Title: The honeymoon is over.
Post by: thatguy1025 on March 27, 2006, 02:02:49 PM
Day 5 with my 06 500 and I'm starting to notice a whizzing sound whenever I'm in 6th gear. It sounds like a tree branch being swung through the air. It also has a hard time moving to 6th often requiring that extra little kick or else its like being in neutral again.

*sigh* guess Ill be going back to the dealership for more than a 600 mile service.
Thank god for warranties.

P.S. If anyone has any kind of incite please let me know what's going on with my bike

Thanks,
Nick

No clue based on what you described. Could be a bad top end gear set. But thats just a guess.

Take it back to the dealer and let them deal with it.

Could be a number of things... Take it back and make them fix it FOR FREE. :thumb:

Hmm, I have a similar symptom, though not extreme enough for me to worry about. I just assumed (as on a bicycle) it came from a slightly different angle of chain-against-sprocket. But I'm going to mention it to the folks at the shop in my upcoming 600-mile service. It is a bit odd that it's *only* in sixth gear.

Are you sure its an internal engine noise, ie: a metallic whine?
My YZF will make a odd noise at a specific rpm because of something vibrating in the ram-air system in the nose of the bike.

Ride the bike at where the noise comes in (6th gear obviously) and note the RPM it is happening in. Pull the clutch in and let the bike coast for a while in gear, drop at least 30mph before downshifting or letting the clutch out.  Did you continue to hear the sound the whole time or did it go away after a while?
Down shift to 3rd (the gear "nearest" 6th on the shaft) and see if you hear the same thing at that RPM. Go back up to 6th, yes the engine will probably bog, but listen for the sound again.
If you heard it with the clutch in and lugging in 6th, then its definately a transmission problem.
If you heard it with the clutch in but then it went away as you slowed down, then I think the problem may be a misaligned chain or a bad sprocket.
If it occurred in both 6th and 3rd (or other gears) at a similar speed AND rpm then its something on the bike rattling.

This will be good stuff to tell the mechanics at the dealer.
Good luck.

I've noticed sometimes my airbox makes a noise similar to the one you describe.

Yep, some people just have noisy boxes.

Seriously though, do check around the bike before you take it in. Do what was previously mentioned, and also put it in neutral and put it on the sidestand and give it some gas. Getting the revs up and down and walking around it to listen to the bike will help you make sure it isn't just a loose screw or something. I know that after I tinted my windscreen and lost one of the screws, the thing buzzed like crazy.

Just an idea. I'd rather everyone keep their bikes with them and away from the dealership as much as possible.

could it be the chain wizzing away?

on my 05' GS in 6th gear around 90km/h i can hear the chain kind of wizzing away, at least i think its the chain, it sure sounds like it. heard similar chain sounds on other bikes before, so thats what i think it sounds like.

Nice post, James, thanks for putting some thought into it.

Some further notes on my situation:
1. My bike is fairly new (540 miles) and there are other rattles from the windshield area I hear at various gears and RPMs. This noise is tighter and softer than the rattling I hear from the windshield.
2. Because I'm breaking in the engine, I've been keeping the RPMs below 5000.
3. I notice this *only* in 6th gear. It starts immediately as soon as I put it into 6th and it doesn't seem to go away with increasing RPMs, although at a certain point the wind noise blocks everything out--so I can't be entirely sure here.
4. It definitely doesn't sound like any engine whine I've ever heard before. Less of a pitch than a white noise.

Good call on coasting with the clutch--I'll try that next time I'm out and see what happens.

Where the fluids properly toped off before you started riding the bike?

maybe the sixth gear could be unbalanced or have a poor machining?

Hi, bumping this because I noticed I have this problem too (but I'm a noob and I used the search function! )
Anyone ever figure this out? I have the same issue on my 06, ~1600 miles.
The bike runs fine, even in 6th, but as soon as I switch into 6th and the throttle is applied I hear that whizzing air sound...  :dunno_white:

+1 on the lost windscreen screw!

The rattle was there before it was lost, but I do notice a similar sound on my bike, ('06 500F) and took it to be normal, been there since I got it (new) and now has 7,000 km (about 4400 mi.), never been too woried about it, but I do get it in other gears from time to time like its got more to do with ground speed : engine speed ratio.

Like a fly stuck in the bike!! :dunno_white:
