Hey guys. I was cleaning the carbs on my '97 gs and came across this part in the carb.

I was wondering what the name of this part was.
Also, the o-ring on it seemed pretty worn.

Can I get away with it by just putting it back together or does the o-ring need to be replaced? If so, what is the part # for it?
Hi think thats the piston guide, but change that O ring it's shot. Any O ring will do as long as its the right size etc and petrol proof. Go to your local garage and get one. Probably be cheaper as well. Theres a link some where on here that has all the GS part numbers if you want the original jobby. :)
Yep. Piston guide. Did you pull the needle jet tube off just for the pics?
I've been cleaning/rebuilding carbs this week also.
That o-ring is not part of the K&L rebuild kit. You will have to source that one otherwise.
BTW, nice pics! :thumb:
That guide looks like mine did. Cleaning in mineral spirits did'nt remove all the residue.
Either you work in a really dark garage, or you're a really good photographer! :)
For the O-ring, try a power transmission place that does hydraulics. They usually have a good stock of O-rings. Otherwise, order the O-ring from the dealer and wait a week.
Heh, the camera I used was just an ordinary SD400. Pretty good for close-up and macro pictures.
That o-ring does come in the rebuild kit from partsnmore. I had a hell of a time getting that piece out of the carb body. I had to rig up a small puller tool, search on my name for a How-To
-M
All I did was pull it out. Is it supposed to be difficult to take out from the carb?
While we are on the carbs...
After 99% completion with the first set, I am tearing down the second set and have found a serious non-stock item in them.
Someone had inserted an approx. 1/2" plastic spacer between the jet needle spring seat and the spring. They also tool a Dremel to the inside of the top cover and place a large hex nut over the spring post with the spring inside the nut hole! :cookoo: Effectively it preloaded the piston spring. Anyone know why someone does this?
There must have been a tablespoon of rust between the two carbs. The stuff was under the main jets, in the bowls, falling out of every oriface, etc.
I'll post some pics on my webpage this weekend.
I would guess they were trying to keep the slides from rising too quickly. Could well have been a fix for a blocked vent due to all that rust.
Return it to stock and see what happens! :) 8)
Ok. Last thread jack...

Finally finished cleaning the carbs. I have one last question. I adjusted the floats to 1.45cm (14.5mm) and now if I blip the throttle it seems that the revs drop pretty rapidly. If the revs drop fast but do not go below the idle rev, would it still be condsidered too rich?
Jet it!!!!

If it revs up quickly, with no hesitation, then I would say it's perfect!
Savor, how did you get that part out? If I'm not mistaken, it's the only part that's keeping me from soaking my carbs.
