Title: credit card debt is the DEVIL! (rant)
Post by: ashman on April 10, 2006, 04:01:19 AM
Credit card companys are the devil, so is growing up. I'm 23 yrs old still have another year or so before I graduate. Work about 30 hours a week as a server. I just sent off my monthly payment to Discover card SOON I'll have my balence below 2k I can't wait to get it payed off. I never went on crazy shopping sprees or anything, I used it when I was younger early on in college and my parents would pay it off monthly. Good ole days, well we eventually worked out a monthly budget and I did not work enuff to live w/in my means plus a semester of college that I ended up withdrawing and wasteing paying out my pocket. My parents are cool enuff to pay for my education, I'd be uber in debt w/o them.  Mean while i'm saving up to move back to La to get a new place. their is never enuff $$$. Anyway, being my situation isnt too far off from the average college student. I cant believe anyone would finance something like a car or bike.

a few grand on a CC isn't bad.  I'd gladly trade debt with you.  My CC helps pay my tuition whch means it baloons up over 10G then gets whittled down.  Of course the bikes and cars are paid for so 10G's isn't that bad.

Just do what you're doing, pay it off as aggressively as you can and you'll be fine.

Dude, don't use credit cards!  When I graduated from grad school I had over $15,000 in CC debt.  It took me five years at $500 a month ( and throw in every bonus I ever got, like between $1000 and $5000 whenever I could) to pay it off.  If I didn't have that crap I could have bought a house sooner and I could have had nice cars, etc.  Plus my credit was wrecked.  I know sometimes you don't have a choice, but that should be the ONLY time you ever have credit card debt.  Mine is finally paid down to zero, and I feel like a hero.
When I was in school, I told myself, "I'll make enough money to pay it off when I get out."  But paying off a lot of credit card debt is hard for anyone, no matter their income level.

I've had 5 digit CC debt...  No good...  My wife and I both lost our jobs in the Dot Bomb and neither of us could find any job anywhere...  Even all the crap jobs were taken. :?  McDonalds wasn't hiring 'cause all the CEOs were flipping burgers or something.

We were planning our wedding at the time (by "We" I mean "She") and had come up with a budget, location, etc that worked with our old wages...  Well, that wasn't happening any more and we had to change everything around.  We lost several thousand in deposits (don't ask me...  The wife did it).  And for some reason, she still wanted a "Big" wedding...  Then once the wedding came, they f'ed up and had an open bar...  There was another $4,000 on top of the 8k or so for the rest of the wedding crap...

When I lost my job, I also went back to school... Cha-Ching... More money on the CC...

THEN!  My wife was diagnosed with a chronic illness and we had NO insurance...  State "poor people" insurance wouldn't cover us (they actually told my wife to get pregnant so she could have health insurance)...  TONS of tests and brand-name only early market release drugs...  Holy crap!  $26 a pill?  Are you f'in kidding me?!?!?

Anyway... It totalled somewhere around $26K in a little under two years.    :o :o

It took both of us working full time jobs and living at her parent's house for about a year, but we paid it all off and saved up a good chunk of change which was then spent over the next year, plus another $6000 in CC debt, while my wife was living in LA and I was living in WA...  SUCK!

Anyway... CC Debt == BAD.  Pay it off ASAP and don't run it up more...  But, you already know that.

Sometimes yeah, it is the only way to pay the bills. I only use it when I have to, like back during Katrina, I had to keep gasing up everytime I could cuz most of the stations were w/o power or wernt gonna reopen. I spent probally 300 bux in gas during it all, I filled a ton of jugs for my parents generator and for my sis and g/f.  It sucked. I'll get it payed off eventually, sux seein all this money i send to them I think many I could have a new gsF here soon :( oh well.
