Title: crazy insurance
Post by: badguy on March 08, 2006, 09:36:45 PM
Not sure if this is in the right section, but...

I'm looking to get insurance as soon as possible so that I can start riding my new bike this weekend.  (I've been looking at it for two weeks without being able to ride and it's supposed to be in the 70s this weekend...I can't wait).

Anyway, this is my first bike, I'm in southern Maryland (DC suburbs) and I'm not 25 yet.  I got a quote from Foremost Insurance for $75/yr.  This is for liability only, but not even the minimums.

Yeah, that's right, seventy five dollars per year...

I thought this sounded too good to be true, but apparently Foremost is run/owned/underwritten (not sure which) by Farmer's Insurance, which I've heard good things about.  Apparently my clean driving record and good credit qualify me for this ridiculously low premium.  My next lowest premium is with Progressive at $150/yr.  State Farm - who I have my car insured with - quoted me a little over $400/yr, so I'm trying to figure out how reasonable this is.

My question is:  does anyone else have any experience with this company?  Any good or bad experiences or stories?  This is my first time dealing with motorcycle insurance and I don't have anything to base this on, but if others here have a bad feeling about this, I might just go for Progressive since they're pretty reputable.

I've never heard of any insurance being that low. what would happen if you had bought a 250 or somthing? that sounds like a great deal!

I'm 25, married, clean record.  Progressive quoted me $76/yr. for liability only (at the lowest coverage amounts they offer).  Considering this I would say your quote is probably not a mistake.  I didn't buy the policy yet b/c I'm not sure what is the lowest legal amount of liability coverage I'm required to carry.

Thanks for the stats everyone :)  I can't pass this up, especially since I'm about to go broke buying gear.

Glad I don't need full coverage, I'd be paying about the same as afplayboy18...hope it comes down for ya soon.

And on the other end of the spectrum...  I called Progressive to get a quote on a Triumph Daytona 675.  I am 30, perfect driving record.  One year of full coverage for the bagain basement price of $9000.00.  Farmers, full coverage with $200 deductible, $740.....

OK, so I just called back to get the policy, and it turns out they had me down as being born in 73, instead of 83... :dunno_white:
Fixing that put it up to $151/yr, which still isn't as bad as I was expecting.  Man, insurance will be nice when I turn 25...

Thanks for the input folks, I'll let you know what the first ride is like tomorrow or Saturday  :icon_mrgreen:

I have got to get that, but I don't know if they'll insure a 12 year old bike, being that I have to get full coverage to obtain that.

I'm currently payin' $75/yr for liability only with Progressive, 38, ridin' 19yrs, clean record, immaculate credit.

I pay 190 a year for full coverage with low deductables on a 2005. I'm 26 and didn't even have the msf or a license when I got insured. Good credit is important for sure.

I called the dealer to ask if I needed full coverage due to the financing (no) and the recommended Country Insurance. I figured it would be crap, but even the premium on my car went down. I'm happy with it.

State laws are always a little different from state to state but you don't need full coverage (comp/collision) to purchase uninsured motorist.

Hey I got a quote from foremost for my gixxer.... $5800 a year!     Currently paying $349 a year with sate farm.  The only difference between coverage was foremost offered $1000 excess medical coverage that state farm didn't. That's just $1000 to cover co-pays and anything that the health insurance doesn't.   The $1000 medical coverage didn't seem worth it.

25 married, clean record, home owner.  state farm $46 a year thats for liability only and no medical payments.  the medical payments are the kicker in most instances.  with 1000 medical, it raised my premium up to 150 a year.

My insurance, I am 33, for my first year (this year) riding, which is full coverage, is $18/month through State Farm.  That is with a $500 deductible.  I thought that was pretty darn cheap.

Guys, Insurance in the States (thats where most of u are right?) must be nuts.  I'm glad I'm in Aussie.  $278 / year full cover, agreed price of $4500. Aus Dollars of course but do the math.  It's not bad.  I am over 25 y/o BTW.

Cheers
