Title: Noise above 6K rpm?
Post by: GSinUS on March 19, 2006, 06:12:51 PM
Does anyone hear a strange noise when revving above 6K rpm, no matter what gear/speed?  On my bike, once above 6K, I start hearing strange noise, like something scrubbing from what seems like the gas tank area?  And it is cyclical too, at a frequency of about 2 per second.  I know it's  a terrible description (just like any other noise description I've seen so far  :icon_rolleyes:) but maybe someone recognizes the symptom?

Thanks Scratch.
I was going to mention resonance, but I didn't know of the thread.
Depending on how full the tank is, mine buzzes at 5-6K.

If you can actually get it to hit the noise consistently, try sliding up solid against the tank and jam your knees in tight.
See if you can get it to stop or change.
This can indicate a basic shell resonance or something off on the tank mounting.

Wow, thanks, this description of what others experienced in the thread sounds interesting.  Guess I should've used the word "vibration" when i searched.

I am going to try squeezing the tank next time to see if it does away with the vibration.  Incidently, I do have less than a half of tank full, like others in Scratch's thread.

Is the rubber pad under the front tank hook in place? If not you get vibration metal on metal there, which is

a) noisy
b) wearing out first the paint and then the sheet metal hook

I was thinking this too.

The rubber pad is definitely there
