I have a 2004 GS500F with 10100 kms and I haven't done a valve clearance check or adjustment. The bike runs 100% with no valvetrain noise...
When should I check them?
Is it true that the exhaust valves can tighten up oven time and sometimes lead to no clearance?
I know of the interval stated in the manual but I think the time between adjustments is too little. What interval do you guys check your valves?

You should check them every 6500km (4000mi) because yes, the valves can have their clearances go out of spec in that time. The reason the interval is so short is because our engine is based off 1970s engine technology.
I check mine every 4000 miles.
Once again, I agree with Alpha; you need to check the clearances as scheduled, or risk causing EXPENSIVE damage. Too many people learn this lesson the hard way; don't be one of them. Every time you check the valves you will get better at it, and soon, it won't seem so intimidating. If you want someone to look over your shoulder, there are probably other members in your area who can help you. In fact, you might want to meet for a wrenching session; you can help one another do normal maintenance (chain lube and adjustment, oil change, whatever...). Since you want to do a valve adjustment, you should haul your GS to the meeting, or be the host, so your engine will be cold for at least 12 hours; 24 hours would be even better.
Just something to consider; another set of eyeballs won't hurt. You might even be able to borrow a valve tool, or have another member teach you how to check the valves properly. Have you seen Kerry's video?
