Title: something leaking
Post by: punpun on April 01, 2006, 10:59:42 PM
hey guys... i have done a search and it looks like it might be the lube from the sprocket.... its leaking right above the kick stand and is basicly in that one spot... the stuff is super gummy and is coming from what i would believe would be the sprocket cover and what it touches on the bottom, which is just below/behind the sprocket. is there anyway this could be oil, or is it just chain lube and how can i make sure.... thanks guys!

I would almost gaurentee it is just the chain lube. I've had the problem and was worried about it at first too.

However, there are some things you could do.

1) Clean out your sprocket cover.  [more info...] (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=20468.0). Get the gunk out!

2) Check your oil and make sure it is at the proper level. I mean, if you have the proper oil in the engine, what else would it be besides oil or chain lube?  :dunno_white:

Not too sure about that. There are three seals in there and two of them are notorious for wearing out on older machines: Clutch rod seal and shifter shaft seal. If you have a slight oil leak there it will dissolve the gunk that the chain deposits under the sprocket cover and drip out as a gooey mess.

It's probably not enough oil loss to worry about oil level, but constantly dripping oil under your bike when parking isn't the safest thing to do. (Just think about how nice that will feel on your black rubbers.)

would i be able to tell where it is coming from if i take off the sprocket cover, anything i should look at to see if its not the seals?
