Recently I've been spending a lot of time (probably half or more) of my riding above 8,000 RPM. What kind of additional maintenance is necessary under these conditions? Is this really damaging to the bike?
I dont think it is harming it. I had the same mind set as you. I was so used to drivin a stick in a car that i know riding around on your car with high RPMs is bad for your clutch. But im pretty sure that i seen on here that the power band is around 6k to 9k. So i dont thinm you are hurting her. But if i am wrong i will be standing corrected in a few.
The more you ride around in the upper RPM range the more oil the GS burns. Check your oil more frequently and top it off regularly. If it isn't full the engine could overheat much easier and that is bad. Make sure you do your valve adjustments every 4000 miles, too.
Yes, definitely check your oil level frequently. I make about a 200 mile commute once a week and always check the oil level before and after I'm done. I usually have to put in a little bit of oil after I get back to keep the oil level at "FULL".
I've noticed it seems to burn oil to a certain oil level, then doesn't seem to burn much after that. But I refill it to full anyway.
And don't forget when you get back into your car that you're not riding the GS. I found out the other day that my truck has a rev limiter.

The first time I went from my bike then quickly to my truck I thought there was something wrong with it because it was revving so slow

Actually, I don't think riding around at high RPM itself is hard on your clutch, but obviously wearing more on your engine. However, shifting at higher RPM's is prolly what is harder on the clutch. When it is engaged and disengaged, it won't wear...but when it mates at high RPM's is when the more wear will occur. From what I've read. :dunno_white:
I recommend users who constantly ride at high revs to use the best quality motor oil they can. Preferably a synthetic.
