Title: I'm back. Well sort of.
Post by: JeffD on April 13, 2006, 12:35:04 PM
Alright its been awhile and crazy to boot.  Quick summary: Graduated College, Started working, GS sat for 6 months and I'm trying to get it going again.  Getting married in a month, moving, and changing jobs.

I have not made any LED taillights.  I would like to finally get at them again but it will be longer still.  I dont want to say any dates as I'm sure I've dissapointed quite a few already.

I have 2 kits but am keeping them for novelty.

Hope all is well,

And my GS: well I put jumper cables on backwards for about 3-5 minutes and after it wouldn't do anything.  It's been 6 months.  I replaced the battery, and the starter still doesn't want to kick over.  It will crank maybe 1/4 turn and then act like its dead. (Brand new battery, and I tried with jumpers hooked up correctly with the same result).  I can push start it but didn't let it run as the oil is old and I just wanted to make sure the engine circuitry is still ok.

Any clue?  I am thinking a partially bad starter (a few shorted coils) but dont want to put much $$ into it as it has 35,000 miles and is 10 years old.  TRACK BIKE!!!   Either way I got my $$ out of the bike.  $1600++ for the bike and put 26,000 miles on it.   So far...

Welcome back!  And congradulations!

Turn the crank over by hand a few times, just to get things moving (make sure they're moving/movable).

Jumper cables backwards, huh?  Fuse?  No.  Regulator/rectifier?  Polarized the starter to go backwards?

The battery was dead so I hooked up jumper cables...but I didn't realize that I had them backwards on the car. (Red to (-) and Black to (+)) but Correct on the bike (Red to (+) and Black to (-)).

Didnt check fuses as all electronics seem to be working.  Except that when I hit the starter button everything goes dead and then comes back up after I let go of the starter (acting like a dead battery).

I started the bike by bump starting it (push start) and it ran for maybe a minute until I shut it down because the oil is old.

Wheather the oil is old or new, you're going to have to run it to get the oil up to temp to drain it; unless you want to drain the oil cold.

Congrats Jeff. Marriage actually rules (mine does anyway) Could be the fact that I didn't get yelled at for getting the CF Wileyco though. I'll let you know when the bill for the K$N comes in.

Since fuse is still good, (bike runs when push started) I would check the engine start switch, clutch switch,  and starter relay, (yellow/green wire) and as well as the starter.

Looks to me like they are really about the only things that could short to grnd and kill everything without affecting the fuse only when you hit the start button.  :dunno_white:    (I am guessing the starter relay, starter is my second guess)   :icon_confused:

(but then again, be advised, I usually don't know what I am talking about)  :cookoo:
