Title: Headlight weirdness
Post by: Admiral Crunch on February 05, 2006, 02:32:14 AM
I finally rode my bike at night, and something seems to be wrong with my headlight.  Low beam seems fine, but when I flip to high beam, the "middle" of the beam (ie where it's pointing down the road) doesn't get any brighter, but the outer ring of the light brightens way up, especially on the ground right in front of the bike.  Could my bulb be positioned too far forward or back in the lamp assembly?  Upside down maybe?

The bulb I have has what looks like an opaque paint covering one side of the bulb.  Should the opaque part be at the top of the bulb or the bottom?

Just wondering if anybody has seen any similar behavior before.

It sounds like it could be the wrong way up but before altering it check that it is the correct bulb, it should be a 12v 60/55W.

Position the bike, upright, not on stand, about eleven or twelve feet in front of a wall and the main beam bright spot should be about three feet off the ground. This is a "rough guide" test that I use before putting the bike in for out annual MOT tests, you should be able to do it outside in all but full sunshine if you are lucky enough to have any.

To adjust the beam vertically, loosen the obvious bolt on the side, turn the bolt on the main housing, slightly lower and further back and move theĀ  housing up or down. To adjust hoizontally, stand in front of the bike and about four-o-clock on the headlight there is a cross head screw turn this carefully to adjust left and right. This advice is for the unfaired model.

my guess would be that the bulb is upside down,     be sure not to touch the glass as the oil on your hand will make the glass brake when it cools, if you to do just wipe clean with window or other cleaner and install.
