Just bought me a 96 GS500, nice bike runs really, and suprised me. One thing that bothers me is the front blinkers have been removed, and it bugs me. I was wondering what the law was on it. Another thing, is the damn idle, I just cannot seem to get it right, I have tried to adjust it a few times to get it where I want it (not dying when I stop, or not sitting at 3grand at a stop light) I almost think the thing is possessed, or that its moving itself from the vibrations. Anyways, I just got it, probably going to knit pick it until I find every single thing that bugs me.
The blinker laws depend on where you are located, but I believe that you have to have blinkers in the US.
definitely need blinkers. if your state has yearly inspections it wont pass. if not, like in CA, you're just biding your time until you get pulled over. best to have them for safety anyway.
the idle is probably because you are adjusting it at different times (engine is warmed up different temps). The high idle happens when the engine is warm and is caused by the too-lean jetting inside the carburetors to pass emissions regulations in the US.
You can rejet (see the FAQ section) or you can play around with it until you have it set so its not too high when idleing warm and wont stall out when cold-although this is why these bikes are considered 'cold blooded'. They take long time to warm up (like 5-10 minutes) if you dont rejet. I had mine for 16 months and never did it so you CAN live with it.
i wonder...i live in VA and it says that turn signals are not required...
does that mean i dont have to use my signals to make turn/lane changes or since i have them on i have to use them?
just curious guys...i always use my blinker, my only problem is forgetting to cancel them out :cookoo:

Thanks fellas, Oklahoma only requires them on 2005 models and newer, so I am in the clear there, But I will still want to get them anyways, I do not want someone to use them as a excuse to run me over. I had a woman almost run me over on the day I bought it, she was comming off the turnpike and almost ignored a stop sign, I was not taking any chances and came to a complete stop when she started to pull out. I was adjusting the idle when the bike was warm, at first I thought my throttle was sticking, but the bike had been sitting a while, the person I bought it from had went to basic training and his AIT, he said it had been setting from around july. Idle should be set to 1200-1300rpm's after a good long 15-minute ride. You will need to use the throttle to keep the rpm's up, when it's cold, after that. If it still gives you problems, the fact that it has been sitting since July, you may need to clean the carburetors. Alriight, sounds good. Now, next question, I want to store it in my garage, but I have a pitbull that has chewed everything up I attempt to store in there, I was thinking tesla coils or a self defense mechanism for the bike, he has chewed many things up, that i have had to fix, like for example, the lawn mower pull cord...which took me hours to get that coil back in. If he chewed the seat off, i would have a new black fur seat. I am sure everyone would get a laugh out of my next post being, new bike, need a new seat or something along them lines. Again thanks for all the tips. I really liked the way the GS500 looked with the full fairing, I have been wondering if I should start saving up, and enhance my bike with one, some day. Bike cover and some smelly stuff that keeps dogs away. I think Rema1000 has posted something about that. I go search.
My chow chow had a chewing problem. I used bitter lemon spray and coated the furniture. It worked. Got it from Pet Smart.
Yes, I was thinking of getting a cover, but smelly stuff doesnt seem to effect this dog. I was thinking a shock collar and a sensor on the bike, that if he gets within 10 feet of it, well, zap. (kidding)
Well, I hope you'll do SOMETHING; dogs and motorcycles don't mix well. The pitbull will chew out of boredom or frustration; maybe you should give him an old tractor tire as a chew-toy...
Be careful with giving him a tire as a toy. Just as he can't differentiate between the moldy old running shoe you give him to chew on abd the the pair of leather dress shoes he will eventually chew up, he doesn't know a trashed tire from the one you were going to use to ride to work on.
