Title: Is it safe to ride bike w/o warming up
Post by: tussey on February 22, 2006, 08:35:06 PM
Is it cool if instead of warming up the bike. I just start it using 1/2 choke and then I just ride off and close the choke, knowing the bike won't be stopping for another 10-15 minutes? Will that starve the engine?

It might be 'safe', it might be "cool", but it's not a good idea to do it regularily.  Our engines need at least 60 seconds of warm-up to get the pistons and rings to seal properly.  Premature wear of cylinder walls and rings is what happens when the metal is put under a load of stress when cold.  Really, you only burn up a lot more gas and oil when you do this, because the oil and the gas have to 'sacrifice' themselves to get the proper seals of the rings between the cylinders and pistons.  It wont starve the engine, but it's really not good for the parts, and they'll wear out sooner (pistons, rings, cylinders).

Yeah, usually what I do when I start my up is, I start it up, then put my helmet on and gloves on and by the time I am done, the bike should be ready to start moving. It is better to warm the bike under a load, but be gentle on it for at least a good 5 minutes.

I start the bike before I put on my gear.  less waiting.

This is one of the things that I (as a noob) have found surprising. Whatever the virtues of a bike, it sure doesn't seem to be the fastest way out of a driveway or parking lot.

True dat!

Taking the car:

1. Grab the keys
2. Go!

The "junk" part of this post did not get the recognition it derserved, being overshadowed by longer, more thought out posts. But WELL DONE, SIR.

Be careful. The bike is more likely to stall, and toss you at low speeds when cold. Especially in a gravel driveway.

Don't ask how I know this. :icon_rolleyes:

You know all those scenes in movies where the hero finds a convenient parked motorcycle and comes blazing out of a barn door or or picture window or somesuch, upsetting conveniently-placed applecarts and villains on the way? Forget it.

From my experience so far, you'd be much faster on foot for the first half-mile or so. After that, the bike might catch up...

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!
I pull a James Bond EVERY TIME I get on my bike! First I jump though, (and break) the glass sliding door. then I run over to my bike, do a flying front flip and land perfectly on the saddle, twist the throttle and take off (because the bikes already conveniently running) and do a wheelie down the street to catch to fleeing villain. Sometimes when the kids have their sk8boarding ramps out on the street, I hit one doing 200 km/hr and fly high over on looking kids and several parked cars before landing smoothly and continuing the chase. For some reason I never manage to catch who I'm chasing..... :dunno_white:

Don't forget that after all that you get caught from behind by an SUV. If anyone has ever seen Mission Impossible 2, you know what I'm talking about. I saw the movie with my dad, and when we walked out of the theatre the first thing we both did was yell about how we could take everything else with a grain of salt, but that just crossed a line.
