Where is the stock horn mounting location? And how is it mounted? My bike came with this horn: :o :o :o
(http://www.geocities.com/kingsfan3344/gs500e4.jpg)
And i am trying desperately to change that. i got an aftermarket 130db horn that is more like the stock horn in size and shape, and would like to put it where it's supposed to go. The clymer and the owner's manual weren't much help. i've also foraged around old posts to find pictures of bikes that might shed some light on the subject...but haven't found anything. An explanation would work...a pic would be amazing.
Thanks in advance!
Right below and behind the steering tube.
Thanks for the answer GeeP. Could you be a little more specific? Is there a threaded hole? Or is it a bolt with a nut?
There are three holes about 1/4" in diameter drilled in the gusset just below the steering tube. The two on the left (as you sit on the bike) are for the L-shaped horn bracket. (If you still have it)
The hole on the right is for a clip for a wiring harness.
let me know if you wish to get that current horn a new home. mine died.
someone please post a pic for chrissake...

Hi there,
I'm curious... why are you removing the loud horn? OK, maybe the mounting place isn't gorgeous, but isn't so loud that you'd want to keep it there?
Have you looked for a place to remount it so it is more hidden?
Yours,
Todd
Thanks RVertigo...those pics do help.
And Todd, to answer your question...i guess i mentioned it in another horn thread (where i discovered another GStwinner used to own my bike and is the one who put that horn on)...this horn is big, ugly and doesn't work any more. It apparently worked at some time, but now it seems like its not getting enough juice. It just clicks and vibrates. And the one i got now is louder than my car horn. i don't feel safe in LA traffic without a loud horn.

btw Todd, I did get the FIAMM HIGH TONE C PT # 40310 from Advance Auto Parts and it works great!! Thanks to your info. It's so much louder than stock and I feel safer now. The mounting adaptor (metal plate) that came with was bit too long for the wires to reach so I used the stock one. It was so easy to install once the feft fairing from my 05' F was off. Despite my worries, there was plenty of room for the bigger horn inside the fairing. I recommend this to anyone still using the stock horn.
Cost around $13USD and took 15 minutes to install including taking the fairing off. :thumb:
Hi Sam et al,
I'm glad the horns worked out for both of you.
I am a major advocate of LOUD horns on motorcycles.
Best wishes,
Todd
