So i tried out my new icon tank bag. Its so much better riding to work with, than a back pack. But now i have tiny scuffs in my tank WTF. You guys know any miracle stuff to bufff out tiny scratches?
Im also not sure if the bag material scuffed it, or if there was dirt between the magnet and tank. either way i think im going to stich some felt to the bag.
I used to use the emergency strap with my magnetic one, but the strap was rubbing in one spot and went thru the clear coat, so now I don't use that extra strap. I notice I have more marks on the side of the tank from my knee's rubbing on it.
What tank bag do you guys have?
I went with the Tour Master/Cortech bags after going into the shop with every intention of buying another brand and model. Part of what influenced my decision was the really soft, cushy foam they use on the underside. No regrets yet- it's worked well.
Of course, any bag will scratch if it gets dirt or debris underneath. You have take some care with it, keep it clean, and keep in mind that the magnets will tend to pick up stuff. On the other hand, to fill up I just pick it up and move it to the saddle, and taking it with me into a store (or Starbucks) is one move. I find the convenience worth a little care.
I have this (http://www.newenoughhp.com/joe_rocket_manta_tank_bag_pictures.htm) tankbag. The only problem I have is that there's still black paint on the bottom, where the magnets are, from my old commuter GS (which had a rattlecan paint job); that black paint transfers to the SV, but it buffs right out! :icon_mrgreen: No scratches or nicks, though. :thumb:
Best thing to do about tiny scratches is to clean the surface really well will a mild soap, get a nice auto wax and then put some elbow greese into it and shine the hell out of you tank. the wax will hide the light surface scratches and protect the paint from being scratched further. Just reapply as neccesary. If the scratches are too deep and this doesn't work then a polishing compound is what you are going to need to buff the scratches out then apply wax and reapply to keep the finish.
I have a Joe Rocket Manta (http://www.newenoughhp.com/joe_rocket_manta_tank_bag_page.htm) tankbag. Small, magnetic, sleek. It's great for around town short day jaunts around the hill country because it isn't overly intrusive yet holds plenty of stuff. Recently I've been keeping my cell phone, tank bag raincover, wallet, keys, balaclava, glove liners, jacket liner, neck warmer, water bottle, a few granola bars/energy bars, and still have plenty of room left over to stuff something else in there if need be. It isn't a touring type tank bag because it doesn't hold very much, but it's definitely great for sport riding, as it still lets you get close to the tank if need be.
EDIT: and to be on topic: I agree with natedawg120. Usually working it out with some good car wax takes care of the scratches fairly well, but watch out for a polishing compound, as sometimes it can make things worse. Test it somewhere inconspicuous, like where the seat covers up the tank. If your tank was even the SLIGHTEST bit dirty the bag probably marked it up because of the dirt. It has to be freshly washed and waxed so that there isn't any risk of the magnets screwing with the paint. Go ahead and sew the felt on, just to be safe.

Alpha is right. You have to be real careful with polishing compound. It is easy to take to much off if you haven't dealt with it before that is why testing in an inconspicous are is important. :thumb: to Alpha
I ride with my tankbag a lot (Joe Rocket Velocity tank bag), and my tank shows it.
Oh well, I bought it to ride, and it looks like it's been ridden :)
