Title: After Market Bits Help!
Post by: jimmy500 on April 08, 2006, 01:00:34 PM
Hi All GSowners, I have joined the ranks, and I have to say, it's a brilliant little bike to get back in the saddle with!

If anyone knows where to get the follownig, or has them for sale, I'd be really greatful if they could post the web link or shop number etc..

Oh, and UK only, as much as I love the machine, I'm not going over the pond to get bits! ;)

A belly pan/Bottom Fairing for the GS500e (c. 1991)

Decent rear shock to replace the super spongy one that seems to live in the back of my bike, something a little stiffer would be nice, I heard somewhere that a gsx600f rear shock or Gsxr shock could be used? Anyone with any experience?

Progressive front shocks?  The front end  with originals is soft, and the bike cries out for something better to replace the stock part, it WANTS to go through corners more smoothly, and belss it, it does it's best!

Any advice on the best tyres to get, I'm running bridgestone BT45 on the rear and 57 on the front, any better combo's?

Ta Muchly!

Jim

(91 J plate 35K tax and MOT for £200!  All smiles!)

Hello jimmy, nice to see another brit in here  :icon_razz: Try this outfit, I have used them many times with no complaints but bear in mind there is not much choice in general when it comes to available accessories for the old GS.
I put 2 brand new BT45s on my GS for the MOT when I first got it and from what I have read there is nothing better. Uprated rear shocks are available as are progressive fork springs but they may cost as much as you paid for you bike  :o

If that's a BT57 on the front with a BT45 rear, there aren't many worse combos.  The BT57 is a radial and the BT45 is a bias ply.  Bad mix.  To quote Avon Tire: In the UK it is illegal to fit a radial front tyre with a crossply or bias-belted rear tyre. It is also illegal to fit a bias-belted front tyre with a crossply rear tyre. Fitment legislation may differ in other countries, therefore national laws should be observed.

The BT45 are OE tires on the GS500 now and are getting a bit dated.  Any of the newer sport touring bias tires are noticeably better, like the Pirelli Demons, Metzeler Lasertecs, and the Michelin Actives.

Jimmy??
Runsilent is correct about the tyre mix, the link below verifies his comments. The fact that its an illegal and dangerous combo` should have been picked up on the last MOT resulting in a failure, either the Mechanic missed it or the tyre has been fitted since the last test. Get them changed soon as possible you are unknowingly breaking the law and may have invalid insurance
