I just added this to my stable. Here (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/DSCF0008.jpg) she is with my yellow 99' GS500E
I just picked her up Saturday morning (Thanks Stephen!!) from a GSTWINer.
This (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/DSCF0010.jpg) damage was her attempt to tackle an Impala, she actually came out pretty well, seeing as how he said he was going 50mph.
The CAGER impala ran a stop and he stuck the front wheel in its rear wheel well.
The damage is not too bad. mostly the front wheel and forks. All the electronics survived except the front turn signals. (rear signals are also MIA - thanks Stephen ;) :flipoff:) The header was bent and dented and the frame was dented. ( the title is clean, though no salvage)
The headlight will need a bit of superglue but nothing cosmetic. The clutch handle is shot and so is the front wheel. And some damage on the brake handle assy.
My main concern was the ignition sensor. It was ripped clean off damaging the crankshaft (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/DSCF0012.jpg) as it went. Here (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/DSCF0029.jpg) is a closeup of the crank. Here (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/DSCF0019.jpg) is what my undamaged 99' looks like for comparison. So I set out to make sure she would run before I tried to buy new front forks.
The bike was well maintained and very clean. the engine oil is still clear (not black) and she goes into gear smoothly. no sign of major rust anywhere.
definitely kept under somekind of cover. The prev owner said he had her parked for a year but drained the carb bowls. SO I was a bit hopeful she would not be gummed up in the carbs. I was in for a pleasent surprise.
I stole the parts off (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/DSCF0017.jpg) of my 99' and Jerryrigged (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/DSCF0030.jpg) it onto the 01' - being sure to line up the hole with the slot-(you'll know if you know) I will have to figure out how to replace the little die that sticks out, later.
After a bit of tinkering. (bypassing clutch safety switch, adjusting idle) she started like she was waiting to run and purred like a kitten. I left her running for two hours and she did'nt so much as hiccup. SHe runs better and smoother than my 99'
check out this video (http://media.putfile.com/she-purrs)
SHe even sounds better than my 99' with a stock can.
I will keep posting my progress on this bike for those who are interested.
Also I need parts, let me know if you know of any available. forks, ignition sensor, case covers...ect.
Peace :thumb:
Wow, that would be nice to have a running bike to try parts from. When a car sidesiped me, my rightside looked almost excactly the same, but I didn't have the fork damage. Wish I had case guards on there when that happened... :icon_rolleyes: I know I was worried that the crankshaft was bent, but fortunately with the ignition parts breaking off it saved the crank. I found all the parts I needed on ebay for a little over $100. They didn't look the prettiest but with some tlc and some spraypaint it looks pretty good now. And now I've got case gaurds to protect it :icon_lol:
hmm...caseguards. good call.
I got a complete front end just lying around in my garage. I'll shoot you a PM. Get that beauty back up and running!
Glad you got her running man, She was always a sweet running bike... I took good care of that motor (and bike till it got smashed)... I hated to see her go, but I spent the rest of the weekend riding my new bike :thumb:
Quote from: 3imo on February 27, 2006, 10:34:47 AMI left her running for two hours and she did'nt so much as hiccup.
Did you have a fan or anything on it? I'm very suprised it wouldn't overheat idling for that long with no air movement.
Actually I was counting on it. I wanted to get her all hot and bothered. any weak seals would have busted after a year of sitting and two hours idling.
she didn't even batt an eye.
--------------
I don't believe in your logic though (no offense, of course) although this motor is air cooled I would be very upset if an engineer would design such a weak motor that it could not Idle at recommended speed(1200rpm) for an extended period of time.
My thinking is that a cold engine is bad for the engine. the oil is thick and slow moving. A warm engine running at recommended idle speed would be in heaven. working as designed.
Let me tell you, engines can take alot of abuse. In countries where motorcycles are used daily, the average lifespan of a motor is 190K miles. Not like here in the U.S. where we use them for recreation every now and then, with minimal maintenance.
The average lifespan of a motorcycle in the US is more like 4k (don't quote me) simply because we park the bikes when the weather sucks and the engines are not operating as designed. We don't mantain them properly because we don't rely on them. (of course some cherish and mantain their bikes properly)
Sure running/Idleing the motor with a "fan" a respectable opinion, its still just an opinion. I bet if we could run a test on how long a bike would last with the engine (edit- this air cooled engine) ideling the final result will be a catastrophic KATHUNK from the engine.....
when the gas runs out. :thumb:
while the engine wont have a catastrophic failure from idleing without moveing air, it can still overheat and hurt the head and cyl's. you can start and run and even drive an engine with a blown headgasket, doesnt mean it will run right or wont continue to distroy itself. now granted it doesnt take MUCH moveing air to keep it from going critical but it takes some, even a 2mph breeze could suffice at idle aslong as oil is in good shape and proper level.
I will post this as a new thread and get other opinions.
I wanted this thread for my 01' project.
I don't see this dying. I'd like to see what others say.
THat aside. I added another thoroughbred to my stable.
this time is a 95'. completely dissasembled, but in better shape than I hoped.
I bought her from another GSTWINER - SNAP,(sorry TJ) who BTW may have a sweet 92' for sale soon. be on the look out
I got home with her about 9pm.
Last night I immediatly strapped the front forks on the 01' - I just couldn't wait.
by 10:30 I had a rolling bike. I took the ignition stuff off the 95' engine and jerry rigged the 01'
I also put the stock 95' muffler on her too. (lotta rust)
by 11pm I was running up and down the street.
That 01' engine is definitely better and smoother than my 99'.
I was extremely worried about the frame being to bent, but she rides straight as an arrow and thats with a flat front tire.
I was able to ride straight with no hands!!!!
now I have another project. the 95' hahahahahahahahahh
I'm all giddy about it . I will post pics for those interested. :thumb:
here she is chopped and stuffed in my wagon (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/CIMG4044.jpg)
here is a before pic (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG4024.jpg) she looks like a chopper!!
I had to do this to move her around.
here she is with just enough to get her going (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/1d653083.jpg) no lights, front brake, just what is necessary to get her goig.
I knew I couldn't sleep worring about the frame being shot.
THe frame is bent but it rides straight!!
Here is a video of the 01' in action (http://media.putfile.com/01-gs500-rides-again)
and another (http://media.putfile.com/01-gs500-rides-again2)
and the end (http://media.putfile.com/01-gs500-rides-again3)
notice**** NO hands!!!! she runs straight as an arrow.

So tonight I will remove the forks and clean them up as best I can. then put all the parts together.
The PO of the 95' said she needs new fork seals, so I'll check them out as well. I also need to try an get the ingnition sensor cover on. I might be able to temporarily. until I can get a new case cover. If not I'll ride her like she is.
If all goes well tonight, I'm gonna put my 99' tags on her and see how she performs on the highway. If you don't here from me tomorrow....well you know. :icon_rolleyes:

So glad to see you bringing her back to rise up through the ashes!!!!! :thumb:
Great Idea PANDY!! you are a goddess.
I will name her PHOENIX and paint her red and yellow. :thumb:
the almost final product (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG4060.jpg)
that red fender was driving me nuckin futs!!
both my babies (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG4066.jpg)
here is the latest (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG4065.jpg) this is how she lloks now. she is only missing the front fender and the ignition sensor cover(I will have to replace the entire crankcase cover to repair)
I sanded the fender, primered and painted silver. not to shabby. will post later.
Lookin' sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better! :thumb:
We who have more than one GS should have our own club...or extra stars...or something...we're just so.... *speeeeeeeeeeeeeeecial* :icon_lol:
how bout we start a nonprofit organization. to provide a GS500 to everyone.
(except those who's "stock" has gone up to high, or are too scare to grab a wrench and see what elbow grease can do.)
~I can be the guy who steals :icon_twisted: all the money and goes off to some foreign country.~
(mhh.. did I type that outloud?) - ~ :o doh~
Ha, nice pics of my ex-95 in your wagon. Kinda makes me wish I had the $$ to keep it. Hope she does the job you needed. Also gettin ready to post that 92' you saw. :o Doctor bills are a pain in the butt. Keep me posted on the 95 project, would be nice to see what you were telling me about when you were down here.
TJ
THanks again for the bike. Here is my plan for her.
not a replica but very similar. especially the rearend.
comming soon to a hwy near you.

update....
the decision was made to use the 95' frame to replace the dented 01' frame. I am in the process of sandblasting/chemical striping the paint and rust off the frame.
heres a pic or two..

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0074.jpg

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0079.jpg
not really a how-to, but one piece of advise. if you sandblast at home with a small tank like mine, strip the paint chemically first and sandblast the rust only. it will save you time and keep the compressor from overheating.
more pics to come for those interested. :thumb:

this is still my plan for the 01'frame since it still rides straight.
can't wait.
I've been wondering when you would update this thread; I like your work, as I'm sure many others do, and you can bet I'll be stealing several of your ideas when I find a suitable project bike... 8)
Thanks
I was beginning to think you all thought I was being egotistical. I figure someone might gain something from my feable attempts.

Oh man, please tell me those are the bellypans you are working on making a reality. I would buy one so fast my wife would divorce me.

ninja edit - I watched that one video 3 times now and your son is cracking me up. "Go, go, go! you win!" My little man is 7 so it hits a soft spot for me
I really thought about buying that bike. I'm glad to see it found a good home. :icon_razz:

Yup. I have drawn up plans for this bellypan. my biggest issue is heat. with the stock exhaust, I have to keep the fiberglass a good inch or two away and IMO it takes away from the look of it. I have a bunch of aluminium sheet metal I have been tooling with to get a heat barrier designed, I can rivet to the fiberglss....but I am swamped with projects and need to concentrate on getting this bike done, so I can get My pickup's new engine installed.
then I can start work on the street fighter. So you won't see any results for a good 3-4 months.
but I'll get craking on your divorce ASAP!! :thumb:
btw- thats my friends 3 yr old in the clip. he's a trip. my son is 1.5 yrs old.
I been busy this weekend. :thumb:
I know others have converted their older GS's to take the newer fairings. Here are pics of my conversion.
I removed the fairing mounts off the 01' and transfered them to the 95' frame.
I started with Removing the forward fairing mounts (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0105.jpg) I used a grinder to cut the weld as best I could, then hit it with a flattip screwdriver and hammer to break it off.
Then I made a template (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0109.jpg) to ensure i had the right location (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0108.jpg) on the 95' frame
I then welded (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0115.jpg) it on. the other side too, being sure to check my lines (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0116.jpg) over and over.
I welded these mounts first because I noticed the stock 01's fairings are a bit lower (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0119.jpg) than I liked. I wanted to snug the fairings to the seat more.
So, I removed the rubber grommet fairing mounts off the 01'. the front (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0106.jpg) and rear (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0104.jpg)
I don't have a pic of this, but at this point I mounted the gas tank, fairing and seat. notice I have not welded anything else to the frame. I put the rubber grommet mounts on the fairing. and marked where they fell on the frame in relation to the location I wanted the fairing to be.
Here is the "stock" location (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0120.jpg) and this is what I wanted (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0118.jpg)
I then proceeded to weld the grommet mounts where I wanted them. once those were in place I Removed the rear fairing mount (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0097.jpg) here is a comparison of the two rear (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0094.jpg) mounts
I then removed these towers (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0099.jpg), the seat has a rubber boot that sits on this tower. Here is a comparison of the two (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0096.jpg)
I was being extra careful to check and recheck the fit. I musta mounted and dismounted the fairing and seat 100 times.
I then welded the rear fairing mounts and these towers in. Here is the finished product (http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/?action=view¤t=DSCF0126.jpg), before clean up sanding and primer.
I left on a road trip to Vortex springs/Panama city Beach with fellow GSTWINNER Thatguy1025, before I could sand/primer the frame. I left him at Vortex springs with his freinds and proceeded solo to Panama city Beach. (fell asleep on the beach)
oh yeah, I also removed the fuel selector mount (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0130.jpg) and welded it to the frame (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0131.jpg)
and I removed the old grommet mounts (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0127.jpg) here's another pic (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0128.jpg) of it.
Here is tha finished frame (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0133.jpg) after a night of sanding and primer.
This is what the 01' (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0137.jpg) is left with.
It's the base for my future streetfighter.
Here is the finished frame (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/DSCF0145.jpg) before clearcoat.
Yesterday, I laid four layers of clearcoat on the frame, and did some work on the swing arm off the 01'. I painted and clearcoated the swingarm.
no pics cause the cam wasn't charging right.
I will have pics of the swing arm mounted today. Last night as paint was drying I dissasembled the rear of the 01' and cleaned every piece up nice, painting as necessary.
Man those silver rims are awesome. I need a front one though. :dunno_white: ebay maybe. unless someone here has one.
I will update tomorrow.

then I will clean and mount the center stand under the new frame.
if I get a chance I will mount the front end too.

Thanks CAL.
I uploaded pics from last night, before I went to work this morning and now I don't see them in photobucket.
oh well, Ill post them tomorrow.
I cleaned up the engine real nice. using a tooth brush, mild engine degreaser and soapy water.
I plugged the intake and exhast with rags and rinsed it with a hose.
afterwards I got a buddy to help me mount the engine.
Pics to come.
my F**ing camers isn't working. so no pics.
The engine is mounted, all the bits and pieces have finally come together cleaned and painted. the gaskets havent come in, but I'm just gonna torque the covers on and see if she turns over.
I used threadlock on damn near everything. She looks damn good, ...all ....naked ....staring at me... like that...uh..oh yeah, all she needs now is crankcase gaskets, new fork seals and paint.
I am gonna paint the rims, fairings and tank (after dent removal) yellow. I couldn't decide on a color and wanted something bright so I asked the neighborhood kids, and yellow it is.
I was thinking orange accents.. any suggestions would be appreciated. I am gonna run down a vinyl shop and see about GS500 stickers.
I'll post pics when I can.
So the tank is still needs sanding and paint. I used bondo on the flat spots, that I couldn't get out.
thunder beach at panama city is tomorrow so I just have to ride her out there.
last night, since the tank isn't done I mounted my 99' tank to the bike. it is a different tank but it fits rather well. I took pics but still having issues with the cam.
I'm gonna post it just so we can see what a 99' tank looks like with a 01' fairing. Someone might like it.
Anyway, I prepped and sprayed the fairings and mounted them to the bike. I havent color sanded and clearcoated yet. I'll do that next week.
So the bike is mechanically ready to rock. She started up just fine and I took her for a ride. (2:30AM this morning) I had lost track of time.
I thought it was midnight.
So of course she sputters and dies a block or two from home. :o :o :o :o I was freaking out. ya know?
what did I do wrong, maybe I didn't connect something right, maybe this maybe that......
Dumbass....I had no gas
with some sloshing of the tank I get her home and fill her up. then takeoff. 5 miles from home @ 2:30am, I realize.......
Dumbass... I forgot to put on the tag :o :o and I'm the only vehicle on the street :o what a dumbass.
oh well I got home no problem. realized the time and locked up the garage.
at least I have a bike for thunder beach!!!! eventhough shes an ugly frankenstein. :icon_confused:

There, now you can't feel too bad, as you're not the only idiot that's done it!
How'd you get the engine so clean?
And is there a good solvent for cleaning grime out of the chain?
engine degreaser, dishsoap, a tooth brush and gobs of patience. The engine pics above are not even the final look, of the engine. It actually came out a lot nicer.
but I have to say I was working with a relatively new engine that was well care for before I bought it.
3imo how is the project racer goign?
The project street fighter is still in pieces in the cab of my pick up.
I am still trying too sell the house and my new job has me out of town alot, and a week at a time. in fact at this moment I am in Cape Cod, Massachessetts. Otis National Guard Airbase actually.
Before I can get to the bike I have to drop a new V8 and tranny in my truck.
I probably won't have anything to show my GSTWIN family for another few months.
On a side note, The object of this thread is now my daily driver. I still haven't found time to do the finising touches on the paint job. It is just rattle canned yellow without a clear coat.
have a good time on the Cape. I did my MSF course at Otis.
I am tryin but I hate tourist towns. and the traffic is killer.
weather is perfect though, and the beaches are beautiful.

HAHA has it been that long? I guess it is time for an update.
This weekend I decided to begin work on my project streetfighter. Before I start welding the new rear end, I had to check out that engine. The PO said the engine had a knock. So I just slapped the swing arm and wheels to the frame, after minimal cleaning.
After one evening of cleaning and searching for nuts, bolts and washers.....
HERE (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG5008.jpg) is what I have to work with. HERE (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG5009.jpg) is another pic
I bought this bike from SNAP see pic (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/95%20GS500/CIMG4044.jpg) earlier this year.
The frame came from the wrecked bike I bought from Stephen072774
The front forks came courtesy of ALPHAFIRE_X5.
The front rim (GSXR ??) came from JOHNEL as well as a slew of spare parts, that have turned out to be a lifesaver. All for the cost of freight. :thumb:
I just wanted to point this out and thank the GSTWIN community for all your help.
HERE (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG5011.jpg) is a pic of the motor just about to be slapped in. Notice my handy dandy Motor carrier. (walmart skateboard $7)
How do I get it into this (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG5012.jpg) hole by my self?????
With a 2 ton car jack (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG5015.jpg) of course. ;)
I did a quick teardown/cleaning of the carbs and slapped them in. After wrestling with the wiring harness and dropping in a battery I had this to smile about (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG5024.jpg). Notice my temporary gas tank (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/eimoytiana/01%20GS500E/CIMG5038.jpg). (eat your heart out Sledge :flipoff: )
After a few cranks to get some fuel in the carb floats, She started right up and HOLYJEBUS :o ??? That knock is loud!!!!!!!!
So I crack open my Handy Dandy Clymers book and tear into the valve cover. According to my feeler guage the vlave shim clearances are all off.
Hopefully that is the source of the knocking. I think I traced it to the left hand side exhaust valve. I havent gotten around to checking its valve shim clearance, though don't ask me why. Might have been dinner or some other interruption.
The tolerance is within .03mm and .08mm
The left hand valve shim (intake) is tighter than .03 mm.
The right hand (intake) is also tighter than .03 mm.
The right hand (exhaust) is looser than .08 mm.
I will check the last one later. But hopefully this is the source of my knock. If so, I should have her good to go soon.
Oh, yeah I forgot to mention, She bangs only on the right cylinder. I tried switching out the coil to no avail. I have a weak spark from the plug, but no bang.
I have to search the threads to see if I can get an answer for this one. :dunno_white:

Cool 3imo, looks good. I recognise the frame, is that my old tank and plastics in yellow on the other bike? That looks great man, I always told my wife my old bike would look good in yellow... :thumb: Glad to see someone that enjoys it rather than it be neglected and left to rust
Yeah thats her. I never did post pics. The plastics still need some TLC and clearcoat.
I have put more than 4000miles on her since the rebuild. :thumb:
she has never given me a headache. You can't even tell the tank was dented. Everything on that bike came from your bike. I'll post some pics later.

3imo you are one bad mo-frackey. You have a pretty sweet shaded area to work under, I envy it.
Good luck with the new engine. :thumb: :thumb:
very impressive, definitely gonna follow this thread and see the finish product.
I have a similiar project, to rebuild my '89 gs that's been sitting for the past 3 years after i seized the engine while riding on the highway, didn't realize i burn off so much oil. Brought a donor engine off a '92 gs500e, but never got around to doing it. That's probably been idle for almost 3 years too. Think this spring/summer will be the time to get it running again. Thanks for the inspirational pics and excellent posting. :thumb:
Nice work! I'll be interested in seeing photos of the finished project.
Here's a few photos of mine before & after - I got it on ebay for $1000.00. It had been sitting in a garage for 3 years and was scuffed up and painted PURPLE. After a good cleaning and the usual maintence it ran fine. I painted it Ducati yellow and I still have to add the black racing stripes.
I have a nice workshop in my basement which is attached to my garage so I can simply wheel any bike in and start working on it. Really nice in the winter!

Nice work! Couldn't tell it sat for 3 years, what else are gonna do to it?
if you don't mind me asking, and if you have the time to type it out, what did you have to do to get it running again? What did you use to sand, prep, and paint the bike? rattle can paint? If you could post any DIY instructions that would be a great help. :thumb:
I took off all the pieces and took it to Maaco....the whole gig was $275.00. They did an OK job but it beat doing it myself. I've done a couple of bikes and the painting is the easy part - all the prep work and post painting work is a chore.
