I know there have been a number of posts regarding the studs (3 of them) that old the cover to the oil filter in place (seems fairly common to overtighten and break one!)- but I still have a question. So I overtightened and broke a stud, extracted it with an extractor bit, ordered a new one for $2. Oh yeah- it's a 2001 GS 500.
So now it is time to put it back together- 2 questions:
1. Should I use locktite when I put the steel stud into the aluminum oil pan, or just screw it in?
2. It is a pretty firm fit- getting that stud to screw into the hole without the use of some plyers that may ruin the threads- so would it be reasonable to- hold the stud in my hand- screw on the cap- then screw the stud and cap assembly in the hole with the oil filter cover held in place by the other two studs & caps with the aid of (gently!) a wratched bit and wratched screwdriver?
Thanks!!!
Hi there,
To install a stud...
Yes, you can use some stud and bearing mount -- Locktite red -- to hold it firmly in place. Locktite blue will be removable and I don't think you want that to come out again.
To install a stud properly -- take two nuts and thread them onto the stud, then tighten them hard against each other. Use the outer nut to turn the stud into the engine casting, and that's it. :)
Unbolt the nuts from each other when the stud is fully installed and you're done.
Good luck, and use a torque wrench on the oil filter nuts next time.
Best wishes,
Todd
IMO there's no need for loctite...
Put the stud in there, put cap on, hand tight + 1/2 turn, check for leaks, have fun.
