I just picked up my new GS!
Some first impressions and observations:
- The bike sounds a lot better than a lot of the sound clips around the internet make it out to sound. It doesn't sound too shabby with the stock exhuast at all
- The bike is so light weight, so much so that my mom sat on it and said "hey, i could ride this!"
- The manual is thin. I was hoping for something more informative.
- The manual (canadian GS500F) recommends 91 octane. There is no mention of RON or MON octane standards.. just says "91 octane"
- The bike is very simple and unintimidating from a mechanical perspective.
- A ton of people who are into motorcycling have either heard of or ridden these bikes. Everyone seems to have some GS500 stories of their own.
- At first i thought i wouldn't buy a tank protector, but sitting on the bike its beginning to seem like a good idea. (is this recommended?)
Thanks for everyone's help here at GStwin, much appreciated. I like my new bike.
Congradulations!
Use the lowest octane available, it's almost like advancing your timing.

You're welcome! (even though I might have had nothing to do with it) :thumb:
Welcome! Where in Canuckistan are you located? I'm out west in the prairies, and currently planning some long range camping action on the GS.
hey there!
Im in Central Ontario and i use 87 octane...Bike runs great on it no need for pricy 91 or 94.
Hey Grainbelt...i see you're from Saskatoon. I lived there for 3 years while in college...from Regina originally. Saskatoon is a nice city, well it beats Regina IMO.....but its too damn cold there in SK for my liking, I had to get out of there.
