Title: *Update* Left Cylinder fouling.... HELP.... HELP!!!!
Post by: KYGS500E on March 17, 2006, 07:59:33 PM
Ok.... so my left plug keeps fouling (or fowling.... I cant spell)... I'm pretty sure its because I'm running rich or something.... If I put a new plug in will last for about 10 minutes running perfect... then for like 15 minutes rough.... and then it'll die at idle and buck and kick...

I need help finding out why...   My thinking is my float is a little too open and needs to be adjusted... any ideas how to do that?

Any other ideas on what could be causeing my plug to foul/fowl..... I'm pretty sure its running rich... the plug is black when it fowls/fouls

Ok, it's fouling because...most likely it would be the float set too high; you will need to pull the carbs (unless you can pull the floatbowls with the carbs on the bike), but before you do that we need to know how high the float level is to see if that is really the problem (could be a faulty choke plunger).  Use some clear fuel line to hook up to the drain spigot, hold up the hose next to the carb and open the drain screw.  Report back your findings, please.

put a new spark plug in the left cyl, then, set petcock to prime, disconnect the vacumeline from petcock and plug with a screw/bolt,  run the bike normaly and read the plug, if it clears up abit or damn near completely, its your vacume diaphram for the petcock  (sucking fuel into left carb through the line) this is what led me to run without vacume and Useing Prime to run.

The previous owner removed the petcock... I have the immediate two lines that leave the underside of the fuel tank and that go directly into a plastic "T" those lines merge into one at the "T" and runs to the carbs ( I think its the bottom part)

So changing from prime or reserve or whatnot doesn't work fo rme.... I can move the valve attatched to the tank with a flathead screwdriver

OK... I did the float hieght check... the fuel level in the line was even with the gasket between the bowl and the carb...

The left plug not only fowl/fouls but it also (after some riding) bends down (makes a smaller gap) almost to where it was completely closed
I'm so confused!  GRRRRRRRRRRr

127.5 jets... K&N pod... V&H slip on... I shouldn't be running rich?

Could valve settings do this?  I wouldn't think they could... but what do I know....  maybe bad plug wires??? I didn't think these went bad almost ever though...

HELP HELP HELP

Are you pulling our collective leg?

The only thing that would close the PLUG gap is hitting something - wrong plug (too long - which I doubt) or things very wrong in the engine.

Are you sure it is not just a build up of carbon on the electrode?

I pull no legs... and my timing is right... I've checked it several times

Forget the bend... lets focus on the fouling... I know the bending is prolly related.... but why is it running so rich or why else would my plug turn so darned black????

Fuel leaking past the choke plunger.  Or, jetting.

If the float seat is sealing good as you say the level is at the gasket line, only things left are Enrichener circut(choke adjustment/cable issues)  and really shoddy Orings  needing replaceing (dont forget the one under the slide guide for the Emulsion tube)

Perhaps the plug was dropped somewhere along the line before it was installed.  This would cause it not to spark correctly.  IF the cylinder isn't firing, then it could probably cause the same symptoms.  Get new plugs and install them.  Run it for a while, and let us know if it's still fouling.

I've been through 3 new plugs in a week

I'll try looking at the choke... actually... I have a HUGE susupission that that is what it is....  It was really hard to move a while back and I dont have a cable attatched to it... I push it with my finger (really ghey might I add) when I need it.

once properly jetted, ive not needed to use the choke on my GS for cold starting.
