So I got back from a spirited ride and when it cooled down I checked my oil. And it was bone dry! Nothing on the dipstick.
I changed the oil about 900mi / 3 weeks ago. I checked the oil last week and it was fine.
Now I added a quart and it's right between the marks. So where did a whole quart of oil go?
Were you checking the oil with the bike on the centerstand?
Yea. But I usualy check it both on centerstand and off and there's very little difference.
Air cooled engines "eat" oil. If it's hot outside.
If you rev the engine and do 1,000 miles you can
go through a quart. I had mine since new and it used to freak me out but it's normal. You have to keep a constant eye on the oil.
Checking on the centerstand gives you almost exactly the
same reading as trying to balance it upright on the wheels.
I think Kerry documented it pretty well, with pictures and all.
The new model should be better since it has an oil cooler.
I have a DL650 with an oil cooler and water cooling and it does not use oil. I even stop checking it.
My air-cooled SRX250 didn't eat oil, but our GS motors do. Check it weekly.
Is my GS the only one that doesn't use oil? :icon_razz:
good practice to check it with each fuel up, this way should you need some your already at a place to get it.

If you rev it and push it hard it will eat oil.
If you observe the speed limit and don't go over 6,000 rpm
you should be fine.

Sorry.
Im with Alpha
I thought that the speed limits on the highway were upper limits for cars and lower limits for bikes!
Say it ain't so?
