Title: I look like Pee-Wee Herman
Post by: My Name Is Dave on April 14, 2006, 09:02:44 AM
When I ride I do, because I wear leather pants with my Dr. Martens, and there's a 3-inch or so gap between the end of the pants and the top of the boots. Not a good look, especially when I have grey wool socks on.

So I'm gonna buy some boots. Real motorcycle boots. Like these:

Just kidding. On newenough.com, there are two boots in closeout that I'm considering. These: http://www.newenough.com/sidi_b_one_boots_page.htm

And these:
http://www.newenough.com/gaerne_shockwave_boots_page.htm

Anyone have any thoughts on either of these? I'd like to spend under $150, as I feel guilty for buying them anyways when I could be putting a flange and Wileyco on her (or putting money into the car I'm trying to sell, but who cares about cars anyways?), but I need them not for looks, but so I'm fully-geared up when I ride.

The Gaerne's are marked down from 240 to 120, which is a steal. The Sidi's are down from 200 to 160. Also a good deal, but less drastic of a savings.

Oh, I just went in and looked, and there's red or blue in both models in size 13. I'd prefer all black so that they would go with any and all gear (I have both a red AND a blue leather jacket), but I can't be a picky little Buddha Loves You when money's tight.

Any thoughts and ideas are appreciated. Thanks dudes.

Dave

Both seem to be good boots, I'd see which one fits better, otherwise default to the Gaernes, because of price.

Hmmm, I like the cut of your jib. But I'm not really able to go to their warehouse and try them on, so that makes it tough. Although I could go to Cycle Gear or something and try a pair of each brand on. I think I just answered my own question...

I got the B-1's.  I love them.  Feel pretty protected and they don't look bad off the motorcycle.  Great heel, toe, shin protection, and a little protection on the ankle.  I've had them about 1 month and they are breaking in pretty well.  Sizing was about right on for me.

I'd prefer the Sidi, but that's because I like how they capture my heel (better protection that way).

Cool, thanks. And I see a new post leaning towards the Sidi's. I am more familiar with that brand and of course was thinking about those first, but saving money would be sweet, assuming the boots are of equal quality. And the accountant in me can't over look the fact that the Gaerne's were originally more expensive and now are cheaper than the Sidi's. Not the best reason to pick them, but still a damn good reason to look into them.

So did you get them off newenough? That site rocks my shaZam!. All my leathers are from there. Granted they don't fit me like a custom suit would, but I'm tall with long skinny legs and arms but a medium torso, so I can't blame them.

Yeah I got them off newenough during closeout.  That site is great.

I've been really tempted to by the AStars spinner jacket or Tecknic Violator jacket but I don't have anywhere locally to try them on and I don't know how either of them are in warm weather.  I really need a good leather jacket.

Right now I have a Tourmaster Jett textile with CE armor and 600 Denier and some FirstGear HT textile overpants with the optional CE armor.   Plus the Sidi boots and AStars AP1 gloves, I've given newenough lots of business the last 4 weeks.  :thumb:

I'm headed to pitt for the cubs/pirates series this weekend so I hope to try on some leathers.

Good luck with the boots I give the sidi's a  :thumb:

All of my leathers are Teknic. I love that stuff, really good gear. I got my jackets and pants all for $100 each. shaZam!, try and beat that. You can't.

What size are you? I can try to help with sizing, but Sandy in customer service is a-one at that and you may wanna send any questions her way.

So any opinion on the Harley boots? They'd look sweet with my full-face helmet. Perfection!

Yet another possibility = Longer Leather Pants.

You can't beat Doc Martens for comfort. No way, no how.

Since I now ride a Sportster rather than a sport bike(it still has the word "sport" in it) I'm not limited to color coordinated leather, nylon, or spandex ;) clothing. I ride for fun and dress for comfort. Doc Martens can't be beat. I just buy my jeans slightly long and wear my comfy Docs. :thumb:

If you like the Docs, keep 'em.

Those Docs would look good with some Harley ass-less chaps!

Oh absolutely, I wear the boots and love them. I ride in jeans (no flaming, please) 90% of the time. Only when I'm going on the bike for a specific ride (not commuting to work, or the store, etc.) Do I wear the leather pants. I like them, and I'm not in the position to buy a longer pair right now. So that's not an option.

Plus, I'd say race/street boots are gonna fare better in a crash, god forbid that ever occurs. And I'm thinking of getting into track days and possibly racing this year (I'm gonna get an old CB or something for a project bike, not race the GS), so boots would be pretty necessary at that point.

But I agree, the Doc rules.

For racing, yeah you need more protection. I don't ride at my or my bikes limits too often so I don't dress for that. Shirt and sometimes jacket, jeans, Docs, gloves, and helmet is enough for me. I don't worry so much about sliding down the pavement since I'd rather ram a cage if need be. I've done it twice and walked away from totaled bikes. Braking is what has to be mastered to avoid the slide and still not hit too hard. So ... dress for your conditions. Best of luck.

Yeah, I'm a little more obsessive about gear, so we're gonna differ there. Never without a jacket, all-leather gloves, so on.
To each his own. That's just me. And you are free to wear what you want, that's part of the freedom in motorcycling. Yeah, and I hate you by the way; Arizona is slightly nicer than Oregon when it comes to weather. Lucky.

Yeah, well just about everyone on GSTwin hates me for one reason or another.

I hate winter, so that's why I live in Arizona. I used to ride without a helmet until I got a 2000 GS with no windshield. Now I do wear a helmet, so the GS was good for me.

Hi, my name is Cycle Gear, and I'm awesome.

So I first of all got off early for the weekend because today's like a holiday or something, so I cruised to CG. I'll just cut to the chase and tell you that I picked up 2 pairs of boots (I need to try them both on with my leathers and the socks I'd normally wear, and sit on the bike with them, before I decide).

Frank Thomas Aqua Pro Vent: Was $199.99, Now $89.99
Frank Thomas Strike: Was $169.99, Now $99.99

Does anyone have anything positive or negative about either? I'm gonna try them on and fool around with them, but if someone can persuade/dissuade me on one or the other, that would help the process of elimination. I'll post pics in a second to help.

Thanks! Oh, and I got some Pro-Grips 719's. Awesome.

Here they are. On the left is the Strike, on the right is the Aqua Pro Vent, and in the background is my stupid green couch. Desfruta!

I'm pretty much stuck. Without any sorts of reviews or user opinions to go off of, I have to pretty much just pick one. I like the looks of the all-black pair, whereas I also like the silver accents in the other pair. I like the toe sliders on the black ones (I swear I'll use them someday), but I like that the other pair is waterproof. I think the all-black ones seem sturdier, but the other ones still seem to be good.

Oy vay...

Dude, how is this a difficult decision?

You live in Orgeon.
It rains a lot up there.
Rain in your boots sucks.

Keep the waterproof ones!

I'm clearly not indecisive. I have my choices of bikes I'd like to get in a year or so narrowed down to like 29. So, you know, I'm kinda not great at making up my mind.

Yeah, I guess it does rain a little bit in my neck of the woods. That's a good point. shaZam!, I'll probably end up keeping both. I'm rational like that.

Consider this: I live in TEXAS and have waterproof boots. I only have one pair, too.

Well then, that makes for an easier decision. Kinda. So what do you have? Do you always wear them, even with jeans, or just with leathers?

Sidi Strada Tepor Evos. I wear them most of the time, even with jeans, but sometimes I get lazy and just wear some sturdy sneakers.

All I know about Frank Thomas stuff is that it's sold at Cycle Gear pretty much exclusively, and it's cut for more "American" body types. And they are priced well (cheap). That's all I know, though.

I guess. It's not the trim "European" cut of stuff like Alpinestars. The FT stuff doesn't fit my skinny ass self very well at all.
