Rear brake squeels when I brake. Should I get new brake pad? Can I do the install my self or should I drop it off at the shop?
p.s. where can I purchase new brake pads? AutoZone, Advanced auto parts etc
mine squeal to so i just use the front.
it is possible that you dont have an pad left, but it could also be possible that you have a pad that is dry and squeaky on the back side. it vibrates when you apply the brake and will squeak. Look at your pad and see if it is worn, if it isnt then remove it and put some type of de-squeak junk on the back. I use 1207b its a suzuki marine sealant, just alittle layer will do it, reinstall and let dry and now now more squeak.
oh ya also if you pad is worn and needs replacing i dont think auto zone can replace it. go to your dealer or order off the net, dealers are usually the same price and most of the time next day shipping.
Brake harder!
Squealing is a sign of a lack of lubrication. You should grease your rotors and pads thoroughly.
Seriously though, do what 94 said. The anti-squeal goop often helps, but don't get it on your clothes.
Where do I get some?
You can get both grease and anti-squeal goop at just about any auto parts store.
had the same problem when i got my bike with only 1700 miles on it, looked as if the guy befor me had only used them and not the front. when i replaced them i used white grease on the sliders so they could move freely. they still did it for like a 100 miles then stoped and never did it again, i guess they needs to be broken in like in a car.
my rear brake still squeals like a pig (since day 1 when I bought the bike), but one of these days I will take it back for warranty.
braking harder did not help.
I've used a lot of different anti-squeal products over the years, and this is the product I prefer for stopping brake squeal due to vibration:

MANY autoparts stores carry it; NAPA, Pepboys, AutoBarn... CRC Disc Brake Quiet is an excellent product. The 4 OZ. bottle is resealable, and will last for years. You can use it on just about any disc brake pads (car, truck, motorcycle)... I use it every time I replace ANY pads, and highly recommend it. Just apply it to the BACK of the brake pad, where it will act as a damper for any noise-producing pad vibration. Of course, you could still get a squeal from greasy / contaminated brake pads, or a warped rotor, but you'd most likely feel a "pulsing" sensation when you applied the brake with a warped rotor, and the brakes wouldn't work too well if they had grease on them. Since you didn't mention those symptoms, my guess is that the noise is caused by the brake pad vibrating during braking, and the CRC Red Disc Brake Quiet should put a stop to the noise.
Be careful not to get any of it on the brake pads or rotor; I suspect it is red so you can see it easily. You'd know right away if you'd comtaminated any surfaces with it. Also, don't get it on your clothes... just another reason to wear coveralls or old clothes when you're wrenching... If you DO contaminate the pads or rotor with it, you can clean the surface with an actual brake cleaning product; do NOT use carb cleaner, electrical parts cleaners, or any other product not specifically designed for use on brakes.
Cal Amari is right....most brake squeal is from vibratation and the most likely suspect is dirt or dust near the dust seals.
You can try an anti squeal on the back of the pads but it's by no means a sure thing.

FWIW, the anti-squeal stuff also comes in a spray, which I used for years "back when". Don't remember the brand (maybe Permatex?), but it was blue. I found it more convenient- easier and faster to get a thin, even layer.
No, there is no guarantee that there's not something else wrong, but it's also true that some brakes squeal sometimes, and some brakes squeal all the time, for no evident reason. You can disassemble, clean and check to your heart's content, and they'll still squeal. Very irritating. The goop does take care of those cases.
Yea so I got some Anti-Squeal stuff from AutoZone. It said not to spray it on the rotor but only the pads. Whatever. I sprayed a bit on the rotor, and slowoly rolled the bike with slight pressure on the rear wheel to spread the blue goop across the rotor. Now no more squeal :thumb:

You might want to follow the directions. You also might want to go riding somewhere safe and ride the rear brake a bit to burn that crap off so you don't kill yourself trying to stop in an emergency. I don't think you'll be able to wipe it off once it's cured.
By the way, that whole greasing down the rotor and brake pad comment was a joke. I'm worried you might be taking me seriously....

My '04 has been doing this for over a year, it is intermittant but the break still works fine. Kind of embarrasing when you're cruising with friends though.
Thanks for the information on the goop stuff, I'll surely go pick some up this weekend.

I got the impression that he used something like this (http://www.k2distributing.com/pages/automotive-specials.php), not the anti-squeal that goes on the back of the pads. Can you confirm this tussey?

I doubt it since it said not to get it on the rotors.

Oh my god, we killed tussey! We're bastards!
Mine started squealing after I replaced the pads. I'm too lazy to take them back off for some rehab.
Just wondering if gs breaks have a wear pin like some cars do. In that case, when breaks are worn the pin will contact the rotor and make a squeaking sounds. Since I haven't seen it mentioned, however, it's prob. not true for breaks on gs.
Well my 05 has had a squealing rear brake right from the day I collected it, and yesterday, I met up with another 05 owner, and guess what, his did exactly the same thing. Quite annoying, but I might do something about it when I get back from Phillip Island (the Aussie Superbikes is on next weekend :thumb:
