Title: What are your non-motorcycle hobbies?
Post by: mike_mike on April 12, 2006, 04:40:38 PM
What do you like to do when you're not riding or working on your motorcycle?

I like to play the electric or acoustic guitar. I also read non-fiction books and do all sorts of nerdy computer stuff.

How about you folks?

I do all things multimedia.

Video editing/conversion/compression, practicing low-polygon 3D modeling, 'beautyfying' php scripts (from hotscripts and such), writing or recording tutorials (html and video) and posting them on forums or my website, researching game-making tools, small electronics projects, beat the carp outta players on bf1942 (been playing that one for years now), some MMO (currently SilkRoad Online), and more but I can't remember now.

What I do want to get into is flying model airplanes or better yet, remote controlled helis (anyone knows about those things?)

I did some photography for a while...

e x p e n s i v e   :o

I couldn't justify it anymore beucase the money to pleasure ratio was terrible, so i sold all my gear.

I've always wanted to just tinker with those little nitro engines, that seems like it would be fun.

Ah hobbies...  Only if I had the time for all of 'em...  Here are the hobbies in order I actually make time for:

Wife
Band
Eating
Sleeping
And sometimes playing poker
Other than that, there's not enough time in the day...  If I could kick my annoying sleeping habit, I could do all the other stuff I love.

I love photography, but have a crappy camera that I never use.
I love building things from wood, but have few power tools and nowhere to use them.
I love model building, but haven't built one since I was about 12.
I love playing all kinds of video and computer games, but if I actually indulge, I make no time for anything else (on-the-wagon game addict).
I love snowboarding, but F'ed up my ankle and all the snow melted.
I love wakeboarding, but don't own a boat or a wakeboard.
I love playing paintball, but I stopped playing when I was unemployed 4 years ago and haven't played since then.
etc...  etc...
Mmmmm bicycling.  I am obsessed with mountain and road biking.  I logged 5,000+ miles last year road biking, and probably around 1,500 mountain biking.

Look in the background here...

My time right now is divided between engineering, motorcycles, and my girlfriend.

If I didn't have work or school and had plenty of time to pursue the things I'm interested in:

Hot Rods (I want to build/restore one)
Photography (I've got a crappy camera, but I still want to learn)
Jiu jitsu (did it for a while, but didn't have enough time to commit)
Building stuff (just stuff, don't really care what. Models, support structures, bridges, decks, etc...)
Video games (they take away from studies, so I rarely play them anymore)
Waterskiing (used to ski regularly, but parents sold the boat and haven't been in a long time)

The list goes on. Lots of little nerdy/geeky things.

Please do! I realize they can be a lot of work, but it's also worth it when you get it just right. That's also why I want to take an old CB550 or CB750 and turning it into a café racer.

I used to have hobbies...I used to love luge-boarding and a few other things...but I allowed a car hobby to interfere with them.  Then my car hobby slowly became a collection of cars I'm parting out over various forums and ebay...and it's become so time consuming and irritating that I don't want to do it anymore.  Pretty much the only projects I still get to pursue that I really like working with are bike ones.

Currently on my list of projects:

Getting my lightweight bandit wheels, swinger and 40mm race-tech forks on my EX500...then I'll cut off the tail I made for it and start working on adapting a K4 GSXR tail to it.

CB900 chop-project powered by a turbocharged GS750 block.  Working on setting up the frame right and adapting my Ohlins F3 600 forks to the front and my TL's old swingarm with a 929RR 6-spoke 6" rear rim on the back.  Then it's time to start fitting the motor.  I would LOVE to do an intercooled blow-through setup but I'm working on doing this project for free...so we're going to be stuck with a straight shot draw-through setup with a Garret T25 off a Z32 300Z pulling through dual 38mm throttle bodies.  Looking for 7lbs of boost.

Then there's the whole "I can't wait to get that damned yellow paint off my TL" project....

My hobby is flying helicopters.    I'm going to school to be a Commercial pilot.  Right now I have my private license.   Pretty much all my free time is spent flying and studying for school.     Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a pilot and finally got into school about a year ago.

Pablo, what's the philosophy behind fixed gear? KISS?

I cycle as well (commute of 20 km, so it's more of a practical thing)

I rarely get time for it, but I'm into RC gliding. And all things aviation.

Haven't been a gamer since Omega Race.
Used to be road cyclist, rode some velodrome.  Nothing cooler than fixed gear, makes it into a completely different sport.
Used to be private pilot, power plant mechanic; not enough activity.  In aviation you need to spend a lot of time with it or not at all.  Nothing is more hazardous than a sporadic pilot.
Sporadic reader, I'll read a book a week for two months then none the rest of the year. Nothing current; Bourdain, Vonnegut, Friedman.
      Regular raquetball player.
Work takes me on the road at least 6 weeks a year.  Wife usually goes along.  So travelling is the most significant activity.
      SpeedVision motorcycle road racing junkie.
Oh yeah, I work sometimes, just not very hard.

My wife and I are homebrewers.  We've been doing it for about a year and it's great fun.  I got a kegerator that fits 2 pepsi kegs I fill with beer and a seperate fridge for microbrews.  It's awesome having 2 beers on tap that you created, plus 50 different microbrews in the garage.

Geocaching with wife and my two dogs.  It's kind of like a high tech treasure hunt.  Nothing like hiking for a few miles to exchange a keychain for a bouncy ball.

Huge cubs fan and penn state basketball fan.  Yes, that's right, PSU basketball.

Between work and keeping up with the house, there isn't much time for other things.

When I'm not motorcycling, I'm automobiling!

I'm really into precision automotive performance, I have an A4 that I hope to use strictly as a track car someday.  I love Audis, note the avatar, ain't that just sexy?  If you need to know anything about turbochargers, EFI, or Coil on Plug ignition systems, I'm your man  :thumb:

Used to have a girlfriend that I called a hobby because she took a lot of time and and money too.  She didn't like being called a hobby for some reason  :dunno_white:

I do a lot of different things.  I like to tinker on cars and bikes, build models, build rc cars, and would like to get back into rc flight but I know that the first thing i would do is crash right into the ground.  What i need to do for that is find a good rc flight sim that i can use a real controller with to work the bugs out of me before i wreck an explensive plane.  Oh and i fish, camp, hike....... list goes on.  we'll just say that in the warm months i like to keep busy

Pablo, what's the philosophy behind fixed gear? KISS?

lots of things. first, I use it to train in the rain. so there's no mess to clean. its as low maintenance as possible, k.i.s.s. definitely. second, well, the fixed gear bikes to me are the essence of a bike in its most pure form, especially true of the true track bikes that have no brakes. I resisted selling my vintage guerciotti track bike but I hardly rode it when I was riding lots...third, for training, the fixed gear helps you develop your pedal stroke in circles for better and more power. people used to call me a sewing machine because I would do hills on the thing and coming down the hill spinning my legs/cranks at 170rpm made me look like a sewing machine...I had good spin.

that used to be an old beater a friend had. its an slx frame from the mid 80's. has loads of miles on it (he was riding for years on it doing 300+ miles a week. I comandeered it for storing it for him for 3 years...had the rear track dropouts welded on after riding it using the standard dropouts for a few years. I still love that bike the best...

some are. My race bike cost me $3500 a few years back, at a discounted race sponsor price. everyday training bike about that much. fancy race wheels (dont like them, I'm old school that way) can run $1500 for a set. tires were $80 a peice. My track bike I bought used for $1000. that Bianchi fixed gear is worth nothing-too old, unless the Campy Record components are worth something as vintage...

I collect fossils and minerals as a hobby.  The only investment is time -driving and collecting.  I have found a few good invertebrate specimines and quite a few nice minerals our here. AZ is a great place for lots of copper and iron minerals and has a ton of invertebrate fossils if you know where to look.  Not a lot of vertebrate fossils but I know where to get small dino footprints.

Another snowboarder checking in.  During the 5 minutes that there's snow here on the ground in so cal every year, I do alot more boarding than riding the GS.  Hit the snow every Sunday.  Course, we went to Mammoth last weekend and hubby broke his leg in new and exciting ways, so this season is probably about done for me.

Other than that, I like to sleep, read comic books, draw, take a few snapshots, go to Disneyland, and loaf around.

No pics handy but it's not too hard to find fossil localities by doing a google search.  start with "fossils nebraska" or "fossil locations your state" and continue to do variations.  Most every state has some sort of fossil beds.

      Same deal with minerals.

How did I get into it?  Not really sure, I wanted to find places to ride and it just went from there.

I retired my thumbs.  my id on xbox live is 3imo also. I haven't played in about two months.  I think I am suffering from withdrawal symptons.

I like to take a break every now and then so I cn forget the boards and make the game more challanging, again.  also the new boards keep comming out and man what a trip, to learn a new board. makes you feel like a newb, again.

I have been playing halo since Halo 1 hit the stores. bettr than any drug out there.

heres a pic of us playing halo in Kuwait. 1.5 weeks before entering Iraq in 03'

the funny thing is that this is not NBC training we didn't know if it was an actual threat or not.  someone called GAS GAS GAS and we paused the game to put on our masks and started playing again.

I am into IT stuff like computers, networking, Internet, security, etc. I like tinkering with my car and can appreciate a good afternoon of wrenching. I like to write in general, and I busy myself with taking various classes and courses and learning new things. I like reading science fiction, philosophy, biography, and non-fiction. I like to travel with my GF; we take a lot of little day and overnight trips. I also like going to comedy clubs, concerts, plays, movies, dining out, BBQ's - I love anything with food!  :icon_twisted: Lately I've been pretty busy with work and class and spending time with my girl (she is also my best friend, aww   :kiss3:.

when at home, i play the explorer and jem through a Peavy bandit 112 (old pawn shop special) but when practicing with a drummer, or doing gigs, i play through Randall Warhead head on Marshall 4x12 with a BOSS heavy metal distortion and some sort of unknown wah.

Its a pretty cool set up,  I am trading my buddy heads because he likes my Randall head and I like his Marshall,

Played in a band for around 7 years through highschool and college but don't really have the time anymore.  Lots of blues based stuff like skynyrd, petty, clapton, SRV, ZZ Top.  Fun times.
