Title: Bike not running rant - join in!
Post by: Grainbelt on April 01, 2006, 04:42:09 PM
Anybody else working on their bike instead of riding it, chime in.

[rant]

Freaking POS right carbureter is all effed up. Started it for the first time this spring and it ran ok until warm and then it was clearly running rich, backfiring, and generally not behaving properly so I shut it down. Drained and flushed the float bowls, didn't help.

Took off the airbox and tank for the first time to get a little deeper - genius previous owner installed two conical inline fuel filters an inch from the tank petcock on both fuel lines.  Was a fun hour unhooking all that crap.  :2guns: Squirted some carb cleaner into the carbs, let it sit maybe 1/2 an hour, hooked the tank and fuel lines back up and flushed it through.  Started it up again. Ran ok for a bit, then started sputtering and filled the air with a nice cloud of unburnt gas ridden exhaust fumes as fuel dripped from somewhere around the right carburetor.

So I took the carbs off and they are now in the basement while I drink beer, order a rebuild kit, and try to decide whether to attempt it on my own or take it someplace.

[/rant]

Feel much better now, thanks. Was actually a good afternoon wrenching, i have a desk job so I don't get to do that much.  Just pissed off that I can't ride.  Anybody with carb experience that happens to be in Saskatchewan chime in, beer and dinner on me.

Keep 'em coming! you can't all tell me your GS's are running  :nono: :bs:

Stupid early 90's GS's. I saw a ninja 650 during a parts run - they really need to put that motor into a wee-strom/klr kindofabike. I'd be all over that. Get rid of this non-running POS.

I guess I have something to complain about...

/*

so... long story short, i bought a GS, there's a recall on it, and they won't give it to me until they fix it, sometime next week. (is that a run on sentence?) So now, I have to drive 4 hours to ride this damn thing, so I want to go next weekend, but isn't Easter or something coming up?  oh well...

*/

Have you thought about ditching the carbs and fuel injecting it?  That's what I'd do, but I'm an EFI freak, and carbs scare the pants off me.

My chain broke! Then my rotor started squeaking. Then it started stalling out at stop lights. Enough is enough!  :flipoff: This is my first bike and I decided to rip it apart, see what makes it tick, and clean most of the parts (haven't tackled the carbs yet!). So far I've order a few misc parts from BikeBandit. Sanded, primed, and repainted my headlight housing and brackets, stripped and painting exhaust next weekend, performed complete fenderectomy (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=25197.0 ), carb rebuilt kit in the mail, and given the gs500 a thoroug bath. Also plan on installing fuel filter. Should be done in the next few weeks. Can't wait to see how she turns out!!  :cheers:

Does this count?  It's 12:30am right now... So it can't be ridden (too late), and for the next two days, it's rain and thunderstorms.

I have an older GS that I get to ride all year rain or shine. I love the rare chance I get to work on it, but for some reason it doesn't complain much even though it has almost 40,000 miles on it... oh wait are we supposed to be complaining.

My clutch lever broke when I low-sided.  Now I can't ride until my We Todd Did dealer gets in my clutch levers.  Damn bike!

i try to ride but my damn bike keeps popping fuses, its driving me nuts and i really don't want to take it to the stealer because i could only imagine what they would charge to find and fix an electrical problem. :mad:
