if I  Can cram my gear in your traler/cage. It would just make the trip that much easier.

I just got back today from up there and I crashed along with about 20 others due to oil on the road.
3 riders were killed during the weekend.
I had fun though.
Don't know if I can make it, still busted up, and looks like no one really knows if they're going.
If I go it will be at the last min.
Maybe by then people can nail down their plans.

WELL, I'M A DOUCHEBAG! I don't know if I will be able to make it to the weekend. My bike is out cold with starting problems, and unless my friend will let me ride his ninja 250 while we're up there, I won't be coming. I've already got the days off and everything.

Well the "y'all" part is relative. A few are going now, a few later. This wasn't a very organized gathering. I'm going to be mainly sticking with the FZ1 crowd probably. Show them literbikers they should invest in some skilllz.

i know one thing, last time i was there i was going a lot slower, and i don't plan on getting crazy like i did my every first time, (i wrecked). but the big thing now is the cops are up there with heilo's getting speeders.

by all means ride at your own pace, but theres nothing like a healthy ride if the two or more can stick together for a good vid. which i would like to make, i get the lead and you behind and then swap the mounts (grab bar) and then you tape me.

you know, i am getting really sick and damn tired of trying to sell this bike.

last two weeks all this guy says is, want that bike, i want that bike. and then last friday we go to the bank. he get the loan for the bike. so now he has the money. I'm like ok i will give you the bike and bring the title on weds at work, but he wanted to wait till weds, ok no problem, that way i can bring it on the trailer and drive the truck ect... so long story we then decided that friday would be better to do it all as we got off late on wed, from work (after 5). now its thurs night, in the past week i have had 3 calls on the bike. and i told them all that the bike was sold, and to please call back in-case it wasn't (which i hope they do now). he calls me after all this and says that his buddy found him a bike for 1100$. well f%$k you ass hole.

days i spent thinking that this was a for sure thing, road the f%$king bike to and from work twice on my trailer only to have to bring it home. thats money in gas i didn't have to spend. and a lost possible sale. 


I'm so pissed right now it is beyond the point of any thing i have ever experienced.

i may just kill this guy.  i will be getting gas money out of this fucker at least.

Alright, I'm f%$king excited. I just got some brand new Dunlop D208s for $142.60 total. I am missing a rotor for my Kat wheel though, but if I get that I'll have nice sticky rubber for the Gap. f%$king awesome.

I just put some fresh rubber on up front yesterday.  Plus I just ordered some saddle bags and gloves from newenough.com ,I too am excited.

i am going to have to make do with the bt-45 front and maxxis promaxx m6103 rear till i get the nex set.

the rear did great last trip but the front bt-45 i could really feel being pushed in the turns. i may try some diffrent tire pressure and see what happens.

Looks like the second trip for me.  Damn girls!

i will have my truck packed tomorrow, but i have a problem with the gs. it seems that the rear tire will need a patch, wheeler said he could fix it for 10$ so friday morning i will fill it and ride it over there.

ash man went down late sat evening. came in to hot and did a good job of saving it, but sill got in the ditch and then fellover, i was behind him a good way and could smell the rubber around the cornner,
