Title: BLING BLING FOR THE GS
Post by: spirit33 on February 15, 2006, 02:25:38 PM
Howdy folks,
I am about to start a business that makes bling for bikes. Basically I will be doing all types of machining.
for instance a nice gs500 logo machined into the rotor cover (right hand side, engine)
the same with the front brake cap.
basically if you can think of it i will do it.
I will do special one offs but of course they will cost more.
<a href="http://img405.imageshack.us/my.php?image=r11xo.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/8312/r11xo.th.png" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
(http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/192/cbroggy8ek.th.png) (http://img127.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cbroggy8ek.png)i know neither of these are for the gs but they are just a rough idea of what i can do.
basically if you can think of it, I can make it. obviously the more elaborate the more it costs.

So basically I am trying to find out what people want on this site.
Heel plates, Chain guards, Brake caps, headlight mounts,

let me know what you all think. :thumb:

Awesome  :thumb:

I am sure there are a lot of people here with some really good ideas. I have none, however :P

But I do like the idea and see a good niche for it.

The GS is a good bike to make parts for since the aftermarket is very slim.

Brake reservoir caps, fork brace. Rear sets would be nice.

Let me know once you get underway & I'll start my list of bling  :thumb:

Rear sets, heel plates.  That's all I want!

if you make rearsets, they should have folding pegs. the woodcraft ones that are avalible are not folding.

yeah i would like to see something for the chain gaurd and footpegs don't know if that counts under rear sets  :icon_confused:

I am always the devil's advocate so here goes ... most of the GSers (me especially) are cheap bastards and don't want to pay $$$ for bling bling.

I would like to have a custom fork brace though.   ;)

How bout custom chain adjusters to replace those cheap ass looking ones that are stcok.

Others:

bar ends
headlight mounts
89 era handle bar mounts
bar end mirror mounts
something to go into the threaded holes left by the old mirrors (cigarette lighter?)

THANKS 500 RIDER !
got some good ideas there. what you said about price is one of my main concerns at the moment. no good making stuff that turns out so expensive that its beyond every ones reach.
Chain adjusters are an awesome idea ! :thumb:

thanks very much for the input everyone.
it really is greatly appreciated.

also with the custom fork brace do you mean one to replace the plate between the fork boots or an independent one.
the latter would defiantlye be more expensive as it would require more complex programming and machining plus the cost for the billet.
but the fork plate is a different story. the could be manufactured for much less, and would provide more support than the crappy standard one.

Basically I want to be able to offer all parts are a realisitic price. :thumb:

I assume everyone means a fork brace that would replace the metal one that mounts on top of the fender.  Srinath used to make these, thicker than stock in various materials for a slightly stiffer front end.

I have seen forkbraces in the past that are quite close looking to a triple clamp. big thick chunky things. But honestly i think these braces are more for the stunting bikes.

you'd probably be better off finding something that everyone wants that's practical...

"bling bling" on a starter bike is just silly. most of the mods here are somewhat practical and i'm sure people here can think of some cool practical stuff for mods you could make.

I do have shock links drawn up. There are a few. either to lower std seating height or raise it. probably about 20mm either way. But with alot of the practicle stuff it will be cheaper to source it in the states.
(for some stuff I will be happy to foward drawings and files so you would be able to have them machined yourselves in the USA   :thumb:)
My main focus is the large capacity sportsbikes but I thought I would offer it to GS500 riders as I hear alot of complaints about not being able to get bits for the GS. And I have seen plently of bling on photos posted on this site.

If someone can obtain the dimensions for the vance and hines (?) ignition advancer and send them to me I will make these as well no worries.

exhaust flanges that work with the F model GS

people are always looking for those things.

Maybe you should speak for yourself. I'm sure there are lots of people who want bling bling parts for the GS in north America. The trick is to not go too over the top. I don't think spiked fork caps or $5000 billet rims would go over to well, but things like chrome crank case covers or lower profile mirrors would have a lot of people opening their wallets.

I will have some 3D drawings ready 2morrow of the brake cap and the fork brace.
I will do with GS500, gsxr500, and suzuki logos just to give a good idea of what can be done.
Thanks for the great ideas everyone !

no such thing as a gsxr500

the one with the fairing is called a gs500f
and the one without it is a gs500e

personally i think it would be cooler if you just put "suzuki" or the the suzuki "S" on them rather than saying "gs500"

closest thing to a GSXR500 that you might could mistake is the GSR500 labeling that the brazilian company(can't remeber the name) uses for logos on it's body kits. Personally I would be more interested in functional good looking parts, and not so much in a logo on a fork brace or such.
The rearsets with foldable pegs would be a good project, especially seeing the diff ones that people pillage from other bikes to make work

What do you mean ? don;t you have the GSX500R in america ?
The one that came with Ohlins suspension, electronic steering dampner and a akropovic exhaust ?
we have them here ia Australia. They are an awesome machine.

nah, just playing. Just cause i live in the Arse end of the world doesn't mean I'm that daft !
yes, I know there is no real bike as the gsxr-500 or the gs500r. but I have seen the big dollar fairings from Brazil(home of the GS), that have the gs500r on them. I figure anyone who spends $700 us for a fairing can afford some bling, and they might actually like it to match the decals on their bike.  :thumb:

i have both the gs500 logo, and the suzuki S.

Oh sorry, I just thought that maybe you didn't realize that the gs500f isn't a gsxr500. My apologies. I'm interested to see what you come up with for GS parts.
One thing I was thinking is an upper triple clamp cover that replaces the stock one. Accept is only like a quarter inch thick (maybe less), and is flat on top with no handle bar mounts. This would be for the people who have aftermarket clip-ons on their bike and want to eliminate those big ugly bar mounts.  It would have to still hold the gauges on, and would also minimize the need to slide the fork tubes up in the triples when using clip-ons. You could put a cool raised or engraved "S" right in the middle too. I know I'd buy one.

I'd definitely like custom heel plates and bar ends

How cheap can you make bar ends?

I was watching the thread and waiting for somebody to mention clip-ons...

If you can make them like the factory used to... somebody will buy them.

how are you planning on making this stuff? lazer cutting it? or CNC machining it?

ps what do you think of my low profile triple clamp cover?

i am just waiting on a response from the machine shop.

clip ons around $100 australian (plus postage and handling) this is with raw finish. Painted or dipped finishes can be quoted on request.

I want to get things cut in batches of ten (cheaper for me and you )
so as i get at least five orders for a part i will get manufactured.

If you are wanting anything P.M. me letting me know what desing you want. I will post prices with pics as soon as i have it.

:thumb:

budget speed demon- A mixture of both processes depending on whats required. with laser cutting you cant get variating depth cuts. its all or nothing. (besides a barely visible etching line) so most detail like the S or the gs 500 will be cnc cut.
I think you triple clamp idea is great. I just need time to pull mine off and measure. I am doing designs for heaps of other bikes at the moment plus school, plus two jobs and this. but hey, I wouldn't want it any other way. If you want to get somewhere you have to drive yourself. Don't ever accept a ride of the sheeple.  :cookoo:
Yea i know, im nutty, but thats part of being an aussie. Plus you have to be f**king nuts to spend 18-20hrrs of everyday infront of a pc.

Sorry people I don't know what i'm saying. I need sleep. :o

Just noticed a few people asking about bar ends. I honestly don't think i could make for a price reasonable for you Americans. By the time you include postage and handling. If you still want them let me know how you want them and I will design, show and let you know a price. But i do think it will be hard to do a good price on these little bits.
