Mello,
Loveland Ohio here! There was a rather active  poster from the river city this past spring/summer but I haven't seen him post for awhile. I have to admit that during these gloomy, dreary, cold winter months my bike enthusiasm and my activity on this Forum wanes a bit. Anyway, maybe we can stay in touch, at least on the Forum through the winter. BTW, I've got an original, unmolested '89 GS500.

Right on, finally someone else from cincinnati replies...
I rode today! 2.14.06...it was 48!
You guys need to get on with the club i met...E.B.C. (http://www.erlangerbikersclub.com/) join!
These guys are super cool...the first time i actually met up with them was in december...i live in western hills and met them out in erlanger in 20 degree weather! sign up...they say over the summer they meet up and ride together once a week...
Pnaberhaus...i have a buddy that lives in milford off 28...he rides an 05 ninja 500R...he's taken me all over that area and i must say those rodes out there are badass! especially 9 mile er one of those 'mile' roads.
Evilscooby...buy that turboed GS :icon_lol: that guys said he's in cincinnati...

Mello,
When I ride, it's usually out on the westside. Like you mentioned, Miami River Road and all hilly & twisty bits around it. I'm sure you've blasted through Buffalo Ridge, Zion Hill Rd, Dunlap Rd, Day Rd, Cliff Rd, etc. Since I usually work 50+ hours a week, including every Saturday, I don't have the time I'd like to have to ride. However, I'm going to watch for your posts on this Forum and maybe get to ride with you and some of the folks you've mentioned.
Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: melloGS on February 15, 2006, 10:59:01 PM
Right on...I rode today...my usual route would be muddy creek, all the way into devil's backbone, south, bridgetown, zion hill, buffalo ridge, e miami river rd., all the way too colerain...then i take 275w to 74 to rybolt exit...
Day road is sometimes my turn around if i don't wanna take the highway back, either uphill or downhill, the first time i did it was uphill and I seriously blasted up it.
:2guns: My record from harrison to colerain on e miami river road is 13 minutes. Didn't pass, or see one car on the road until i got past the top Day rd.. It was prolly like 10a.m. :2guns:
After that I got a ticket on wesselman...that was one month after i got my bike.

Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: pnaberhaus on February 16, 2006, 10:26:00 AM
Mello,
Thirty (yeah, that's 30) years ago my buddies and I would ride our "cafe racers" (now known as "sport bikes"), north up Colerain, left and down Dunlap, left on Miami River, then left and "up" Day Rd back to Colerain. The amazing thing about all this is we rode individually, timing one another wiith a stopwatch. Nobody ever had an accident, the police were never around, and to my knowledge, no one ever complained! After we each took one hot lap though, we left our little "circuit", not to return again for about a week. Back then, there wasn't the traffic, development and housing that is there today. But the roads themselves, the curves, straights, the ups and downs, really haven't changed. Even though I've lived on the east side since '78, those roads, and those out in Indiana(Rt. 46 is a favorite), still remain my favorite venues to ride.
Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: melloGS on February 16, 2006, 11:45:44 AM
Now that's what i'm talkin' about...I'm pretty much doin' what you and your buddies we're doing back in the day. Thirty years ago i was -2... :icon_lol:
I'm gonna ride your route, but if you could clarify it alittle more for me that would help...I haven't ridden dunlap I don't think.
I'd say to ride the harrison to colerain on e miami but, ...I'm prolly just a lucky guy to have made it in 13min. ...I rode it yesterday, the speed limit all the way and got harrison to colerain in about 25min. ...That's when i thought about it, not too smart. :icon_lol:
I need to check out Rt. 46...As for indiana, i've only gone Rt. 50 to lawrenceburg. That one has an ignorant story to it too.
Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: pnaberhaus on February 16, 2006, 06:16:58 PM
Mello,
Dunlap Road runs west off of Colerain Avenue, just before Colerain twists and turns downhill into E. Miami River Road. There are so many cool roads that wend their way around the hills, valleys and river in that area that you can spend an afternoon there riding a number of "circuits". I'm sure you've ridden UP Colerain Avenue from the Miami River Rd/Ross area. Unfortunately in the 30+ years that I've be riding in that area, vehicular traffic and residential development has increased the hazards of pushing the sport bike envelope.

Mello,
Jeez. it's cold this morning, 19 degrees when I left for work! I admire your fortitude when it's this cold. Besides the cold temps and wind chill factor, ya gotta be really careful in the corners, what with all the salt they  put on the roads yesterday 'cause of a lousy 1" of snow. The people here in the river city are truly "weenies" when it comes to dealing with a little cold weather precipitation. :icon_rolleyes:

Anyhow, I myself am a "weenie" when the temps get this cold! So besides the excuse of having to work today, I wouldn't ride today 'cause I'd freeze my drillies off. Thursday, when it got to 64 degrees, I didn't ride then either, cause I worked a 12 hour day. Such is life. Soon as it gets a little warmer, I think I'm gonna put a set of Sport Demons on,  I'm sure the GS will handle better after that upgrade.

Keep the faith and the rubber side down :thumb:

05GS500f,
Glad that we will have you aboard. Not too far from Fairfield, there are some VERY good roads west of there, as "Mello" and I will testify. When you get settled, be in touch with us on the Forum and we will share some excellent bike venues with you!

Hey, since this is the cincinnati thread, I was just wondering how the University is down there because I am considering going to college there. Then you will be stuck with me. Oh yeah, I forgot, freshmen don't get to have a car (which I assume that my GS falls under this catagory)

Went for a brief ride on Friday, really enjoyed all the salt that lies on the roads and what the cooler temps do for tire elasticity. Stopped at the dealer and ordered a set of Sport Demons and bought a new 3-season riding jacket. Sunday's temps were 10 degrees cooler, so knowing my tires get harder as the temps drop and that there is still too much loose crap on the roads, I wussed out and left the GS tucked in the garage.

Mel,
Thanks for the update. A decent turnout indeed, 'specially considering the temps weren't all that great. As I posted before, had to work again Sunday :flipoff:. It looks, from your pic, that you had an eclectic mix of bikes. Sport bikes, I see a "Tourer", a chopper, and who knows what else. Do you all ride together, or do you break out in groups based on bike type, riding styles, pace, or destination preferences?
Thanks for keeping the rest of us posted. Hope to get my new tires mounted soon and plan on having a "golden oldie" (my '89 GS and me) join your troupe!
Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: melloGS on March 22, 2006, 09:18:55 PM
Pnaeber your in like flint with your GS! I have the smallest sportbike of the group so far...there are other guys that have ninja 500s but are yet to show...I really hope you can make this coming sunday's ride. It's my 'anderson ferry' ride.
As for how the group rides? Last sunday's ride was the official first ride of the year and the biggest turnout yet. the touring bike was a kawasaki, and then there were three other cruiser harleys and an amazing 'beatles' custom painted bike, and three rat bikes...people got left behind due to lack of communication and knowledge of riding in groups, because some of us are speed freaks...My ride will be different cause i have the spotlight and will inform people of how to ride in the group...
I've incorperated e miami river rd and buffalo ridge in my ride!!
hope to see all of you locs there!

Heya, new to the forums, going to buy a GS500 from a dealer on Tuesday. I live in Adam's County now (a bit east of Eastgate) but I'm in Cincinnati all the time. I moved out here from Oxford and have family in Millville and Ross, so I know all the roads too. I'd love to get in one a few rides, as would my friends I know (although they've got 650s and will be blowing past me constantly I'm sure).

Nice to meet some Cinci people.

Solaron,
Welcome to the GS Forum. Nice to have another GS poster aboard. Mello seems to ride a lot, regardless of the temps, and has kept the Forum posted. I work virtually every weekend and 3 nights a week, so I never seem to have a whole lot of free time. I live in Loveland in Clermont County and Mello lives on the westside. Maybe some Sunday we can meet up on the eastside somewhere and head west and link up w/Mello. The Forum here seems to be a good clearinghouse for determining whose going where, and when. I'm still waiting for my new tires to come in and I'm anxious to "break them in" and get a feel for them before I do some serious riding.

Mello,
Hope you (and your bike) are OK, considering. Over here in Loveland, it was mighty overcast, but around 2:30 I decided to chance the rain and ride. 30 minutes and 17 miles into the ride it started to rain  The first Sunday in three that I don't have to work, and the weather is crappy.

Anyway, are you OK, and how did the bike fare? The other riders? Accident report? Road conditions, rider error or cagers to blame? Inquiring minds want to know!

Hey, Cincy Peeps

Freeridersclub.com (http://freeridersclub.com) is going to have a ride down to
3rd Annual Motorcycle Show
Sponsored by River Rat Cycle Shop & O'Rourke's Pub
Downtown Maysville, Ky.

They will be meeting up to start this ride between 10:30 - 11:00
at the Shell Station on the AA Hwy. (Wilder, Ky. exit south) across
from the Waffle House.....weather permitting, of course.
We plan on riding 915, 10, 1121, 10 again, 165......to Blue Licks
Battlefield State Park for lunch......then 68 to Maysville for the
BIKE SHOW (mid-afternoon). Routes home can be determined by
time availability.

So we ALL (whoever is going, that is) are meeting at the Shell station, There will be 2 groups the "aggressive" riders, and the less agressive ones. We will just have to wait and see who shows up, who wants to ride which style, etc. This ride is to try and get as many as possible out, so all riding styles shall be accomodated.

Remember, FreeRiders are for everyone, and all styles, folks! So come and join the fun!

Mello,
Here it is a beautiful late afternoon, and I work 'till 9:00 pm (or later)

Anyway, here's a nice route for you to follow, if you're so inclined.

Start at SR127(Hamilton Ave) & West Kemper Rd and head WEST on W. Kemper,

Turn left on Bank Rd, and follow it 'till it dead ends on (Old) Colerain Ave.

Turn right(North) on Colerain 'till you get to Dunlap Rd and turn left there

Turn left off Dunlap onto Gosling and continue 'till you dead end at Day Rd

Turn right on Day Rd 'till you get to Miami River Rd and turn left there

Stay on Miami River 'till you get to Blue Rock Rd and turn left there,

First road on your right is Flick Rd, turn  there,

Follow Flick Rd to Thompson Rd and turn right there,

Thompson Rd takes you back down to Miami River Rd, turn left there,

When you get to Harrison Ave (RT. 52), turn left (East)

Turn right off Harrison onto Wesselman Rd and follow it 'till you get to Zion Hill Rd

Turn right onto Zion Hill 'till it dead ends at Buffalo Ridge Rd and turn left there,

Ride Buffalo Ridge until you're back (again) on East Miami River Rd.

Turn left back onto E. Miami River and ride into Cleves,

Go into the town of Cleves and near the Rt 50 intersection, find CLIFF ROAD.

Unfortunately, I can't give you specific directions here because I find it w/o
looking at all the little street names down in the village of Cleves.

After you've ridden up and down Cliff Rd which becomes Dugan Gap Rd, I'll let you find your
way back. It won't be difficult, and you'll find additional fun roads as well.

Have fun, keep the rubber side down, watch for gravel and drag the pegs for me! :thumb:

I can't believe it. When the weather has been nice, I've had to work, including Sundays. The few times I have the whole day off, its rained or been threatening rain. This weekend, I'm going to Columbus, Ohio to see my just-born, 1st grandchild and staying a few days. With wife and baby stuff to bring, it won't be a bike trip. This past March, I got new Sport Demons on my GS, and I can't believe I have not yet had the opportunity to scrub them in and get a "feel" for them. This coming w/e, being "Father's Day" w/e, I figured surely I'd get a chance to ride, but now that won't happen.

At any rate, thanks for the constant updates, and ONE of these days, I 'll get over there to ride with your group.

Finally, I've had days off and the weather's been nice (last Friday, last Sunday, this coming Sunday), and the f*&#@ bike won't run! These new Sport Demons only have  only 6 miles on them. I put in a new battery last weekend, still doesn't run worth a damm. Now I'm thinking it's a coil/ignitor/ignition wire problem. Someday, I'm gonna havta ride with you guys. This Sunday, I gotta work(again) Even IF I didn't have to work, I couldn't ride 'cause the #%*^&@ GS isn't running right(again) Went out to ride last Sunday, and it acts like it's hitting on one cylinder 'till the rpms get to about 6K. At this point, I don't know if it's the coil, ignition wires, or......? I'm going to try to get it to a dealer tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed :icon_rolleyes: that they can determine what the malady is. Since I got new tires on it this April, I've only been able to put ........88 miles on it! :o I'm sure you put that on in one Sunday's ride. Between work, rain on my day off, and troubleshooting this problem, I've missed most of summer's riding season.

Good to see you're still around :thumb: Finally got everything sorted out on my '89 (I think). Carb problems seem to be a thing of the past. New progressives in the forks now. Took to the twisties last Sunday for the first ride of the season.....bike runs really good and man, am I rusty plus I gotta learn these new tires and front end. Unfortunately, I gotta work this Sat and Sun, but I continue to monitor this Forum, so post your upcoming rides and maybe I'll finally be able to join you guys (prolly as a "back marker" though ) :icon_lol:

I bought my bike from a private owner. She only rode it from her house to the OSU main campus so it had really low miles on it. the price was right too. That's how I became a member of the GS500 club.

Can't wait for summer dude. I've been slacking on my ridding lately because of all the homework I've been getting and I hope to start making up for lost time.

It's good to see (hear) that you still lurk here occasionally. I work every Wednesday night. I've never heard of the "quaker steak & lube". Do you know specifically where it is? Even though you be on the west side, now that my GS finally runs well, keep this thread alive with your posts of your rides. Perhaps some of the Columbus crew, myself and some newbies can get together on one of your weekend get-togethers. We GS riders can be your "back-markers" :icon_lol:

Just got back from Cincy and I really envy you guys.  The roads are great for riding (at least the ones I took) and I'd be willing to bet the riding season is longer than it is here (in Chicago). My fiancee is there for training and she doesn't like it but I think it has more to do with the area and the lack of entertainment (comparatively) so I can't talk her into a transfer.  Still, you guys are really lucky to have all the winding roads and beautiful country to ride in.  On the drive back I really started to notice the rough pavement and stop-n-go traffic here.  It sorta makes me not want to have a bike here since I'd spend all my time avoiding traffic and what's the fun in that?  Very impressive.  Ride safe.

On nice Friday nites, some bikes show up on Rt.28 in Milford by the Steak-N-Shake-Sears-Krogers parking lot for the weekend cruise-in.......hot rods, '60s muscle, big blocks, a few classic sports cars and some tricked-out Hondas, Subies and VWs. Just started riding a month ago, so I don't want to hold anyone back in the twisties, but I should be ready sometime soon after my MSF class Oct. 5,6,& 7th. Let's kick some Patriot's A-- tommorrow night! Gotta go 4 now.... too nice to be typing and not riding.

ABS,
I wonder if you are one of the 4 GS500s that I've seen in the Loveland area in the last two weeks. Two were "naked" GS500s , one was yellow w/fairing and the other was black w/fairing. I live just off Branch Hill-Guinea, which is where I saw two of the GS twins. Maybe one of them was you!?! Yesterday (Sunday) I had to work, but I try to get a little riding in here and there on Fridays or Sundays when I don't hafta work. Stay in touch on this Forum.

I have an 04 yellow 500Fwith the fairings and flush mount turn signals. I have a matching yellow HJC helmet with graphics. When I start getting out to loveland, I'll have to look out for you. Just wanted to say hello.  Not a GS owner or motorcycle owner yet.  I am signed up to take the MSF course in March though.  I have been trying to get into it for about 3 years ago.  Last time I was signed up for a course the weekend before it started, I blew my knee out playing ball.  It took this long for it to feel 100% againl, so I am giving it a go again in the spring.  I have been keeping my eyes open for a GS for a while now.

pnauberhaus... I love that the original 89, so simple and clean.
Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: ABSOLUTNATI on December 19, 2007, 04:10:02 PM
Are you from Cincinnati? I ended up taking the course at NKU. It cost $150, but I got in right away..... go figure......but I HAD to start riding!! Sorry to hear about your knee. The GS was the perfect bike to start on for me. Light, agile, powerful enough, good looking, cheap to insure, easy to maintain......... the list goes on!
Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: william_thorn on December 24, 2007, 09:26:31 AM
Yeah, I live near West Chester and work in Springdale, so far north side of Cincy.  I never thought of NKU.  I signed up for the riders edge course at Aces and Eights HD in Mason.  It was pricey but started up in March while the MSF courses through Scarlet Oaks didn't start until May.  Plus before I had tried to sign up for the Scarlet Oaks courses for about a year before.  When I finally got registered for the class it was in Beavercreek (NE Dayton).  So I have been trying to work this out in one way or another for about 5 years.

Maybe I should start a new topic... but... did you guys start riding at the course or before?  I have never been around motorcycles at all.  None of my buddies growing up had them.  Now the only folks that I know with bikes have things too expensive and or powerful to learn on.  I have done a lot of research and decided on a GS500.  Now I am trying to decide if I should just go ahead and pick up a bike now with my learners permit or wait until the end of the course.

Title: Re: Cincinnati
Post by: ABSOLUTNATI on December 25, 2007, 09:59:42 AM
Same goes for me, never rode anything before, or even sat on one. My neighbor bought a big nighthawk 750 @450lbs. I kind of worked the cluth a little in the parking lot. Other than that, nothing. I bought my GS about two weeks before the course. I have a big parking lot that I practiced in and eventually made my way on the side streets to UDF when I was comfortable. Little by little I got better. I did ride my GS to the course. I was by no means any good, but had learned a lot on my own. The course REALLY fine tuned me. The GS was a perfect choice for me because I wanted to lean towards a sportier feel, but not supersport. The bike is very forgiving. If you do get one before the course, I would practice on clutch control and power walking the bike first. Also familiarizing yourself with the controls and how they work: brakes, clutch, gears, etc. There are a lot of videos you can find on the internet that can help you out as well. A lot of people told me to wait till after the course to buy a bike. I sure am glad I listened to NONE of them!

Nothing to cover it or chain it to in the back. I might ask if I can put up a temporary shed in the back yard, one of those plastic ones.

That may have been me, if it had KY plates. I recently registered on here, and normally just do research on the bike. Is anyone up for a ride sometime soon? I would like to get some good riding in before it gets too cold.

I'm a big fan of Pro Stock on Harrisson Ave for all of my tuning, fluids, and carbs. They are well priced and know what they are talking about. I've witnessed too many uninformed employees at Cycle Specialties, and they're prices are ALWAYS higher.

Thats good advice, I will have to check out Pro Stock.  Do any of you guys know a place around here to buy a leather jacket? The one I have is for summer riding, and I would like to buy a good jacket for this fall, but also something I can wear when I go to class. I want to avoid ordering online, I would like to try it on before I buy it.

I wouldn't get a jacket from any of the shops locally. I would suggest maybe just trying on some stuff then ordering over the internet. Or you can make the journey to Iron Pony in Columbus. It's literally the size of Walmart! I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I first went there. They are having a sale on the Fieldsheer Kinowa Leather jackets for $139.99. I'm prob gonna buy that along with a liner which is sold seperately.

Yeah, what he said.  :thumb:

I've had a positive experience with Pro Stock as well. Even though they are not convenient to me (I'm in Loveland, they are almost in Miamitown on the far west side), they seem to know their way around various makes and models of bikes. The times I've been there, sport bikes of various denominations and vintage were easily in the majority.

nick,
A couple of years ago, I needed to buy a new riding jacket. I didn't want leather, but wanted armour and a zip-in/zip-out liner to use for early spring and late fall riding. I also wanted something rather subdued, something that didn't scream "boy racer". Looking at all the ads in magazines and catalogs helped narrow the selection, but I needed to try the jacket on for size because I'm 6'5" tall with a 36" sleeve length. There was no way I could confidently buy online or through the mail and know how it would look or fit. Soooooooo, on nice days of riding, I started "haunting" all the bike shops around Cincinnati, looking for the perfect jacket. I finally found what I was looking for at the Suzuki store in Montgomery. I bought a black/grey AlpineStars jacket that fits perfectly. The dealer insisted that I should take a quick "demo" ride with the jacket on to verify fit, comfort and warmth. When I got back, they offered me a 10% discount on the price (which was about what the price was for similar jackets that I'd seen advertised in the bike mags), so naturally I bought it. I'm very satisfied with the AlpineStar jacket and I was glad to support a local business as well.
So, start making the rounds of all the bike shops around the city and maybe you'll see something you'll like. As a matter of fact, this PM I was at the same Montgomery Suzuki dealer ordering a part and noticed they had a rack of plain, leather sport bike leather jackets. None were my size, but if you shop around someone might have what you're looking for.

I'm going to start a new post but i wanted to say it here as well...

Sunday June 14 there will be a charity poker run starting at bargo's in centerville, oh next to voss bmw dealer and across from putt putt golf place.

registration starts at 12:00 noon and kick stands up at 1:00pm

known destinations include ace's and eights and the bargo's in Cincinnati, there may be other short stops on the way

fee's will be $15 for bike and $5 for additional passenger

ALL proceeds go toward accident victims hospital/recovery bills, etc. the person that started the charity is an ex-marine and firefighter who was in a bike accident and run over by a car which paralyzed him from the waste down. all fundraisers are paid for out of pocket so that all proceeds can go toward helping other people.

lets show these people how we do it here at gstwin!! if ur close to the area be there, should be a great time!

Looks like a group of bike owners from my husband's work (GSs, Harleys, Ducati and such) are going to Jackass FLatts on Rip Rap Road in Huber Heights on Wed June 10th if the weather works with us.  I'll most likely ride my SV650 since I just got them all out of the garage today for a well deserved cleaning.

Sorry, I never think to check this thread. I'm in Beavercreek also but work in Cinncy, have only been to the QSL night once and friends weren't planning on riding. When I got to their house they "made" me ride their star 650. I'm still debating on this ride a friend just told me about http://www.cincinnaticenterforautism.com/index.php?page=Fundraising (http://www.cincinnaticenterforautism.com/index.php?page=Fundraising). I want to go just for the 3 laps on the track.
Oh, I also work right down the street from aces and eights. Rode a charity ride out of there last year but have heard its been weird down there lately, I believe they still do their bike night on friday nights.
