Welcome!

I'd squirt a little WD40 or Liquid Wrench in a cup, dip my finger in it, and use my finger to apply the stuff to help loosen up the pins; this way, directly spraying wont get on the brake pads.  If you can cover the pads with something, then I'd spray directly so that the WD40 will penetrate between the pins and the caliper body.

Give it a little time to work, maybe re-apply, or use a small punch, or screwdriver, to drive them out.

Ok, I had to go out and look, you're right there's no way to punch them out.

But there are two "springs" that hold the pads 'down', they are hooked over the middle of them, you will need a flat screwdriver to lift them up and over, you will see that they are hooked under the pins.

Are the hitch pins out of the pins that hold the pads?  Can you rotate the pins?

springs and r clips are out

Do the pads move, at all, on the pins?  I think our next step is to apply heat.

yer the pads move freely on the pins its just the pins that are siezed

Wonder if you can get something into the holes that the hitch pins were in to rotate the pins loose.  Otherwise, apply heat of some sort; personally I'd end up using my wife's blowdrier, since I don't have a torch or soldering iron; hmm...maybe the iron (for clothes).

Sounds like they are bent/jammed or otherwise seized in. I am glad to see the retaining clips are out or that would have been embarassing...

If they refuse to loosen and rotate with the application of a penetrating fluid, you have no choice other than to break the caliper apart. When doing this, you will loose the fluid in the housing and loose the seal between them. Not a job to do on a whim.

If you can wait for a better day, you can just rebuild the entire assembly. If your pads are totally/nearly gone, you are against your "tonight" deadline.

Otherwise, scratch's idea of applied heat - to the housing only - is the best solution/direction. It is a shame they don't have a pull hole on the outside of the support pin. That way you could remove the clip (found on the inside of the outer caliper half), hook the pull hole and rotate/pull the pin out.

Hmmmm? Sounds like a good aftermarket idea to me.

I've just taken a pic of one pulled apart here. If I've got page space, I'll post it.

Doh, sorry.  Um, just to be cautious, you might want to open the cap on the resivior and bleed some brake fluid, when you use the torch, because the heat may cause the brake fluid to heat up and expand, and while I know it can accept some heat (and it will cause the pistons to actuate), I don't want you to accidentally explode any of your seals.

Edit: Thanks, Starwalt!

the tonight deadline is out the window
think ill cu the pins and then punch half out into the caliper
then try dragging the other half out  ( hopefully will be able to get a grip on it then with some locking grips once the pads out

then a clean up and some new pins

If you can fight the urge to cut the pins, they will clean up very easy with a rotary tool and a light, flexible abrasive wheel. Here is the split caliper I mentioned previously. Click on it for a much larger view.

As you can see, even these support rods are grungy.  :icon_rolleyes: Also missing are the bolts that hold the halves together as well as all the other items. Since we were discussing just the pins...the rods have to be flush with the front of the caliper because the cover cap has to snap over the two halves. After brushing them up with a rotary too (Dremel, etc.) they will look like new.

I also use a caliper lube when reassembling them. CLICK HERE (http://www.midwayautosupply.com/detailedproductdescription.asp?9305) for a view of the stuff. Listed is application to the caliper pins. Just the sort of thing to prevent what you are dealing with the next time you have to do this.  :)

Title: Trivial rear brake discovery
Post by: scratch on March 17, 2006, 05:07:57 PM
While just checking my pads to see how much material is left on 'em (plenty since installed last year), I pressed on the rear brake pedal to see if I could see the pads move; they move, and they move one of the pins with them!  At least I know that pin will not give me any trouble when it comes time to replace pads.  :icon_mrgreen: Carry on.
