Title: Getting closer... electrical help please!
Post by: KYGS500E on April 08, 2006, 10:33:03 AM
ok... I'll restate the problem again... my left cylinder keeps fouling... i've:

rebuilt the carbs
adjusted the float hight (it is at the gasket between the bowl and the carb body)
replaced all o-rings
replaced the coils (with used ones... this helped some)
replaced the cdi box

I took it out for a long ride yesterday... it rode great... plugs looked good.... but this morning I woke up... warmed the bike up... drove for a mile or two and it started running rough.... I drove home.... left plug was fouled again...  So I proceeded with more testing...

I have a feeling its electrical... here's what I did to test after all of this was replaced

i put two new spark plugs in

Pulled out the left plug and wire (letting fuel/air out of cylinder into atmosphere.... this was the plug that was fouling) and the bike ran steady on just the right plug/cylinder

When I switched and took out the right plug and wire (the good cylinder) it ran terribly and would die if I didn't give it gas

If I have new coils and cdi... would this point to a signal generator?  a ground?  the rectifier?

Please help.... I'm trying to sell this to a guy next week... I work for a church ... have a great deal of integrity... and can't sell people a busted bike... i want it gone... any advice/input would help

Have you looked at the signal generator under the ignition plate cover on the right side?  Is the rotor on the shaft securely?  Are the pickups secure?  Is the pickup's plate secure?  If you rotate the crank by hand, can you see if the rotor is hitting either of the pickups?

When you took the plugs out, did you ground them to see if you had spark?

if ya rotate it by hand should ya see it hitting, or just very very close to hitting. thanks

I'll check to see if they're coming very close to hitting or not... they do spark when grounded (the plugs that is) but the left seems weaker intermittenly
